  1. This isn't a srate by state issue, in many areas its even more local than that. Town ordinances rule on liquor issues.
  2. If he's into middle eastern food, Main St between Crooks ave and St Joes hospital has many restaurants. If he wants a quick bite (of middle eastern food) tell him Fattals Bakery on Main St has great falafels and schwarma at cheap prices. The other choices in the area are mostly fast food and delis.

    lobels/wagyu...help

I've tried two things. Place some alum foil on the grates when heating the grill, shiney side down and remove it before grilling. It seems to get the grates much hotter. Mix a little sugar in your salt and pepper seasoning and rub it on the steaks about 15 mins. before grilling. The sugar doesn't add any sweetness it just seems to help with the carmelization.
  4. Who would dp that? A little brown for textural contrast. Only fresh picked, eaten raw is better than lightly grilled corn.
  5. Try the Patterson farmers Mkt on Sat. and Sun. Its on Railroad Ave in Patterson. The " farmers" bring produce and there's a good selection of Jersey Fresh. Come early because the best goes fast. Right across the street is a Oriental fish and package good store. In Little Ferry and Ridgefeild is Han AH Rhuem which is a Oreintal mega supermarket that covers all bases from produce, fish and meats to all types package gooods, sushi and kimchee. There's threads on all these places, search it out and you'll find that this part of Passaic and Bergen counties is well covered. Btw: Welecome to the wonderful world of Egullet
  6. Clifton, Passiac and Patterson are loaded with great ethnic markets. Carrados on Main St has a great selection of Vegetables, pasta, and gourmet package goods. In Patterso there is Nouri and Fattals (also on Main St) for all your Middle Eastern needs. In Passaic there is Monroe St with 3 good Mexican supermarkets. The Shoprite in Totowa is good with a better than average fish department. In Garfeild ( on River road) is 2 good Polish pork stores. There's also one in Botany Village (Stefan and sons) that smoles their own Keilbasy. This area is very diverse and is not dominated by the big chain stores. If you look around a little there are plenty of mom and pop stores making and selling great food products.
  7. A larger selection of oils and vinegars. Some grains and nuts, more hot sauce and other things I can't remember. Everything they have there can be had at other places (see my previous post) cheaper and with a much larger selection.
  8. I can do the collards and maybe a tray of mac & cheese.
  9. Chef Central has never been about foodstuffs. Even when they 1st openned, with a much better selection than they have now. Its always been about hardware. If you want food go to Jerry's, Han ah Rhum, Fairway, Carrados, Zabars or Citarella. They're all in easy striking distance of No. NJ. If you want a good selection of kitchen "stuff" this a good choice. I think the only other place that comes close is Fortunoff in Wayne (I'm stickly talking about No. NJ).
  10. When I was growing up in Long Island (NY) in the late 50's and early 60's we use to get soda delivered in heavy glass bottles in wooden crates. The flavor that always went first was the wishnik. We all loved that stuff. I think they had other fruit flavors, orange and pinapple come to mind. Soda just doesn't taste like that anymore. I'd could go for one right now. I think the brand name was Hoffman. I wonder if there was any relationship.

    Tomato Sandwiches

Never had Duke's, eh? I have, its good but not Hellmans Them are fightin' words here in the South. Oh, by the way, have you never heard of homemade mayo? That is what makes a blissful 'mater sammich become heavenly. I make homemade mayo on occasion, but my mother didn't. Tomato sandwiches are about childhood food memories (besides great flavors and textures) for me. Thats why simplicity works, Wonder bread, great tomatoes, Hellmans, salt and pepper. Thats it. I've had them other ways, and they're good, but not the same .

    Tomato Sandwiches

Miracle Whip? I don't know if I should start this but, Miracle Whip? There is only one commercial mayo and that would be Hellmans. Everything else is simply lubrication. As far as I'm concerned Hellmans is the only way to go on a tamater sandwich.
  14. Now I have to have (make) them. A google search turned up nothing relevent. How about a few ingrediants or a link so I can try them.
  15. Can you share the recipe? Or just the ingrediants. I'm pretty good at doping out where to buy most any food product.
  16. Two possibilities: La Riviera Trattoria 421 Piaget Ave (RT 46e) Clifton NJ Very good northrn Italian at reasonable prices. Harolds New York Deli 10 Polito Dr. Lynhurst NJ Great pastrami and corn beef, huge sandwichs, "worlds largest pickle bar"
  17. Will a Cuban sandwich do? If so, try Sabor Latino on Monroe St in Passaic.
  18. I doubt the state will lose much tax revenue (they always find a way to collect ). This is about distributers having a stanglehold on which wines and how much they cost. I've bought wines directly from wineries, through auction and on the internet. For me its about getting wines that are not available locally. When you add in the shipping its rarely cheaper to buy out of state.
  19. If you're likw me, and I expect you are, you'll return a few times and then the waiting, seating, and crowding will get to you. The wine list is the best, but because of its lenght it almost makes it impossible to make a selection. The food is well prepared and the portions are huge (the rice) at a very reasonable prices, but every time I think about going there I remember the 45 min waits I've endured. I know you can call and they'll tell you when to come, but that doesn't always work. I wish you could make a reservation. Its been a while since I've been there and hadn't thought of it, so maybe its time to return .Btw the crabs are great because of the butter (large amounts) in the sauce
  20. They have a great selection of olive oil. A great choice is Antixhe Bonta at $10 for 2 liters a real bargain. Anouther great item is white anchovies, very hard to find and not like canned of salted, they're much sweeter. They also haxe a dexent selection of Italian wine. Balthazar bakery is right down the block.
  21. john has never been to Johnnie and Hanges. he's also never been to Clixes and that other place in Ridgewood/Glen Rock/Hawthorne (not sure of the town). he's expressed interest in trying them, however. perhaps i'll get him out one day for the trifecta. Goffle Grill, right down thw block from Clixes.
