  1. This sounds the same as Lucy's Gourmet Fish Mkt in Wayne. They have a real good fish store with a small restaurant attached to the the store. I've been a few times for lunch and always found the fish fresh and well prepared. I've never had takeout. Its right next to the Mountainveiw train station in Wayne.
  2. There are at least 10 towns within 10 minutes of Paramus by car (unless you don't have access to one and have to walk). Try the search function, I'm sure something will pop up.
  3. I've been there many times when the rice cake machine has been on (behind where they make sushi). The store in Little Ferry is actually two stores, Valley Fair(which is actually many little stores) and Han Ah Rhum. They've completely renovated Han Ah Rhum in the last couple of months. They added a butcher and expanded the Kim Chi section and rearranged the packaged and frozen food section. It doesn't matter which one is better, its just nice that I have TWO great Oriental mkts so close. I'm suprised that no one from Middlesex Co has chimed in about the great mkts in Woodbridge and Edison.
  4. Have you been recently? They've completely rennovated the store. There is a rice cake machine (always been there) and they give samples of dumplings and other goodies. The restaurants in the Ridgefeild store are closed right now. I also like the selection of Kim Chi (prepack and loose) better in Little Ferry. Btw there is a store on 32nd st in NYC (not at all like NJ, but a good selection of take away items) between 5th and 6th on the north side of the block.

  6. I love this store! There is anouther branch nearby (on River ST in Little Ferry) that has been recently renovated that I like better than the the one in Ridgefeild. The selection of Kim Che is amazing. All types ranging from simple cabbage in salted water to tiny crabs in spicy sauce. There must be over 100 in their display. One of the other things I like is the frozen food isle. So many dumplings and buns to choose from (at great prices). If you're into Oriental food products these stores are a destination worth traveling to. China 46 is nearby.
  7. A few more details please? Maybe an address?
  8. I had the two Chassagne Montrachet on Fri a t a 50th bparty along with 2 bottlesof1983 Dunn Howell Mountain , a 1990 Simi Reserve Cab. and a Kacher 1998 Tba that was the bottle of the night. We also drank a Calif Pinot that I'm not familar with. I liked the Ramonet slightly better than the Deleger. The Romonet seemed to have a little bit better developed fruit and a trace of oak the rounded the bottle out nicely. I'm going back to buy both of these bottles (if there's any left).
  9. Went to thai restaurant on tues with the family. Its in the black hole on the north side of Kinderkermack next to Westwood Lincln Mercury. This location has eaten at least 5 restaurants in the 7 years I've lived in Bergen Co. I hope the new owners have better luck. We started with a chicken satay, papaya salad, and a spicy beef salad. All good specimens, but the heat vlevel could have been brought up for my tastes. Next up was tom yum goong soup, good sourness but could have been hotter (spicier) We followed with spicy fried rice and drunken noodles (spicy) chow fun noodles with basil, veg, pork and hot pepper. Both good but a little greasy. We finished with Pimaan chicken, fried 1/2 chichen with garlic pepper sauce. This wasn't spicy and I liked it quite a bit. BTW they have frogs legs preperations which I'm going to try next time. Its BYO and the check was $65 with tax and tip. Sorry I can't give you the address but the phone is 201 967 0440. Overall I'd give it 7/10 with potential. I' ll return its a nice addition to the area.
  10. I was at Patterson Super savers (Patterson, NJ) last week and purcased the following: Il Poggiolo Sassello Brunnello Di Montalcino 5 star 1995 This wine was a bit of a brute, the first taste was very closed and tannic, after 30 minutes in the bottle it still hadn't opened much. I probably should have decanted it and let it sit for a hour before retasting. BTW the storage wasn't perfect because the cork was stained half way up. $24.99 IL Sodaccio DI Montevertine 1997 One of my favorite producers in the mid 1980's, then the prices got out of hand. This wine was a bit on the light side (compared to other Montevertines), but nice fruit and ready to drink right now. Again not great storage for the same reason. $11.99 a real steal. Both these bottles were drank at home at dinner consisting of green salad with roquefort dressing, mussels topped with tomato concasse and pepper crusted NY strip steaks. I also purchased Domaine Ramonet Chassagne-Montrachet 1999 ($19.99) and Michel Colin-Deleger Chassagne-Montrachet 1 Cru Les Chevnevottes 1998 ($14.99). I'll be drinkiing these two on Fri at a Bday party and will let you know.
  11. I would be on the lookout for Italian Brunellos and some Barolos from the 1997 vintage along with white burgandys from the 97, 98, and 99 vintages at "closeout" (read dump) prices. According to my local wine salesman there has been a grat deal of consolidatoin in the NY, NJ area and the new larger companies have alot of inventory to dump. I purchased a number of items and will post some prices and my impressions of the wines tomorrow.

I've been trying to go to Hunan Cottage for years. I'm in Fairfeild all the time for work, but can never get anyone who's adventurous enough to go (going by yourself is a waste). Work associates are more of the one from column A, one from column B types. The Loin's Head were sort of like extra light matzo balls (in consistancy, not flavor). I wish my meatballs were that light.

Took the family to dinner here last night (Sun) for a great meal. We started with soup dumplings, scallion pancake and taro buns. All three were hits. We wanted to try a fresh bamboo shoot preperation, but the owner told us that the season is almost over and they were out . The nexct item we tried to order was roast chicken northrn China style, also out , so we headed for the regular menu and ordered the beef with smoked chile pepper. It was very hot , my daughter loved it and I gave it a 7.5. Next up was steamed shrimp in a clear (almost buttery) garlic sauce. This was the table favorite, we ordered extra rice to get every drop of the wonderful garlic sauce. Last came the Loin's Head with baby bok choy. Four large meatballs in a brown sauce, just perfect.I don't get to go as often as I like to because its a bit of a schlep. In my mind this is the best Chinese restaurant in No. NJ and maybe in the state. The last few times I was there it wasn't very crowded, that's a shame
  14. Agreed, but when you want serious wine, you want serious wine.
  15. I went to Tapas De Espana on Sat (great meal). We called before we went and asked if they have a corkage (Three serious wine drinkers who wanted to show off and drink some great wine). No we were told they have a wine list. When we get to the restaurant and check out the list we see that there is seven reds with no vintage dates (always a bad sign). The morale of the story is that when I want to have great Spanish food and great wine I'll have to pass on Tapas De Espana, its a shame .
  16. Lately i've started to bring my own glasses more and more. Most places offer to rinse my glasses. I recently purchased a plastic 6 compartment carrier that holds bottles and glasses. Its made by Rubbermaid and looks like the carriers the milkman used to use when they delivered. BTW its $4.99 at Carrados Wine and Beer making store in Clifton.
  17. Soba, If you like plain yougart, you might want to check out a product called kefir or kefir cheese (skip the flavored bottled ones you might see in the supermarket or the health food store) . Its available in most Arabic stores and blows away any supermarket or natural food brand yougart. Its very rich and creamy and has a nice tartness. It also makes a killer blue cheese salad dressing.
  18. Bunny , tell us where you are.
  19. So is matzo. Its not about wheat flour, its about how its handled and the amount of time in the oven. Thats why its better to stay away from it.
  20. Holly, Nathan's is a sad state of affairs, especially when the weather is nasthy like its suppose to be this weekend. Go the 10 blocks east on Brighton Beach Ave (between Coney Island Ave and Ocean AVE under the EL). There is a amazing amount of eastern european food stores selling all types of smoked fish, cheese and cured meats (take a cooler). There's also Mrs Stahls Knishs ( take it home and heat it up they nuke it now). There's plenty to eat in the food markets, I can't remember names of rest. that I would recommend. How are you going to Bklyn, from Staten Is or from Man? There are stops on the way worth doing depending on how you're going.
  21. I don't want to sound mean, but Passover and "cake" don't belong together. Why not try a fruit crisp or homemade dark chocolate matzo (purchased matzo dipped in the best dark chocolate}. Even homemade macaroons dipped in dark chocolate. If this is for a present, I might suggest a bottle or two of Kosher for Passover Fox's Ubet. This may sound weird, but this is a vastly superior product than the regular Ubet because they have to use sugar instead of corn syrup. Do a taste comparison then stockup if you're into that kind of stuff.
  22. What's next? The bouncer, the list, and the velvet rope?

Left on Chestnut Ridge 1st shopping center on right side. It has a few restaurants in it and a large gym that use to be a Grand Union. Bring your own Champ. glasses if you're going that route. Your mantra for tonight is "New Style Sashimi" and Specials. Enjoy.
