  1. My mom went out for lunch and brought home something really good--it's a fried pastry in the shape of a donut, but the pastry is extremely thin. It is stuffed with minced, seasoned beef. Nice and juicy.
  2. I think there are many Japanese restaurants in Vancouver like Gyoza King that serve good food for good value. Guu with Garlic also comes to mind.
  3. that's me..."trouble" is my middle name
  4. ^Yes, that's right--I've posted on this board that I live in the same building where Bis Moreno is located, and unfairly assumed that some of the people reading my review would remember that. I apologize if the owner thought it was unfair that I didn't mention that in my review. However, I did feel rushed during my dinner, and whether I live in the building or not does not change that. I estimate that we were in the restaurant for about 75 minutes, since I did stop at the corner store for some cream before I got back to my apartment. I dine out as frequently as I can, and I think I have a pretty good idea of what $35 (excluding wine, tips, etc.) can get me in Vancouver. I thought my review was an honest reflection of that $35 dollars spent; I did not expect that the same $35 would get me a $100 dollar dinner just because it was during DOV. I did appreciate having the opportunity to try the food at Bis Moreno for only $35.
  5. he's drinkign at section 3 right now. should i go or should i stay, hmmmm.... i will buy himn some ganache cake. even better than the tart.
  6. Trishca, I think "meat cookie" is "meen bang" in Cantonese--minced pork with various seasonings and add=-ins (e.g. my mom miches cuttlefish etc.) and steams it. Transleated word for word, meen bang is "meat cookie". And joie, I am eating the chocolate tart. You were right. edit: man, I must have been really drunk when I wrote that. "Meen bang" is actually a type of pancake/crepe thing. Yook bang is MEAT COOKIE!
  7. joie and ian walked me to the door, they said i owned them a pos.ti already spell checked. goodnight!
  8. heello this is onlhy my first or second drunke ponst on egullet so please forgieve me. tonight i was taken away from mny studies by tghe badasses of egullet, namely joie, arne, trischa, and ian and jeff and nicky omigod. todyy i ate at pane from heaven and let me say, everything that joie said about this place is true. that chocoalte ganache cake was heaven. it's my favourite desert right now(hence my new sig) i will have to eat this at leat once a week or i will die. and i had a mini choolate ganache tart and half a chocolate cupcale. both were good in their own right but since i had them after the chooclate ganache cake, they glory was somewhat diminished. an hour later we went to bacchus and i had 2 drinks and a galss of wine (cedar creek pinot noir, one of my favourites). they were a buttery caramel martini (i will odrer this again but i dont know what's in it. as joie said, iti's like werthers melted into a glass with alcohol. seriously god. and i had a red satin slip (or as joie would say, a red satin slut) and i shared an appetizer platter with her. the appetizer platter cam with samosas, a springroll, a sdalmon cake and a crab cake. there were two different sauces. then to yuk yuks i only had a cornona. then to relish and i had a mardinan martini or something. came with ice cream (melted). and cinnamon sugar? it wasn't nearly as good as the buttery carmael martini at bacchus.
  9. You know, I just re-read this post again and I was wondering whether I somehow got more meat (or maybe just better food in general) just because the owners recognized me and knew I ate there at least 4-5 times a week. I just can't believe we're talking about the same place, since our opinions are so different! Of course, we can agree on it being a very dirty place. I'm not repeating what I've seen though...but it hasn't deterred me (in the past) from eating there again!
  10. I'm not surprised your co-workers surprised you with that treat--you come across as such a sweet person! What is a "tempe fritter"? Slices of fried bananas are among my favourite sweets.
  11. Mooshmouse wasn't exaggerating when she raved about the Chocolate Ganache cake from "Pane from Heaven". I had my first taste of the cake this afternoon, and it is by far the most delicious thing that's passed my lips in the past week. The layer of ganache is smooth, bittersweet, and almost seamlessly melds with the moist cake on the bottom. (I also sampled a mini chocolate tart and a chocolate cupcake, and while they were good, they could not possibly compare to the Chocolate Ganache cake!)
  12. ^ I don't regret anything I've posted, and trust me, I wouldn't be spending any more money there even if I wasn't "banned".
  13. You can get mochi at T&T (in the cooler).
  14. "Leen goh" (Chinese New Year "cake" made with glutinous rice flour) sliced thinly, pan-fried in a good amount of oil...it's sweet, crispy on the outside, sticky, a bit greasy...absolutely delicious!
  15. I admit, the only reason I haven't had Indian food in the past few years is because I spent a night at the hospital after a particularly nasty food poisoning episode after eating at an Indian restaurant. I used to love Indian food, and I still eat samosas sometimes, but I haven't had butter chicken for years! Ohhh the memories.... Butter chicken is such a delicious dish though, and I think I should be ready to start afresh at some of the Indian restaurants in this thread.
  16. You're kidding, right Ling? There couldn't have been any leftover chocolate at your house. ← I bought two 100 gram bittersweet Lindt bars, and the recipe only calls for 170 grams.
  17. ^You know, I think I would actually enjoy that.
  18. Ah yes, this is one of my favourite Korean dishes too--but I never remember the name!
  19. Wow...foie gras...and it's fried. What a fantasy.
  20. I made the Simple Chocolate Mousse just now. This will replace my old fallback mousse recipe--Pierre's take on it is so incredibly easy, and so delicious! It will be a real struggle to not make this every night. (And six servings? Try two! ) edit: One thing I did was cut up some of my leftover chocolate and strew them evenly in the mousse. I loved the unexpected shards of chocolate mixed in with the creaminess!
  21. Thanks for all the suggestions! I will forward them to my friend. Hope you all enjoy the recipe too.

    V-Day

In the past, we've always had a fancy (and expensive) dinner out on V-Day, but we're staying in this year. I don't know what we're cooking yet, but I've decided that I'm making the Tarte Grenobloise. (Anyone want a slice? )
  23. I don't think older women should feel like they need to cover themselves too much. (Of course, there's a line between sexy and vulgar, but it exists for all age groups.) I wouldn't be bothered by seeing an older woman in a bikini. Halle Berry is 16 years older than me (she's 38) and I can only wish I look as good as she does in a bikini!
  24. I'm making Pierre Herme's chocolate mousse tonight, and I have high hopes.
  25. The rissotto balls and the vitello tonnato are calling me....
