  1. I have one of those automatic ones too. I got it off of criagslist for really cheap as compared to buying it off of the website- http://www.soymilkmaker.com . I used to use it really frequently to make tofu, and soy milk but its in storage now because I ran out of organic soy beans, and alot of places that sell soybeans here have really old soybeans (doesn't taste very nice). Might have to give that link above a try, and start using it again! Its really so easy to make the soymilk with the machine as compared to making it by hand... All I had to do was soak soybeans every night (I made a fresh batch everyday since it made abit less than 2 liters) and then put it in the machine, add water and press the start button (it had buttons to start (both heat and grind), and then 2 others just to heat or grind)... it did the grinding, boiling etc. Washing up was easy too, since nothing was oily. The only thing was I felt bad about was wasting the okara, but I really didn't know what to make with it. Oh, and a friend of mine borrowed it to make almond, cashew and rice milks for her kid because he was allergic to cow and slightly to soy milk and she said it works really well for that too. So I'd say it's worth the price if you drink alot of soy milk and want it fresh daily... but if you just drink it occasionally, its might be too much $$ for something you use occasionally. I'd have to say though, making your own fresh tofu, from machine made or hand made soy milk.. is really awesome. Oh man, I really need to get some more soy beans to make tau fu fa.

  3. Got a jar of Miracle whip. I'm now a convert! It makes egg salad alot more tangy than mayo.. yum! Boyfriend isn't convinced, he says that its too sweet. Guess we'll just have to have both in the fridge. edited to add: hit enter too fast.
  4. Stuff I currently have: Frozen ravioli things that I got from costo, they taste decent and awesome for a quick, filling snack when rushed for time. Frozen Corndogs (I know But bf loves them and they're not THAT bad) Frozen potstickers from trader joes Frozen Eggo waffles (no room on counter for waffle makers to make my own) Frozen organic sweet corn kernels from TJ's Frozen pot pies (Yum!) Frozen seasoned fries. Lol. seems like i have so much snack foods . :
  5. Hmm... seems like the chicago ban on foie gras is starting to rear its evil head. Now other cities are thinking about it, and some are modeled after the chicago one.. read this about "Philly councilman seeks to ban foie gras" http://www.centredaily.com/mld/centredaily/14600409.htm
  6. Thanks for blogging this week. Its really nice seeing all the food prepared, especially when the weather was so bad! Cheers to all 3 of you for trudging along, despite some difficulties!
  7. Yay, I don't feel as odd now. Things I can't stand Oysters- raw, cooked, in stuff... YUCK. Tried it in a few incarnations, hated them all. Wine- Tried quite a few times, 1 taste and almost always a gag reaction. Beer- Just tastes like carbonated bitter water... Clams- I loveee clam chowder, but i hate clams in any other form(strips, whole, sauteed etc) Mussels- See clams. They just seem so... rubbery! Cilantro- Ewww. Just smelling it ruins my appetite Celetry- See Cilantro. Same effects. Makes me wanna gag. Raw tomato- Can't stand it. Have to pick it out of salads and burgers and stuff Raw onions- to me, it overpowers everything and anything. Cooked onions are awesome though. Red sauce- On pizza, pasta.. ewww. Cream cheese- I don't mind it in frostings as much or in sweetened stuff, but eh, the block of cream cheese just tastes like milk gone bad to me. Pies- Don't like them, be it apple, peach, chocolate, banana cream. Usually too sweet, or too tart or don't like the texture (hate cooked fruit) Bell peppers- cooked or raw. yucks. Diet sodas- I rather drink water. It leaves a really icky aftertaste for me, and I feel sick after even drinking a sip. Chestnuts- roasted, or waterchestnuts in chinese food, they all just have really icky textures for me. Raw cookie dough- can't stand the texture and the thought of eating raw flour/eggs. Just feels... slimey? Uh oh, after previewing the post... seems like I'm a reallllly picky eater.
  8. I did! I washed it twice with hot, soapy water and then dried it with a paper towel. That's why i found it strange that it was smoking!
  9. Is the wok suposed to smoke alot when you first season it over the stove top? I just bought a 14inch carbon steel wok from the wokshop, and tried doing it over the stove top over high heat. There was like tons of smoke... and wondering if I did it right. (Can you tell I've never seasoned a wok before?) All the woks I've used back home in Singapore were already way seasoned before I was born!
  10. Cake definitely. I don't like eating most cooked fruit, and where I grew up in SE Asia, we don't really have pies, at least not when I grew up. My first and only exposure to pies was apple pie from McDonalds... (nuff said?) I also prefer sweet to the usually tart/sour/gooey fillings of pies. So.. its Cake for me!
