Scale deal at City Kitchens

Recommended Posts

Another City Kitchens bargain is at hand. I was in the other day (bought an Exoglass spoon, which is pretty cool, like a wooden spoon only blue) and they have a Salter electronic scale for $30. It's a really nice one, better than the Soehnle I have, which cost twice as much. It has the grams/oz button on the top, a fairly large platform, and good precision (1/8 oz or 1g, I believe). If you've been putting off getting an electronic scale, now's the time. I use my scale every day.

Thanks for pointing it out. I bought one. In fact, I bought several cool things at City Kitchens and I think spent only $58. That is such a great store, and they always have good sales. Last I saw Klink and Batgrrl, they were headed that way . . .

D'oh! We just missed it. Unfortunately they close at 6pm Monday through Saturday.

This just means that we're heading there in an hour or two, timed to be against Mariner traffic of course.

City Kitchens is absolutely going to bankrupt me. I went in for the scale but ended up walking out with a 10" chef's knife (house brand, 1/2 off, $34) and a 10" carving knife (again, only $35). Batgrrrl bought the rest of the stuff: martini mister, cocktail playing cards, two butter dishes, a salt dish and a cheese plane amongst others. It took all my strength to leave behind the gorgeous thai morter and pestle set for $40. I'll have to wait for next month.

that gorgeous thai morter and pestle set can be had at a thai grocery store too (if we're talking about the kind made of granite)...just so you know. Ours got lugged back from Singapore and is the second thing I'd grab if the house was burning down (after the cat). I adore it.

There's a Thai grocery store (Mekong) on Rainier, but it's kind of seedy. When I've seen the granite mortar and pestles at Asian stores, they haven't been any cheaper than at City Kitchens. They're cheaper in Thailand, if that helps.

The ones here in portland I've seen are around $25 - 30 for the 4 person size. I'm coveting a 6 or 8 person sized one, but haven't seen one. We don't really have a Thai grocery, so this is at the big Vietnamese grocery store (it's an IGA that's all SE Asian food). Are there none at the Vietnamese stores in the ID? I know the thai grocery store in Everett has them occasionally (and there very nice and not at all seedy) but I can't remember the name or address.

Today I checked out Hop Tanh and Viet Wah. Hop Tanh didn't have a set but Viet Wah did and for half the cost I've seen at City Kitchen and Sur La Table but it didn't come with the pestle and the morter looked awlful.

But enough of that because I've been giggling like a little school girl over my new 10" chef's knive. Right after I left City Kitchen on Sunday, I took my new roast carving knife and the chef's knife over to Seattle Cutlery for sharpening. For only $3 per knife, they made it **WICKED** sharp. I'm telling you, these knives are German made with German steel with full bolsters and when they're sharpened by a professional, they're really sexy! And only $34 for the 10" chef's knife!!! They're the house brand and called "Erste Klasse." Right now all open stock is half off. Get thee hence!

Go now!!!

Oh yeah, I command everyone to take their kitchen knives in for professional sharpening and you'll wonder what took you so long. Next chance I get I'm dropping off the rest of my knives so I can get that polished mirror edge on all of my knives.

DISCLAIMER: I have no idea how well the new chef's knife holds it's edge or how often it needs to be steeled (ie. steeling when you're not done prepping, I find that terribly annoying). I'll report back in a week or so on it's ability to hold it's edge.

edit: Seattle Cutlery is in the Pike Place Market, on the northern end by Bavarian Meats and the Taxi hot dog stand. Go now!

also, @*$^%!!! My new knife is sexy!
