  1. Dinner at a fancy restaurant recommended at hotel. It happened to be Georgian but we went anyway even though we had Georgian food on Saturday as well. I love their cuisine. we had a few appetizers. Satsivi, chicken in walnut sauce. Pickled veggies Lobio, bean dish with various spices Hachapuri, cheese pie Marrow bones. Perfectly cooked with nice and fatty chunks of melt in your mouth marrow.
  2. Meat centric dishes is what is usually eaten when you eat out. More vegetables are consumed at home. People in Miscow grow stuff if they have dacha (summer house). I do miss salads that we normally eat every day.
  3. @BonVivant Your gravlax looks spectacular. Does it include beets? Can you please share the recipe.
  4. Quick mid day snack at another Russian chain Teremok. My Dad, my son and I all chose pelmeni (meat dumplings) with sour cream and Russian beer Baltika#7. Young man had double portion of pelmeni and most of grandpa's beer. For a grand total of about 15 dollars. And we were walking down Arbat street which is as touristy as it gets. choice of soft drinks including birch water this is is how birch water is made, it is actually sap of birch tree menu board. You can get rather filling dinner for 169 rubles, under 3 dollars
  5. @rotuts. Great advice! Will. Get. More. It is very nice that my son is traveling with me since I can taste everything and he will eat the rest. It is very fortunate to be a young tall man when it comes to eating.
  6. 250 grams (a bit over 1/2 pound) of the best roe is 800 rubles, may be 12 dollars. Black caviar is very expensive, have not decided yet if it is worth a splurge. Will keep y'all posted so to speak.
  7. And now I can not sleep. It is 12:40 am. Hearing Chris De Burgh song in my head Moonlight and vodka, takes me away,Midnight in Moscow is lunchtime in L.A.
  8. Dinner at friends' house. Fat hod dogs called sardelki, half sour pickles, salted herring, pickled mushrooms Home brewed beer produced in the city apartment. Vodka and black bread, naturally.
  9. @ProfessionalHobbit I am another huge fan of your previous posts. Looking forward to your omnivore stage in life. I will think of you as a food artist formerly known as Soba
  10. "Dinner ended when the hollandaise ran out." hate when it happens! Hollandaise or bernaise ALWAYS runs out before I am ready to part our ways.
  11. Salmon roe open face sandwiches for breakfast.
  12. Dinner at a Georgian restaurant called Chachapuri. About 30 dollars for two including one beer. writing on the black board says treasure your appetite as your first love. Georgian dumplings khinkali, we ordered a lamb version. Shashlik, grilled pork kebabs. Lulya, kebab made with ground lamb kinda like kofta. Chachapuri, dough stuffed usually with cheese but we opted for a meat version.
  13. @JoNorvelleWalker you are right. Over cooked steak at least smells good. In general, there are many places where one should not order fish
  14. Snacking at Sheremetevo airport while waiting for my son to arrive. This is the first time both of are together at this airport after leaving USSR 22 years ago! Siberian crown beer and couple pieces of toast were about 4 dollars. The place is called little potato and is a Russian chain.
  15. An interesting announcement right after we took off: you can only consume alcoholic beverages served on board. Hmm, I guess that bottle from duty free should stay unopened.
  16. Food on the plane. It all tasted great except for terminally overlooked steak. I briefly regretted not ordering fish but the passenger next to me ordered it and it did not smell good if you know what I mean. Everything else was delightful.
  17. I am back in Moscow for a few days. This time with my son. I flew Aeroflot from Washington DC. It is my first time on Aeroflot in a very very long time but non stop flight won over my allegiance to United. It also did not hurt that I was able to buy business class ticket for only a little more than the price of a coach ticket on US airlines. Menu
  18. @gfron1 How did you get reservations at n/naka?
  19. Soda stream for 9 dollars, cartridge included. Looks brand new.
  20. Half white and half whole wheat bread following King Arthur no knead crusty white bread recipe. Made a few yummy sandwiches with it.
  21. Cook's treat. Roasted chicken last night left me with giblets. Thinly sliced liver, heart, and gizzard flash seared and served over steamed rice (not pictured).
  22. Steam baked zucchini at 450 degrees steam bake. Just enough time to toss and eat green salad and to pan sear halibut.
  23. Very delicate white tea that we brought back from China. Tin got damaged in transit but that's OK.
  24. May be this will give you some ideas. http://www.bonappetit.com/city-guides/package/los-angeles
  25. @rotuts It is the same oven, first picture with door open showing full size roasting pan inside (may be bragging a little since it is Mauviel). My second oven is Cuisinart steam boy. @AlaMoi You are correct about the oven but I am a girl (OK, middle age woman)
