I have that book! I have a hectic day today, but will post a few pix from it when I get a chance.

I do realize that I'm old and as such, am perceived to not have buying power. It is quite clear that I am not the target market for these magazines. I'm not sure who is their target market, but I hope I never have to spend any time with them.

I'm so very sorry to hear this. Many condolences to all his family and friends. He will be very missed here at eGullet.

I'm loyal to Penzey's although they don't have everything I always want. I jump around for the rest.

I made that painful decision last year and as envious as I get when I see what I'm missing, I don't regret it. My pantry was overflowing.

I think I forgot to post about it a few weeks ago, but I got a loaf of the Organic Super Bread. It is full of nuts and seeds and also has grated dried apple, carrots and even a bit of banana. You don't really taste the fruit, but it gives it a slight sweetness. I was iffy when I got it then. Had a sandwich on it, which was a terrible idea. But toasted with butter, it is really nice. So nice, that I bought another loaf yesterday. 🙂 Organic Super Bread

I also got a couple of the St. Albans cheeses for $4.99 here in Kansas City. My only complaint is that they are so small. I easily could have eaten the entire thing, but stopped myself. I had it with the Rosemary Sfogliette. Delicious! I'd have gotten more because they did not have many, but the expire date was very soon. I hope it will be back. My store also had the figs that looked beautiful, but I knew I could not use them this week, so passed on them. I did pick up a new spice blend that I haven't seen before -- Ajika Georgian Seasoning. Ajika I have not tried it yet.

I did not buy them because I knew I would not use them before they went bad, but my Trader Joe's had fresh figs yesterday that were beautiful.

One of my favorite instant meals is a can of coconut milk and a can of pumpkin, spiced as you wish (any ethnicity will do) and heated for a delightful soup.

Those are beautiful!

That looks delicious! Thanks for posting this. -
Not to de-rail, but I started laughing when I saw this. Way back when after she graduated from college, my stepdaughter took a job teaching English in Japan as so many young people were doing then. She didn't speak a word of Japanese. Not long after she'd been there, she called. She related that grocery shopping was a challenge because she was never sure if she was buying something to cook and eat or something to put into the toilet for 1,000 blue flushes. That's all I could think of when I saw your post/photos! 🤣

Oooh! I can't wait to see if my TJ's has these. I'd planned to go today but we are still under excessive heat warning so am not making the trek. Next week, for sure!

I had to go check to see when I joined. In 2003! At the time, it seemed to be such a well-established board that had been around forever. I felt like such a newcomer. Time sure does fly!

I seldom see it on menus here in Kansas City and we are beef country. Go figure. -
Help Please! We need some quick ideas for ground beef!

We had this sometimes growing up. Mom called it hamburger gravy. Usually served over white bread or biscuits. I never thought about it, but probably something she made when money and time were tight. -
We had this at many big dinners at my Mom & Dad's, too. The best part for the kids were the olives--you could put them on your fingers!
-
I love that! How wonderful that she kept it.

A Year of Cooking, And I'm Using (blank) More Than Ever Before

Shortcuts. I'm so burned out on cooking that I take shortcuts that I never would have in the past. I use Penzey's spice blends a lot. I can sprinkle on whatever protein and or vegetables I am cooking. And cooking now usually means roasting because it is easier. -
I fell into the celebrity chef trap and bought a set of cookware by Wolfgang Puck that was on sale at Costco. It is horrible. Nothing is airtight. The lids are not airtight. Definitely was not worth the price, even though it was cheap. Never again.

Thank you for sharing that. I love the photos of your Mom!
