    Lasagna Wars

And who better to judge? Most of us are a bit food obsessed!!!
  2. Stuck at home while we get a new oil tank for our furnace. Trying out a sage sausage stuffing. Roasted a few chicken breasts and pulled some cranberry balsamic compote to go with everything. Oh, yeah and some green beans.
  3. oh..yeah we are getting hit tonight!!!!
  4. cool......copied out some of them.....lets compare notes sorry Oldhobo....due to life haven't made it to the library this week.....it was tough but will try for tomorrow......
  5. I have been given my assignment for this year's Reed Family Extrava-grazing. Portuguese sweet bread Sage sausage dressing I'm negotiating some carrots with sage honey and olive oil now.
  6. yup...that's copyright law spoken as a librarian of almost 40 years
  7. Mrs. Grumpy face here. I've been craving German food - maultaschen, sauerbraten, spaetzle, red cabbage...... Went out to lunch at a local German place and it was sooooooooo below what I was expecting. There seemed to be no taste in anything. Undersalted and the red cabbage tasted like it hadn't seen a lick of vinegar. Looks like if it ever gets cool here I'm going to have to make it myself.
  8. If you can borrow it from a library you might like to check out William Woys Weaver's book Pennsylvania Dutch Country Cooking. He has a recipe that looks do able in it. Or pm me your snail mail address and I'll send a copy of the recipe to you...my library has the book.

    Chili

@kayb I was first introduced to frito pie down Hooks, Tx and I love it. It was ubiquitous at the Walmart, rodeo and at the football game.

OH....MY...GOODNESS......... even though it includes beans this is probably one of the best chillis I have ever eaten. Need to thin a bit with some water or beer. Johnnybird would like it a bit sweeter(cinnamon a la Cincinnati). But this is a tweakable recipe. I will let it sit overnight then take a jar to my butcher so he can taste it and let me know what he likes/doesn't like about it. I can't wait till tomorrow so I can heart it up then make one of my favorite things from my time in Texarkana.....frito pie. Will pour over some fritos then add some chopped green onion, Cholula chili lime and some grated cheese.
  13. Done.....can't wait to hear about the results. Good luck with your dissertation. I remember mine fondly.
  14. all-righty then.... testing out a recipe for a new book that includes beef cut into cubes, ground bison and ground pork. The instructions said it feeds eight.....eight linebackers, maybe. I have the first go round in my Dutch oven but will have to split up this in order to add the next set of herbs and the beans. Smelling pretty good so far.......
  15. Hooah.......hope your food is better than that up here. Hope to see you when we do a road trip down that way.....
  16. when Johnnybird is gone it becomes a mainly vegetarian area around here. Dinner tonight was tomato basil soup with some croutons and a salad and some black krim tomatoes with olives and grated cheddar cheese. Last night was hot and sour soup with some vegetarian summer rolls.
  17. I adore...love...crave...black licorice. My grandmother and I used to pull the black jelly beans to eat ourselves. Unfortunately in my 20s I found out that it does cause heart problems for me and I have had to cut it out since then.
  18. for the years my MIL was alive ...and therefore I was cooking holidays .... the Reeds HAD to have baby sweet gherkins. Cranberry sauce out of the can AND OceanSpray cranberry orange relish. I made a (homemade) green bean casserole with fresh green beans, cremini in a béchamel sauce but those canned onion rings. I also substituted a sweet potato casserole using vegetable stock instead of the canned sweet potatoes/butter and marshmallow glop. I could not care less about the turkey......give me the sides any day. The turkey is for the sandwich for dinner.
  19. in my "To order from the library" notebook...........
  20. but I love you anyway................ grew up with spicy and sweet and fat and salty
  21. Now if you had put a very, very thin slice of aged cheddar on those while still hot........... reminds me of my great grandmother's spicy molasses cookies
  22. following the breakfast for dinner thoughts..... corned beef hash with extra sautéed onion and hard scrambled eggs with hot sauce and ketchup
  23. Bison burger with crisp turkey bacon and a frico made with shredded mimolette and aged cheddar and a slice of the last tomato from the plant.
  24. uh.....would it be cheaper to send all the booty home via some way than pay the airlines? don't know...just asking
  25. YEAH!!!!! It has finally started to cool down here. Planning on making some mushroom soup tomorrow. Sunday is supposed to be rainy and cold and miserable...planning on emptying the freezer out to make both vegetable and chicken stock to use in making more soup. John has asked about some butternut squash soup and I found a recipe for butternut squash and pear soup that looks good.
