  1. Do bagels count? If so I'd be interested.
  2. Does anyone have any info about this wine bar and shop, it's next to Market Basket. I checked out its website but its kind of vague. Also does anyone have recommendations for wine shops with a large selection of champagne and other sparkling wines. Btw I would prefer Bergen or Passiac Cos. Thanks in advance. ST
  3. All this is true about the Patterson Farmers Mkt., but I think it is much better to go during June thru Oct. Right now its like a supermarket with great low prices. One attraction of the market is the two butchers on Railroad Ave. (one Hallal), the fish store on Buffalo Ave (they will scale and clean but not filet) and the butcher (also on Buffalo). Also in the area on Main Ave. are many Arabic stores. My two favorites are Fattels Bakery and Nori Food Store. They both have a wide assortment of olives, pickles, pitas (baked right on the premisses), Arabic products,cheeses, bulk nuts and seeds, and desserts. Nori has eggplant stuffed with walnuts . Fattals makes pies (like a pzza) in a brick oven. The toppings include cheese, beef and Za'tar They also make falafel and scharma. and have a halal butcher that makes spicy lamb sausages. One the block there is probably a dozen Arabic eateries to stop for a snack. Also in the area (Main Ave in Clifton) is Carrados. Inexpensive produce, decent meats, good selection of bread in many styles, food products from around the world (items that you will see in gourmet shops for much more money,cheap fresh fish and deli,many cheeses and olives. This place is worth a trip by itself. Be carefull on the weekend it gets packed, but is open from 5am till 11pm, 7 days a week.
  4. Right Down the biock is Jerrys. They have a nice selection of cheese, cold cuts, wine, Italian products and other food items that you don't see everywhere else.

I'm on my third brand of knives in the last 20 yrs, Dick in cooking school (I love, but the handles are starting to wear out ), Henkels as a gift ( they're hard to keep sharp (S.S)), and recently (2yrs ago) Global. I got a vegetable knife (5-6 in) and wouldn't trade it for any other knife I've tried. I liked it so much that I bought the same style in a 8 in. length.

    Olives

    No they don't. Two thing you can do to make them last longer is to keep them covered with olive oil. I have one of those nifty olive crockpots from Restoration Hardware. The other important thing to remember is to use a clean utesil to pluck them out of the container (prevents nastiness from growing on the olives). Depending on what kind you've purchased I wouldn't refrigerated them (unless its the bottled ones from the supermarket).
  8. THe first thing I would say is to go early. It gives me a reason to get up on Sat. I don't think that you need recommendations, I may be wrong, you probably know every place south of 14th st. Go early!
  9. In that same shopping center is a "Chinese" restaurant that has homemade noodles with a variety of sauces. I don't rember the name (before Eg) and I only had one dish (lunch). From that one dish I would say it's worth a try.
  10. I went on Sat. with Mrs 00 and two other couples. We ordered a tasting menu (7 courses, $95). We sat in the bar (front) room. Thankfully the restaurant is completely smoke free. There was some grumbling by the women because we were near the door, but that turned out ok because the restaurant was quite warm. The food was good plus (thank you Cabralas). We started with a bottle of Gruet sparkling wine with a plate of three fish preparations, salmon tartare with quail egg, a spoon of black carviar, and a raw yellowtail preparation. Next we had green and white asparagus with a truffled vinagarette and a bottle of Villadon Saugnon Blanc,nice dish and wine. The highlite for me was the next course, a slow roasted cod with truffled potatoes that half the table received. The other half got sea bass with fava beans, I thought the beans could have been cooked longer. After that we got abalone on toast with sauted onions, my least favorite dish. Next was a lobster with porcini in a herbed buere blanc also a very nice dish. The 6th course was a risotto with truffles, a little to rich with butter. We drank a Macon Fuisse with that dish. We then a had a meat course that was a veal roast with cranberry beans in a veal reduction. My only problem with this was that it was room temperture. We drank a '89 Pichon La lande that we brought with us ($30 corkage). The cheese course was a poached pear (quite soft) with goat cheese and truffle oil, also very good. Then came the desserts. They gave us seven different dishes of which my 2 favorites were warm flourless chocolate cake and pineapple parfait, They comped us a glass of docetta. The room was very nice, but the veiw out the window was of a blamk wall across the street. The service was excellent except when we wanted to pay, that took about 20 minutes. The plates were too big for the size of the of the table, always a issue for me. The cost was $310 per couple. I don't know if I would go back because the food was little too rich and the prices on the wine list were rediculously high.

  20. Fink your right, but most nonproffesionals would like CC better than food equipment stores especially if they don't know what they want.
  21. Kinderkamack across from Finks, not great but does the job. Washington Ave in Bergenfeild. As far as Han Au Rheum goes there's not many that have the size and coverage that they have. Nick handled just a "few" of the others. BTW I thought we were talking about Chef Central. I just came home from work and went past 17 on the Pkwy, I hope Swissmiss didn't go.
  22. is that the place whose sign you can see from route 80? i've always been curious. what kind of stuff do they have? as far as that "international food warehouse," i think it's completely lame. the produce is not notable, if it exists at all, there is an embarrassing lack of asain foods, and it's not all that big unless you want to buy cheap t-shirts and junk like that. and it's ugly. it's a non-entity when compared to the place in jersey city. Tommy, you're probably right about IFW, but why the f would you go to JC for produce or asian supplies when you have more stores per mile` in Bergen then anyplace except the three Chinatowns in NYC. Btw have you been to JC lately, its gone way downhill like IFW.
  23. Besides having Chef Central, Paramus is strip mall and mall central. Every store known to man is on that strip of rt 17. If you're coming north on 17 you might want to check out International Food Warehouse (get off at essex st go towards hackensack, its right there on the rtght). Its anoughter foodie mecca.
