  1. Scallops with mushroom risotto. Scallops were nice and dry, almost sweet tasting.
  2. Try JM Stock butcher shop on Main St. They also have location in Richmond so may by you already know about them. They have one breakfast and one lunch sandwich offering during the day and I had the most delicious country ham on biscuit there. They also have nice bread and of course lots of different meat cuts and sausages.
  3. I liked it very much. Any chance you can post the list of ingredients please, it only shows on screen for a brief period of time.
  4. I generally find inexpensive (OK, cheap) white wines to be more palatable than reds. Chilling white wine well also helps. And of course there is MR if you like bubbles. Also TJ Lambrusco is nice. .
  5. Do you have Trader Joe's neaby? They have a lot of wines that cost around 5 dollars. My favorite is Gruner Veltliner from Hungary for 5.99 (OK it is a little over 5 dollars). World Market often has sale on purchases of four bottles or more, like extra 25% off, and I found a lot of drinkable cheap wines there. Discount applies even to their clearance wines.
  6. Can you share how to make Boursin cheese? That sounds like a fun project.
  7. I have a few 2.5 mm Mauviel pots and pans that are steel lined. Bought them at a huge discount while Sur La Table was switching to 1.5 mm line. They cook very well but I almost invarialy reach for high carbon steel or cast iron pans. And for Le Creuset pots. Now I am trying to think why and can not honestly answer that question. But this is what on my stove top all the time: And copper pot is also out but hosting a plant . I did not even think about it until I started to type response to this thread. <feeling ashamed>
  8. Posole (Rancho Gordo) soup, perfect winter food.
  9. Cream cheese and blue cheese (2:1 ratio) stuffed jalapenos 12 min at Steam Bake 350 degrees. Next time will try to broil to give it more color.
  10. Just came back from a walk. It is absolutely gorgeous outside but I do NOT want to throw myself into that snow. Joining Deryn in sending snow to Shelby accompanied by a bottle of MR. Grocery store is mostly restocked. And Popeys is open at Pentagon mall. The force is strong with chicken supply chain.
  11. And just like that. The storm is over. Frittata for breakfast with potatoes, onions, and the last bit of bacon in the house. Fear not, I can walk to Harris Teeter any time now. And Sur La Table has extra 20% off clearance, that is an extra incentive to walk to our shopping plaza.
  12. I woke up and immediately ran to the window. Snow has stopped! We have power! Now I can sleep a little more and wake up to more cooking. And grocery stores will be open.
  13. My Stormy Jonas old fashioned made with Benton's bacon infused bourbon, agave, mandarin peel, Peychaud bitters. Note to self: need to update my bitters collection.
  14. Snow picked up this afternoon. Our building countered with BYOB party that started at 3 PM. People also brought a few food items.
  15. Storm(y) Jonas sounds like a good name for a cocktail.
  16. I too like tasting menus. It allows me to try what chef thinks is their best morsels of food. As for wine pairing, it is almost always too expensive and too much alcohol for me. I can order a cocktail and a glass of wine during dinner and that works fine for me.
  17. Totally inauthentic ramen for lunch. Sous vide egg 145 degrees for about 45 minutes. Left over pork roast seared in Benton's bacon drippings, more drippings went into soup for the fatty mouth feel. I do not like large piece of pork in my ramen since it is difficult to eat so I cut it into bite size pieces. Home made chicken/pork stock. Brand of instant ramen noodles approved by my DIL from China. As a side note, I have tons of flavor packets from noodle soup. Any ideas on how to use those?
  18. LindaK, Yep, DC can be incapacitated by very little snow. Last Wednesday all freeways were literally stopped after 1 inch on the ground (there was apparently no pretreatment). I also never cooked capon before. It tasted like very flavorful chicken. Surprisingly there was very little fat, about 1/2 cup from 7 pound bird. But the meat was very juicy and tender. Will see how it reheats later today or tomorrow. Will probably make capers and herbs sauce to go with it.
  19. Arey, you are so funny. Things I wish I bought: Fresh herbs, flour (only a little left after two bread loafs), more eggs, beef (beef stew would be lovely). I am so used to going to grocery store(s) almost daily that it is difficult to plan ahead. I also tend to eat more while stuck at home. Spent entire morning planning meals for the rest of the weekend. Now roasting potatoes (side dish for dinner and also for tomorrow's frittata), soaking Rancho Gordo posole (for soup tomorrow), poaching left over tuna (for tuna salad), sous viding eggs (ramen soup for today's lunch). Snow storm can be really fattening.
  20. About an ounce of warm bacon fat per 750 ml of bourbon. Sit at room temperature for a few hours (or overnight) and put in the freezer for easy removal of bacon fat. And of course I have SV and MR!
  21. Breakfast did not go as planned. Left over mushroom risotto cakes started to fall apart the minute they hit the pan. So I let them fall apart completely, pressed into a pan to create some crisp bits. Fortunately, freshly grated Parmesan (lots of Parmesan) can cover multitude of cooking sins. It was delicious but the picture definitely belongs on the regrettable food thread. And much more photogenic Mandarin and Pineapple juice
  22. Started to snow harder. Our balcony definitely got couple feet of snow but that is probably due to wind.
  23. Thank you for liking my bread. I cook a lot but bake only infrequently. Measuring ingredients is not something that I like to do and inability to taste food as it is cooking is also difficult for me. I think one snow cone will not kill anybody but it is just as easy to crush ice (from you freezer) in Vitamix and make snow cone that way. If all fails, just pour your liquor of choice in a glass and enjoy
  24. Double espresso with cream and unread issue of F&W. Espresso keeps me from being hungry for a while. Enough time to contemplate breakfast.
  25. This morning: Water: running. Electricity: we have it. Snow looks so pretty from the window.. Wind is now starting to be loud.
