Chickpeas and now lentils? I’m cancelling my visit.

@shain Thank you so much.

I am always happy to learn about something new such as the jachnun but I confess it is the broccoli that is calling out to me.

Looking at your baguette I was tempted to say that bacon was overrated but that would be a whopper. Still your meal does look good. I am very curious about the little fishes. Are they a pattern on a plate?

I almost had to buy the book but managed to squash my curiosity.

No food shortage. Just panicked shoppers.
-
Yes. It is right in Oakville. But I think it is more anxiety-causing than need be. What we are actually looking at is not a shortage of food but an expanse of empty shelving which will most certainly be refilled in fairly short order. Just like the general population, the stores were caught off guard by the announcement about the schools which seems to have woken everybody up to how serious the situation could become.
-
Our province yesterday announced that all schools would be closed for two weeks after March break. But from reports back from my daughter and a friend about the crowding and the lineups in the grocery stores you would think they had said they were closing all the supermarkets. The pasta aisle.
-
Most of the time I’m very sad that I can no longer do my own grocery shopping but I’m glad I do not have to be a part of this.

Chef Roux he died yesterday evening from a long-standing lung disease. He was 79.

One of my very favorite treats. I envy you your orange peel and chocolate but not your current situation! Stay safe and well.

I subscribe to @liuzhou’s philosophy that if it was good once there’s no reason not to do it again. Here. This time the scrambled eggs were accompanied by some toasted bread courtesy of @Kerry Beal If she gives up chocolate she can always bake bread for me 😂

I would love to brag to you that I am a mango connoisseur. It is completely untrue. I thought this was a fine mango. It did not reach the heights of some mangos that @Kerry Beal. found in of all places Costco in Sudberry! Still it seemed ripe and juicy.

Yesterday @Kerry Beal and I were joined by an honorary “lady” who is the inspiration behind the blimp campaign. He proved to be a delightful lunch companion. He wanted to return to Bangkok Spoon in Dundas. Cold sake for me. Ginger tea for Kerry and our guest. Then we shared appetizers and desserts. Calamari. Sticky rice with peanut dipping sauce. Deep fried hiDeep fried Thai Spring rolls. Beef skewers. honey bananas. Kerry and I each took a bite from one of these and then burst out laughing as we both realized that we did not like bananas! coconut rice with mango. This was the dish our guest was looking forward to most.

I have little doubt that my granddaughter will make good use of the failed brownies!
-
From the Hepburns to Nick Malgieri and his supernatural brownies. It seemed highly unlikely that the sales team would be enjoying treats from me this week. As usual I made them yesterday but as my daughter was here to drop off some stuff I suggested she take them home and cut them up and package them. This she did and reported back that anyone of them would work just fine to drive a nail into concrete. These are the photos she sent to me: MY granddaughter said they were tasty but SOLID, Nan, SOLID. DAMN. So I consulted with my favourite baking buddy who diagnosed over-baking but whose treatment seem to be a bit drastic: reduce the cooking time from 45 to 18 minutes. Seemed a bit drastic. So this morning I made a half recipe. I used an 8 x 8 pan versus a 13 x 9 pan. I reduced the oven temperature from 350°F to 325°F and reduced the cooking time to 35 minutes. Decidely better. I am getting too old for this.

In terms of food I think we have been indoctrinated into the idea that unless we have a balanced, nutritional diet every day of our lives we will come to harm. We don’t know how long this will last but I can be almost certain that few of us will succumb to starvation, scurvy, rickets or hyponatremia. Many of us are old enough to know what it’s like to live through food shortages that lasted longer that this is likely to. We may succumb to food boredom and/or withdrawal from food porn.

Of all the nasty things one might say about SPAM it is filled with UMAMI as well as salt. Even a little can punch up the flavour of most things.

Love my cast iron and even my carbon steel but you would have to wrestle my two sizes of this pan from my cold dead hands. Sometimes it just has to be non-stick. Click.

No worries. It can’t always be about me… can it? I am glad you enjoyed it and even though it is not something I would attempt to either make or eat it still looks attractive.
