I'm not normally a person who likes hyper-specialised kitchen equipment but I really, really want a one click butter cutter

Why - that looks like the largest piece of wasted $ for a kitchen that I can think of. Allright, there may be others, but seriously, a sharp paring knife does the same thing - and you wont be throwing it away and cursing after the gadget breaks.

Also, that thing can't possibly work right if the butter is anything but ice-cold. You let it sit on the counter for 5 minutes and it probably already starts to gum up.

I am one of the idiots who bought this thing. A couple of clicks later, and it broke. Absolutely useless.

I rest my case. And my paring knife.

This reminds me of a pepper grinder I obtained some place (I think it was a freebie). Wouldn't it make more sense to turn it around so you'd use four fingers instead of a thumb to cut the butter?? One thumb operation looks hard!

Huh. I never knew that the variation in butter quarters size and shape (stick vs. cube) was regional.

You people obviously don't use enough butter. Who could be happy with that measly little pat? I'd have to stand there clicking away like a Madame Dufarge on speed before I'd get enough to have happy little butter bump of love.

I love gadgety kitchen things too. When I saw one of the cooks on Top Chef use a little gadget called and Egg Topper, I was the first to tunou8t and by one. I don't use it much, but it is a unique tool for a unique task. It's a useful tool, since I can't cut an eggshell with a knife, and it works beautifully. But for cutting butter, like weinoo said, a knife works just fine.
