    Sloppy Joes

My kids will only eat it with wax, as indivitually wrapped American cheese is known in my house.
  2. NJ2FLA, Paulies is on RT3 in Clifton. Its a weird little place, big sign almost no room inside. The pizza is just OK. On RT46 you have Pizza Town(wonderful) and Lodi Pizza(also good, but not as good). There's also Brunos(great Sicilian and mussels). These pizzarias are all on the westbound side of 46. On the eastbound side is La Pizzaria(next to Krausers). The funny thing is that there seems to be more good Pizzarias and bagel places(anouther thread) in NJ than there are in NY. This comes from a guy who grew up in LI and lived in NYC for 20 yrs. I baked bagels for about 7yrs so I know the differnce.

Mankindwich, as in all mankind loves this sandwich.
  5. What about water dogs? Hank's Franks(buy 8 get one free), RT 46e just before Tetterboro Airport, have those 2oz Sabretts that seem to go down in just two bites. They have the usual toppings Texas, hot and sweet onoins, kraut and relish. Their dogs seem a little "cleaner" than regular pushcart dogs, mzybe they change the water more often. Just a side note Sabretts has a store in Clifton where you can rent dog carts for parties

    Dallas BBQ

Maybe 20 yrs ago. It was the place that got me started going down to crab boils in Maryland(but that anoughter thread).
  7. The WHITE MANNA "Diner" in JC is very similar to WHITE MANNA in Hackensack. The look is just as run down. Behind the counter(oval not square) they have the same grill and soda machines. they make the fries in the back, where can't see them. The fries are the low grade frozen crinke cuts that are delish if you order them well done. The burgers are prepared in the same method(ala White Castle). The wrapping paper is the same and the "robot" who prepare the burgers also remembers every order exactly. The burger are about a half step below Hackensack, but their main claim to fame(in my mind) is their cheese steaks. They are the Steakum type served on white toast. They're open 24/7 and great on the way home from NYC after a long night of partying.
  8. First time I've seen this thread. I want to put my vote in for Pizza Town on RT 46 west in Lodi. Great slices! They always seem to be fres( not oxidized) thin crust, tart sauce and lite cheese. You can't get any extras on a slice, but you can on a whole pie. I think the place was an old Westons that they added a screened dining area with picnic tables.

    Dallas BBQ

Your 100% right about BBQ. When I lived in the city we went there often. Decent enough ribs, but the onion loaf was the best, I don't think I've ever had better. Do you rember the name of the restaurant across the street that had Maryland style crabs?
  10. J&H is much different then the orignal in Patterson. The old one was o hole, the new one is bright and clean. The old one was like Hot Grill but not as nice. I think the dogs were comparable. The new one has two things I like alot, dogs with coleslaw( I've only seen this at the Hot Dog Hut in Hackensack) and tater tots. The chilr sauce is okay and the prices are alot higher than other places,up to $3.00 for a hotdog.
  11. Since this has gotten to other hotdog places let me include Hot Grill in Clifton. They have excellent fried dogs with superior chili. They also have good frozen fries and if yiu order it well done all the way you get it like a Texas weiner. Delish. Forget Goffle, forget Clixes their booths are too narrow.
  12. I use to live in Bklyn and for my money Royal Crown on 14th Ave and 66th street always had the best Italian bread and olive bread.
  13. Let me change the subject a little bit. How about Supermarket dogs? How would you rate them? For me Its always been Hebrew National natural casings(very hard to find since Hebrew National moved to Indiana about 15 years ago). Their Knocks are great also(either boiled or in cabage soup). Then comes Shoprite brand, Black Bear all beef natural casing. In third I would say Boars Head. What about cooking techniques? I almost always grill, but occasionally like them boiled.
  14. Becuse like most people they grew up with certain foods that their families made for them and thats what they like. This happens everywhere.
  15. When I called the factory they told me that they supply Balthazar and many other restuarants in NYC. They also said that they have very few customers in NJ and only one retail customer(Jerry's).
  16. Called Balthzar today before I read Nick's post. They told me that the only one that carried the bread (besides restaurants) was Jerry's, which is down the block. They also told me that they hope to have a retail store by October or sooner. This is a great thing as most of the bread i've had in northern NJ is magrinal at best Steve T
  17. I was cruising down So Dean St in Englewood today(on my way to Jerry's). When I passed a factory building that said Balthazar on the door, it also had some vans out front that said Balthazar catering on them. Anybody know if they have a retail store at the "factory"?
  18. I would put it in the same league as Kings. As far as Dagastinos there was one in Montvale a few yeasrs ago and went out of business in less than a year. I think that they are owned by A&P( they used the same bonus card).
  19. How many poeple in NYC, or for that matter any other big city, really "get" good food. Maybe 2%?. In NYC that comes out to maybe 200,000 people(more than enough to keep every "great and innovative" restuarant busy. I'm betting that in NJ the percentage is about the same. For every person who loves cutting edge food there are 50 who would rather eat at Cheesecake factory I think most people would rather eat at home.Iwonder how much innovative and cutting edge cooking is going on in those kitchens? More than goes on in any big city.
  20. Carmines works great for the kids. Just take a few more people with you. The portions are served family style and are huge.
  21. ShawtyCat: Three places come to mind. Fudruckers in Paramus, Its Greek to ME in Westwood and Ridgewood, and the Coach House Diner in Hackensack. Fudruckers is marginal but noisey enough so no one will hear your kids. Its Greek to Me is decent greek food with a good kids menu. Coach House is a real good diner with everything and a superior salad bar.

    Gennaro

It must be the old space, its been about 1 1/2 years since I've gone.

    Gennaro

The food is good and reasonably priced. The only problem I have is that the space is very small, for a big guy like me this sucks
