  1. There was a stand selling steamed brisket (I think I overheard the owner tell a customer it's Montreal style, though) for $15 a pound in the Granville Island Market today...I forget the name of the company, but it is located near the bakery that's near the Stock Market.
  2. The bacon wrapped shrimp looks delicious--I'm salivating over your description! And that bourbon pecan pie....
  3. ^that's hot.
  4. I will take abuse for gingerbread pudding and extra pumpkin ice-cream! I would like to be employed to eat all the "seconds" at Chocolate Arts. But seriously, I would love to learn how to make croissants and puff pastry by hand from Thomas Haas, and learn the secrets to decorating those beautiful little cakes!
  5. omigod Vancouver--I've mentioned looking for deep-dish pizza like that in a few threads. I would be very grateful if you actually found a spot that serves the glorious pie you posted!

    Dinner! 2005

I roasted my first pork loin today, following some of the suggestions in a recent Egullet thread. I roasted a 3 lb. piece of meat at a low temperature (300 degrees) for about an hour. Tented it with foil, and when sliced, it was a beautifully uniform pink (medium). Pork was rubbed with s&p, garlic, chopped shallots, curry powder, some olive oil and Maille mustard before going into the oven. It will be served with roasted sweet potatoes, Chinese "oil" rice (rice and schmaltz), and siu choy.
  7. ^Thanks for calling and asking, Sarah.
  8. appreciator's brunch included smoked salmon, so I don't think Aphrodite's is vegetarian.... *holds out hope for lard crusts* edit: can't spell today
  9. ^Yes, it's sometimes on the menu at Sakae. Unfortunately, they didn't have any in when I tried to order it, so I've never had it before.
  10. ^ Guess what I had for breakfast today. Another chocolate cake. This one came from Japan, and was filled with some sort of liquor (rum?) soaked raisins. Very dense, nice and bittersweet--however, not quite as dense as Deborah's flourless chocolate cake. Heavenly! Also, I had chocolate rugelaches and jam and walnut rugelaches. (What is the plural for rugelach? Rugelachs?)
  11. ^I never said it wasn't creative or a great effort. Of course it was creative--it's right up there with the "trout ice-cream" that, I believe, Sakai came up with. But do I think I would enjoy eating trout ice-cream or crab panna cotta? That's a little out of my comfort zone. Sure, I would taste it, but I'm quite sure I wouldn't enjoy it. I hope the judges on Iron Chef try to eliminate these preconceived biases towards odd pairings, though.
  12. I don't buy the food products from the dollar store, but I've bought: -dish towels for the kitchen -pastry brushes -sponges/scrubbing pads -kitchen magnets -waste baskets (this was actually 8 dollars, but dollar stores in Vancouver seem to sell items up to the 10 dollar range) I bought a set of measuring cups from the dollar store, but they were of such cheap quality that the couldn't even support the weight of flour when I used them (the handle would start bending). I threw those out right away and got a better set.
  13. ^I can attest that her creations are just as tasty as they look. (She also made a merlot/cassis/raspberry gelee for us, AND caramel-filled chocolates! )
  14. Do you know whether they use lard, butter, or shortening in their pastry?
  15. I had both the chocolate and the jam and walnut rugelach today. They are so addictive--only a few left in the box! I think I prefer the chocolate ones over the jam ones, just because the jam leaked out of the rugelaches a bit during the baking process, and dried out in the oven. Then again, even if the jam didn't dry out, I think I still would prefer the chocolate ones.
  16. ^I've only had the Terra brownies once, quite awhile ago, but I wasn't impressed at all. They were the cakey variety, very light on chocolate flavour--have they changed the recipe lately? From Terra, I love the pecan and fruit bread, the olive bread, and those foccacias! I prefer to buy my pastries elsewhere though....(I've had almost all of their sweet offerings, and I found them to be not as good as their breads.)
  17. I've never had a rugelach, a babka, or a knishes. Time to go to Solly's!
  18. Anything that I disliked, my mom would say, "Eat it; it'll make you beautiful!" So then I would eat it, of course. I was a vain girl. I guess the best example was: "Eat your snow peas--you'll be as beautiful as Snow White!" Others: -chips will give you a sore throat -milk will make your throat phlegmy -any acid and milk will "curdle" in your stomach, giving you a stomach ache (e.g. no eating oranges and drinking milk at the same time) -don't eat anything acidic in the morning without eating some sort of starch, or else you'll get a stomach ache -you should drink hot soup after a fattening meal (I don't know the reason for this, though)
  19. I had the privilege of eating the RLB cake yesterday night (and walked away with 3 leftover pieces!) because *Deborah* made it for our potluck dinner. It is insanely good! I only wish bakeries here would start making cakes of that quality so I could buy a slice whenever I had a hankering for something so rich and chocolate-y!
  20. ^It was the crab panna cotta with pineapple that someone said they didn't enjoy very much. Can't say it sounds too appetizing to me, either.
  21. Oooh, Hy's Caesar salad and cheese toast. Throw in some Cherries Jubilee while you're at it! ← I was going to chime in and suggest Hy's too! Add a nice, bloody slab of prime rib to go with my cheese toast and Caesar salad, please.
  22. Better than Marcello's? I haven't been to Marcello's in awhile, but I remember really enjoying their pizza--especially the slight char on the crust. (And I know that Adesso isn't a pizza place, but I'm nuts over their ultra-thin, crispy crust. )
  23. ^I remember the crunched up ramen noodles. It was the snack in grade 4! I haven't had any since then, though...and I can't say I miss 'em all that much.
  24. Totally agree with your comments. I highlighted your bit about the "wilderness and Mounties"--did anyone notice Kevin Brauch's comment that perhaps Morimoto's miso/crab cooked over an open flame on the wooden paddle is an "homage" to Canada? Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go hunt some caribou for my lunch.
