  1. I went for lunch today, had skirt steak, grilled vegs and mushrooms & onions. The steak was very good, prepared the way I like it( med rare). The grilled vegs were good; the usual suspects, peppers, mushrooms, yellow squash and onions The room was as bp1123 described it. The dining room was less than half full (I went at 1:30) and was not noisy, but I imagine when it fills up you won't be able to hear yourself.Thats not what ths place is going to be about anyway. I had a few minor quibbles that I spoke to the manager about; they drowned the steak in sauce that wasn't neccessary and the mushrooms & onions needed salt. He thanked me for my honesty and told me that was why they were having this shakedown period. The entrees were half price so my bill came to $19 with two ice teas no alcohol. One other minor thing, the place is in Patterson not Clifton. The manager told me that the owner decided to advertise that way because they were afraid that people wouldn't come to Patterson at night. I'll be back. BTW; it's a stones throw from the Patterso greenmarket.

  3. The Star Ledger had an Ad on Fri. that said that they were going to have a pre opening 1/2 price on all items on their menu. This is from 10.08 thru 10.12. I'm planning on going tommorrow for lunch and will report after. Tommy, I finally got my pictures and animation back so I got rid of the other one. My daughter did this to me. BTW: The Patterson greenmarket is very close to the restaurant and has good selection of farmers on Sat and Sun. in the summer thru the end of Oct. The rest of the year thre are a number of veg., meat and fish stores in the market that are open 7 days a week. The prices are excellent.

    Olive cake

I got mixed reviews on the olive cake. People who like strong tasting black olives loved it. Others thought it was too strong. I happen to like oil cured olives, so for me it wasn't too strong. I liked the consistancy and the cake sliced perfectly. I think the next time I make it I will use less poscutto, maybe 5oz instead of the 7 the recipe calls for. I also think that I will use a mixture of black and green olives. I also found some other recipes on the internet. One of them had alot of sauted onions in the dough. I'm going to make this one next and will let you know how it stacks up.

    Olive cake

I made the cake today. I'm bringing it to a dinner party tonight . I made a few changes, out of necessity. Instead of the green olives I used a combo of oil cured and gaeta olives, I also used a very peppery evoo. I had to substitute half swiss (ementaller) and half parmasan.I shredded these very finely in a mini chopper. I baked the cake on the long side of the recommended time and got a loaf with a crispy top and moist sides. I'll report later after dinner.
  6. Speaking of grill pans. How about microwave grill pans? It only makes one thing, thin sliced bacon, but it makes it great.

    EV

Screw E&V. Its lived on its reputation too long. Go right on rt 46E to La Riveria 421 RT 46E Clifton NJ 973 478 4181 I'll meet you for lunch, I work right down the block. If not, try the seafood salad and the bolognese sauce. Lousy wine list, but if you ask nice they'll let you bring your own.
  8. When I originally saw this article in CH I thought to myself that the only two things I liked about this store was the prices were good on certain items and that it was all in one place. The quality was no better than a good Supermarket and the dairy and cold cuts( there's no fresh items) were about the same as as a supermarket. The chocolate and candy seledtion was mostly low end, although it is a large selection. I've got nothing good to say about the coffe unless you're into Arabic brands. I tried them and didn't like them. The pasta and olive oil selection were much better when the store first opened. The bread srlection always seemed a day too old. The cheese is the usual prepackage stuff. They do have two items that are hard ro find; Sabra and Party time spreads. The olive choices are cheap but limited. For me personally, I'd rather go to my two or three favorite places and do just as good if not better. I suppose if you live outside the NY,NJ area this store is worth the trip.
  9. This sounds great. If there's room I'd be interested in going.
  10. Absolutely. Generally when I go with my family on Sunday night, we are the only Non-Korean people there. There's anouther Korean restuarant in Clouster(Cresskill?) thats more upscale and has private rooms upstairs. I think the food is about the same as Asia Garden but the place is much nicer looking. I can't think of the name. Anybody know what I'm talking about? Its near Peking Duck House.
  11. I don't know if Korean food has been sugested for a Egullet dinner. There's a place in Tappan NY called Asia Gardens that I've always found very good. They have BBQ tables and interesting things from the kitchen. They also have Sushi(just ok). The owners and the waitresses are always very nice and really take care of you. They don't have private room, but the place is divided into 3 rooms. I've seen groups of 10 or 12 eating so I'm sure this wount be a problem. I'm sure we can work something out with them. Then there's always Lighthouse in Fairveiw. They don't have the selection and seem to be more into molten tofu soups than BBQ.
  12. Nick and Tommy I'm going to start a new thread on the Korean thing.
  13. Nick; I generally agree with you about the record, but don't pop a blood vessel. Remember the kids have to go to college By the way when are we going to Korean?
  14. I'm afraid I don't see the point of using a wooden cutting board if you're just going to cover it with plastic anyway. How is this different from using a plastic cutting board other than being cheap enough to throw away? I guess I wasn't really clear. I use the plastic covers when I'm cutting poultry or fish. It keeps my board clean so I can cut and chop vegs without dulling my blades so quicly.
  15. I've had many different knives, Henkels, Wustoff, And Dick. I recently(about a year ago) bought a Global(not the ceramic) vegetable knife(about 6"). This knife is superb. It has great controll and balance. I like it so much that I went out and bought the larger size(about 10"). Its also reasonably priced, 40 and 60 dollars. BTW: Its a one peice all SS knife, no wooden or rubber handle. You would think this would be uncomfortable; no way!
  16. I've always used a wooden board(I flirted with ploastic, but it dulls your knives terribly). I do use those extra thin plastic "covers" that you can find at Trader Joes. They cover the board nicely and are cheap enough to throw away(1.50). They also go in the dishwasher with no ill effects. I recently say one use plastic "covers" at Shoprite.
  17. I assume chocolate would be acceptable, nothing flavored. Maybe by coco content? What about chocolate chips or chocolate covered grahams or pretzels, etc, etc. I got dibs on the pure chocolate, mmmmmm chocolate
  18. Westwood and Wayne do not have wine, but the Westwood store has an A&P liquor store next to it . The meat is prepacked, as are most of the vegs. The selection is similar in both stores.
  19. Just ran across this thread and Tommy is right, stay drunk. If this isn't possible try 3 double cheee White Castles no grease filter

    Fried Chicken

A slightly different version(oven fried) that my mom made to bring on a picnic. cut up chicken sqaked in buttermilk coated in cornflake crummbs seasoned with salt, pepper, onion and garlic powder, and cayanne powder. baked(oven fried) in her mothers well oiled roasting pan. I can still taste that chicken today. Great cold the next day.
  21. My favorite is Royal Crown(I make a special trip every time i visit brooklyn). Its on 14th Ave and 66th ST. Its a quick trip if you live on 3rd or 4th Aves. They have the best Italian (long and round) loaves around. Their olive bread is superior, and they have what they call stone bread.A ciabatta like bread that has a large amount of corn meal on the outside of the loaf. This gives it a very crisp crust. Their pastries and cakes are good quality "Italian bakery" style. If its great bread you're looking for this is the place. By the way they alo have a store on 14th near 63rd in Brooklyn.

    Veggies

I'm wondering why not? Is it a matter of preparation or is it the health issue? Is any vegetable that is fried not counted?

    Veggies

I don't think you need veggies. I think they make the meal. Whats burgers without the fries, whats steak without the salad, what's roast beef without the mashed potato. Protein doesn't stand alone without some veggies,I think that veggies can stand by themselves. As far as long cooked(overcooked) vegs go, just ask some old time Italain about that.

    Veggies

I've got to agee with Cheffie3. Deborah Madison's book really covers the topic excellently. I went to her restuarant(Greens) about 20 yrs ago, what a revelation, Veggies have never been the same for me. One my favorite veg dishes is a chopped salad(no lettuce). Just chop up your favorite salad vegs(cucummber, onion, peppers tomatoes(I know its a fruit), carrots, blanched string beans, etc). Mix with a can of chick peas(rinsed) some anchovies(or not), olives, feta, the juice of a lemon, ev olive oil, pepper and chopped herbs. Let it sit for a hour, grab some good bread, for sucking up the juices. Thats a whole meal in itself!
