I Hope to see you all again soon at another get together! Can we just have a dessert party?

I'm in!

Just try for extortion, varmint! I've nothing to hide! But I do apologize that you could take no pie with you. If I arrange it, can you bake one or so for the pickin? I should ask first if you'd like to....

Rather than posting a ton of photos here, I'm going to send you to an Imagestation album -- as I did post nearly 60 photos! Only one person gave me express permission to post his or her image, so sorry about that. Plus, it's all about the food, right?

Here's the link: Your Imagestation Album

Anyhow, Mrs. Varmint and I had a splendid time in the Big City. We arrived at mid-day on Thursday and were escorted to Arthur Avenue, where we took in the sights, bought some salami, grappa, cannolis, big ass sammiches, cheese and other tasty treats. Later that day we headed to an inpronouncable Thai restaurant in Queens (Sripraphai), where we sampled a boatload of great dishes. Of course, being the tourists that we are, we headed over to Chikalicious for a dessert tasting. I passed out shortly thereafter.

We walked over 140 blocks on Friday. Oh, we ate a bit, too, including some good bread and coffee at Pain le Quotidien (??), a papaya drink and a couple of franks at Grays, gelato at Otto (I had banana, ricotta and olive oil; Mrs. V. had caramel, chocolate, and coffee). The gelato was excellent. We then had dinner with tommy and mrs. tommy at Babbo -- we did the traditional tasting with the riserva wines. The hilights were the two pasta dishes -- papparadelle with chanterelles, stuffed pasta with ricotta & duck gizzard, served with brown butter and sage. Oh, the wines didn't suck, of course. As happy as I was at that time, no one could convince me to have my picture taken with Mario, as he was hanging out on the street. We then headed back to Otto, where I took care of my grappa craving.

The next morning was a bit painful, but not too bad. We picked up an old high school friend of Mrs. Varmint's, visited the Union Square Greenmarket, and then headed to Chinatown. We joined the eGullet crew at Sweet n Tart and feasted on wonderful dishes, many of which I had never eaten before. We then walked over to Ground Zero and were amazed by the void. After exploring a number of kitchen design and houseware stores, we headed back to the hotel for a 30 minute break. The train took us back downtown to Blue Hill, where we joined Bux, Mrs, B., slkinsey and bergerka for a lovely dinner. The food was extremely good as were the wines. Plus, any time we're able to get a second plate of financiers, you can't go too wrong. After a visit in the kitchen with Chef Anthony, my lovely bride and I were struggling to stay awake. It was a long few days with way too much food. But it was great fun.

Now, where should I go eat when I return in June??????

what happened was this:

when i got there i went to bottom floor, second floor, third floor, in order.

after looking through most of the 3rd floor, i was about to check behind the wall when the waiters told me the people you're looking for probably aren't there, that's a private party.

i was like, hmm okay. now looks like it's 2 large round tables, indicating minimum of 18 people, too large for this thing i'm looking for.

i think the waiter thought i was looking for chinese people (i'm chinese).

now i suppose i should have at least checked to be sure, as that was a more likely scenario than you all finishing the meal after only 40 minutes or ditching Sweet and Tart and going somewhere else entirely.

i'm not really disappointed at missing the food. i've had tons of chinese food, and actually eaten at sweet and tart before. but woulda liked to see Varmint.

elyse, sadly I'm missing the pig pickn, so you won't get to send the pie.

Herb aka "herbacidal"

No Herb = No Pie??!!??

Whazzup with this equation? I missed it too, but hell, I'd certainly travel 400 miles for Elyse's pie!

Say it aint so - I want some of Elyse's pie even though Herbacidal won't be there...

Please tell me you're kidding.  You were actually there and didn't look behind the wall?  You're fucking with us, right?  This is the saddest story I've heard in a long while.

sadder than john ritter dying?

it's interesting that varmint thought the highlights of babbo were the pasta dishes. i always thought their pastas were outstanding as well, and generally remember them more than their meat or fish dishes. i thought i was alone!

Varmint, when in June? I'll be in the city for my college reunion 6/3 - 6/6 and would love to get together with folks. Maybe we can arrange a joint something.

Sounds like you made the most of your weekend!

Hey Varmint, glad you got back safe and hope you and Mrs V. had a great time to remember.

Tell Paige thanks for coming and we enjoyed having him.

Next time you're back, we'll have to do the dim sum /congee thing.

Were you there when we saw the name of the barbershop, MEI DICK? Else was amused by that.

Well there's a great little congee/roast meat place called BIG WONG. Mighty tasty stuff.

Now you can say you have had Peking duck. That was actually the best one I've had in a while. I get it at the Peking duck house in Closter in New Jersey and while it's good there, this one was a finer taste.

The beef was a pan fried steak in pepper sauce

I went to Big Wong once and it was such a pedestrian experience I can't remember what I ate.

Varmint, if you come back in June, maybe you'll be available some time when it isn't a major Jewish holiday.:raz:
