  1. I haven't made it, but quite a few people on a local(singapore) cooking forum I go to have. Here's a couple of their tries with the recipe. http://bakingmum.blogspot.com/2007/05/hokk...milky-loaf.html http://karlsfoodie.blogspot.com/2007/05/ho...-milk-loaf.html http://bakingfiend.blogspot.com/2007/05/joining-craze.html
  2. What about this? http://schneiderchen.de/237Hokkaido-Milky-Loaf.html
  3. I finally went and got the book 2 weeks ago. I've been "stalking" this thread, and eyeing things to make. Everything just looks sooooo good!!! But I finally made the applesauce spice bars today. Didn't make the glaze though as I was out of cream and didn't add the nuts (Hubby hates nuts). What can I say? It was awesome! Made the black and white banana cake last week, was quite nice too (seemed a little dense though?) but I think I prefer my banana bread to be chocolate free. lol. Thanks Dorie, for all the awesome recipes & book.
  4. Yeah.. it looks something like this. This is the black/dark soysauce version (sorry for the blurry pic)... we call it "chai dao kueh" or radish/carrot cake. And yeah... the dark soy sauce that is used to fry this isn't very salty. In fact, its usually a mixture of dark soy, normal soy and sweet soy... with salted radish (chai poh), and garlic. Yum.
  5. I'm looking to purchase a new kitchenaid mixer. Probably a Pro 600 mixer. Does anyone have one and have any opinions on it- good or bad, to share? I'm also looking at getting an extra bowl- worth it or not? The normal bowls are about $50-60 I think, but I found some Copper bowls too! Are those really worth the almost $200 pricetag? Thanks! I've never had a stand mixer before, so any help would be greatly appreciated.
  6. It's steamed plain radish cake, diced up and then fried up with garlic, salted radish, egg and sweet/dark soy sauce! Hehe. Think its mostly found in Singapore and some parts of Malaysia.
  7. Wahhhh. Your pei dan chok alot of liao! Looks really awesome with the you zhar gwai also! *drools* And the wings look so crispy! 1 order of each pls!
  8. Here's what I had for supper last night (friday) Chai dao kueh.
  9. Where I am in portland there's Delivered Dish From the site: They have quite a varied "menu" from different restaurants around town, ranging from wings to chinese to sushi. I had only used it when I was at a friend's place (I stay in the far burbs so they don't deliver to me ) and it was quite fast and the food arrived at a nice temperature. There's a lack of 24 hour places here though other than your generic denny's/Ihop and the like so no late night deliveries other than pizza. ------ When I'm in Singapore... there's Dabao.sg. I haven't used it yet but my friends have. They love it that they deliver up until 2am and you get all the local food (its a bit expensive, but that's what you pay for not wanting to step out of your house). And its only $2 for delivery. (You don't really tip in singapore either). On the other hand, there's quite a lot of 24 hour places that we can just walk to from where we stay.. no matter where we are cuz Singapore's tiny.
  10. If the recipes don't work out... try looking at a local cash and carry/smart and final near you. They have these big jugs of sweet and sour sauce. These might be closer to the restaurant (americanised chinese version anyway lol) version than the typical grocery store kind? Good luck!!
  11. lol. You guys are cute. I finally have a "jian de liao ren" picture to post. lol. Most of the pictures I take don't look very good cuz its usually piled on and eaten immediately. But... here's my dinner from last night. lol. Pork fried rice with crispy shrimp chilli on the side.

    Miso

Hiroyuki- that was the color it was already when I bought it. The texture and color is even throughout too.. no moulds or dried spots. (It was put in the bottom corner of my fridge, probably the coldest spot?) Anyway, I took the plunge and made some miso soup with it. It tasted normal. Wasn't gritty and no off taste at all. Yum. I guess I'll find out tonight if it was good or bad? Haha. I'll update tomorrow. *grin*

    Miso

Sorry for the blurry pics.. This is what it looks like. I looked again for expiration dates. No luck. Even checked on the underside of the lid/container. haha. Tastes salty, and smells like miso. Hmm!

    Miso

I have this tub of miso I bought... I think maybe a year ago? Age undetermined but definitely more than a year. lol. It smells ok... no expiry date at all on the tub. How do you tell if its expired? *grin*
  15. I'd recommend S.E Asia as a whole. Even though places like singapore and malaysia are next to each other, or vietnam and thailand and malaysia are sandwiched together... the food is all different! The different cultures and lifestyles... And airfare from one area to the next isn't too expensive either. I have a few friends that did backpacking trips that started from Thailand--> Northern part of Malaysia and then making their way down to Singapore and then catching a flight from Singapore to Indonesia to round the trip out. The exchange rates make it an awesome way to travel cheap(er?).
  16. This episode made me sick. What cliff did should have earned him jail time, probation or both. Grabbing hold of someone and not letting go when person says stop is false imprisonment. Dragging etc = kidnapping. Maybe they can't prosecute him or sue because of "contracts" they sign... but seriously, signing up to be on a COOKING competition and waking up to someone twice your size manhandling you while 3 other people look on and goad the aggressor on? Seems to be more like a bad episode of COPS rather than top CHEF. If I were Marcel, I'd be having an attorny sue the crap out of bravo/the other 4 ppl involved. I had been thinking for the past few episodes that he was getting rather ganged up on in kind of a "lord of the flies" way... and wondering what he was doing to annoy people that much. (He doesn't seem to do anything at all other than to be a little odd... ) But I don't think ANYTHING he could have done or did would make him deserve treatment such as this! Ugh. Now about the food.. Chocolate and livers? Ewww. I don't even want to imagine the taste and the aftertaste that would be biting into that. *shudders*

    Leftovers

OoO. glad this topic was bumped up. I'm alone this week so I'm not really feeling too bothered to cook food that require lots o preparation....rumaged around and came out with something that was absolutely yummy. Didn't have fresh pork defrosted so looked at what pork was leftover and found some frozen in small ziplocks. This is what I ended up with.... Smoked pork that was simply brined and then smoked. Kimchi, gochujang. and sesame oil. oh. and h2o of course. Basically a kimchi jigae except with smoked pulled pork (without any added seasonings like bbq sauce). It tastes soo damn awesome. smoky kimchi and pork. It all melds into a lovely red mess and eaten with some fluffy white rice? Definitely doesn't taste like leftovers. Might need to smoke some more pork.....
  19. Chocolate fountains are fun tho!
  20. NY magazine did his pork butt for a holiday dinny party article, recipe is here. The ingredients basically are: ← Thank you so much! Store is having a sale on pork shoulders @ $1/lb. Guess what I just got? lol. Now... if only I can get some of those drinks....
  21. Oh My..... That looks absolutely awesome . Wonder if we can replicate it at home! Probably could... do you know if the pork was seasoned or can hazzard a guess? Hehe. I love the Dulce de Leche experiment! I've never had any before... I'll wait for the results of the experiment before trying! Awesome blog!~
  22. Hey chris, Watched a few of your shows this and last week! Great show. Husband wants me to ask if you're planning to do any shows in portland, oregon. He says "please?!" haha. So far, my fav foods are the shrimp/lobster thing at the fish market, the fried alligator + other seafood, and... the buffalo burgers! Oh, and the garlic fillet mignon stir fry!! We soooo need a drooly smiley.
