  1. Yes I did look there. It’s also interesting how much is showing on Amazon.com but it all seems to be from third parties. There is no lack of UHT milk.
  2. Yes I really miss my supply of UHT milk. I don’t drink milk so only need it for cooking and I have one 8 ounce carton left and with the border closed I’m not sure when I might get a resupply. I can occasionally find 1 L cartons in the grocery stores here but the case of 12 - 8 ounces worked much better. Less waste.
  3. Ultra high temperature pasteurized to make it shelf stable. I know because when Kerry Beal used to go to Buffalo she would bring me a case.
  4. I have been longing for what I consider Chinese food for ages so when it was time to enjoy lunch with @Kerry Bealthis week I was lucky. Despite having ordered in Chinese for her own family very recently, Kerry was game to pick up Chinese again for her and I to share. This was the dinner for two from the Mandarin (M2Go) supplemented by some dumplings. This is when I discovered that what I think of as (Canadian );Chinese is not necessarily at one with the standard. Dinner for 2, 4, 6 or more differed mostly in the quantity not in the selection of dishes on this menu and I have to guess that it pleases most people most of the time. Eggrolls, sweet-and-sour chicken balls, chicken wings, chicken chow mein, chicken fried rice. Kerry‘s plate looked very similar only she had more balls!
  5. To my own astonishment, after I had read through your link, I realized that I have no association in my mind of chicken soup and comfort. I cast my mind back to my childhood and cannot recall a single bowl of chicken soup — ever. Consequently, I have no great desire to delve into it now. The included recipe looks as if it might produce a delicious soup. I just wouldn’t think of it in the way most people think of chicken soup — for the soul. I just think it would be good soup for the taste buds. 😂
  6. I despise eggplant so was shocked to learn that Oliver Sacks (The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat) after eating it day after day in a kibbutz, had thought it was chicken liver. I love chicken liver. Edited to say: I realize now this is an old post! Oops.
  7. I have to be honest and say that I hope there are not too many more Crusty items in my freezer. I think I have reached my limit. This was the butter chicken pie from the Hamilton pie Company. I do not know what made it butter chicken because it was not particularly flavourful and certainly did not remind me of any butter chicken dish that I have had before. In addition it was somewhat dry and just rather boring.
  8. Here. after winning $1 million in the game show Who Wants to be a Millionaire, David Chang donates his winnings to help restaurant workers.
  9. How can anyone not want to read a book by Thomas Keller that begins this way: “YOU COULD SAY A TUILE RECIPE from Gourmet magazine in the late 1980s launched The French Laundry.”
  10. I can certainly see why you are tempted. These days I no longer hold myself to any ideas of cooking from a book but have found that I can thoroughly enjoy certain cook books without even a hint of a guilty conscience. It is $20 or so for the Kindle edition in Canada. Will I or won’t I? A couple of other books are calling to me so we shall see.

    Dates

I find scissors work the best and I usually coat blades with A drop or two of olive or other oil.

    Dinner 2020

I was just teasing you. And I thought you knew that. I admire your willingness to attempt these complex recipes especially in the wee hours of the morning.

    Dinner 2020

It’s just not the same without the cubeb.
  14. I don’t know why but this triggered such a memory! Dates were a Christmas treat when I was growing up in the 50s. I had an uncle and aunt who always had a box of dates on the table at Christmas time. While we kids loved the dates, we were limited to one each, it was what became of the date box that mattered. it was shaped like this but made of a soft wood, balsa I suspect. After it was emptied of its dates my uncle would create the most amazing doll crib. I do not recall all the details but I know that he cut the lid of the box such that it made a hood as it were for the crib. Then his wife, my aunt, would sew and crochet the necessary bedding. Lease would be glued around the hood and the base. Dates and Jaffa oranges! It was a magical time.
  15. Click Scroll down to the end. He considered himself a cook despite his many positions which one might think would qualify him for the “chef” title. Gotta love his humility.
  16. Had to look that one up but it sure does sound tasty.
  17. None of the women you mention never held a position as a chef except on television.

    Lunch 2020

Only place that barley belongs in my mind!
  19. Maybe we are beginning to learn the real meaning of our celebrations and beating yourself up in the kitchen doesn’t have to be part of them. As we find ourselves unable to gather with those we love, the real meaning pushes through. A loaf of bread, a jug of wine and thou, perhaps many “thous”.
