I prefer to cook them, though, despite being a big sashimi fan.

While it is certainly possible to eat mussels raw, it is not advisable unless you are 100% sure where they came from. Even then, there is a moderately high chance of food poisoning.

 

Try a Google search for "Raw Mussels". There is plenty of information on line regarding food safety and raw seafood.
