Why not just become a BREATHARIAN? ( As in the book Survival Into The 21st Century by Viktor Kulviskas) or HERE>Just Breathe! Personally, I've said it many times, I have seen our insides, and I've seen my own teeth. I believe that regardless of theology questions, we're omnivores. I live accordingly. You may make your own choice. For as long as it's legal to, that is. Soylent green may come to pass.

Well, today I had to swallow a lot of pills, and get a few injections. Afterwards, I danced with the ceramic ring of err, magic colors (yeah, that's a good name for the mess I made) and I couldn't even think of food. Too bad, because for the next ten days I am on a severely restricted diet. Crumblies! Oh, wait, I see that there are NO crumblies allowed. DARN. Although, I AM allowed salty broth, as much as I want, and the MD even circled it and wrote me a note "To get your blood pressure up a little, sweetheart!". How, um, NICE. On the bright side, I'll probably lose a little weight, without REALLY dieting, just by STARVING! PS: I'm heading out for dim sum, followed by uni, in exactly 11 days. My FIRST dim sum in NJ, too! PM's accepted for dining friends!

What's the ultimate/weirdest food to deep fry?
Rebecca263 replied to a topic in Food Traditions & Culture
I adore deep fried sweet shrimp heads, but I dream of taking semi-frozen uni and dipping it in panko and THEN deep frying it. -
Yay! Tomorrow is my LAST VISIT to the medical center in Metuchen! Unfortunately, I'm not better, but it was worth a try! And, of course, I got to know the area a bit! I can't decide where to eat lunch tomorrow, Indian, Dim Sum, Turkish? Indian, Dim Sum, Turkish? I should be finished by 1, any final suggestions?

I don't have TV anymore, and I missed this entire season of the only 2 shows I really love -Gilmore Girls and Eastenders. WAH!

I nominate Churchill's Pub, in Miami. My Favorite Dive! Even though I can be pretty upscale at times, this is my all time favorite bar, and it has been since I was younger than my kiddle. You just can't imagine the variety of individual you can meet there, the variety of drink you can imbibe there, the variety of sound and art that you can experience. Of course, over the years I've had different drink favorites there, depending on the barstaff at the time. Whenever I'm in Miami, I hit this place, and YES! I DO eat a scotch egg there, too! Mike makes great ones, and I don't care what anyone else says about the 'quality' of the food. The bartenders are usually all really cute indie type girls, and friendly. There are different crowds there, an exPat Brit crowd, there for the satellite football, the 'we think we're alternative' crowd, because the place is 'interesting', the locals, because you can walk there and the drinks are cheap, the artists, because it's very performance friendly. The place is immense, and has a huge patio out back, with a few different areas. I've seen great performances there, and had a few of my own, too! Besides, Mac's Club Deuce hasn't been incredible for years, and Piccadilly has been ruined for coolness by their recent 3/4 million dollar 'renovation', although I DO have to attend things there, at times.

I've been a worker and a business owner, and I agree completely with eatbc. I wouldn't want to work with anyone who would actually go to such lengths just for a momentary feeling of revenge. Not that I haven't. But I did the intelligent thing, I found the guy another job, and he left the shop that I was working in. Plus, he was grateful to me, which made me seem like 'his kind', and took me out of his line of fire completely. I say work smart, don't quit stupid.

Gee, Alchemist, you could always carry an ibrik around with you! Better coffee, AND instead of reading a book you could 'read' your grinds!

OK, guys, I got the Joy of Cooking, 1943 printing. Normally, I sell these off, but this one, I'll keep for awhile! edited to add: We'll be making the French Bread recipe on pg 471, tomorrow!

Add 7 'new' books to my already over stuffed cases and boxes: Jewish Cookery, Joy of Cooking(everyone talks about it!, Chinese Gastronomy, Foods From Harvest Festivals and Folk Fairs, Cooking Without a Kitchen,It's A Picnic! and1947 Nat'l Council of Jewish Women's cookbook (Spiral bound!). 10cents American each. I bought a few hundred other books, but the other cookbooks are all doubles of things I've got.

BAKED YAMS ON THE HALF SHELL: It's a dairy recipe for baked yams, pulp scooped out and mashed, then mixed with raisins, salt, butter and sugar, then restuffed and browned. Sounds yummy, and I got some yams for .29 a pound today at the 'Farmers' Market', can't wait! I only have the Italian, French and Chinese of those books myself. They're a fun read, but a bit dated, of course.

I drool on your books! Pam, in your honor today, I got a NEW cookbook, Jewish Cookery, by Leah W. Leonard, 1947, the 1975 printing. 10 cents, American. We'll be having her recipe for Baked Yams On The Half Shell tomorrow night.

Rochelle! Yay! Kiddle says "Yay!", too! We have used a few of the ideas from your blogs; we love your taste buds. I was going to suggest roasted cauliflower, just because we've been addicted to it this winter. Let me just add this, raising a person is the most fun, most fascinating and most rewarding thing you may ever do. Our best wishes to you on becoming a family. Blog on, and, um, keep some crackers and seltzer handy? -
Of course, one could always do what I did at 14: make him a lovely cake, deliciously iced by your artistic mother with his name in white icing on a dark chocolate frosting, the entire recipe made with NaCl replacing the C12H22O11, which I disclosed by writing the recipe out for him! He bit. After he figured out the 'surprise', our friends made him eat an entire slice. Sweet! I felt even better after the school suspended him for peeping in the girls' locker room!

Actually, that's the plan for her birthday. ← Guys, in my book, toys, caffeine and home cooked meals are the BEST love tokens you can supply! If you're getting her a Playstation.. get Katamari Tamashi... great game!

Deal Delights, the NEW edition! PamR was just asking in another thread about kosher cookbooks, and although this IS a kosher cookbook, because it was written by a woman who keeps a kosher home, it is my all time favorite cookbook. I own literally hundreds of cookbooks. Seriously, because I am a book fiend! I use Jim Fobel's baking book a bit, I use a mid forties' edition of The Farm Journal cook book often, A 1960 edition of The NYT book, and I go to James Beards' books as well (he got me started with my first batch of whole wheat bread, a lifetime ago!), but THIS book, Deal Delights, has been opened more often than any other book in my homes. It's a compendium of real Syrian Jewish home cooking, and every recipe is authentic to my childhood, and DELICIOUS. I only keep about 40 cookbooks out for regular usage, BTW, the others are in my nightstands and my bedroom closet, for easy bedtime access! edited by me to add: I don't own the Joy of Cooking, Fanny Farmer, Betty Crocker, or the BHG books! I DO have a few copies of Escoffier, but have used them VERY rarely, in fact, not in ten years! I DO love anything touched by Julia Child, though. Oh, dear, I'd better stop now.

I just SOLD 11 cookbooks on ePay, and then I turned around and bought 6 new (for me) ones. Nothing great, just some Gourmet editions that kiddle is wanting- little completist. Here's the kicker, though-shipping was 2.00 for the first book, and 1.00 for each additional. The books were priced at between .01 and .40 apiece. My total, for 7 books, mostly HEAVY Gourmet editions? 10.18. PM me, if you want the seller's name, folks, there were lots of books in the under 5 dollar range!

I'm so excited to know about this. I've been dying to get my hands on the red and white editions. ← ME TOO! We had a puppy that destroyed my first copy (wedding copy) and my second copy was STOLEN! I swear, our home was robbed, and they took my Deal Delights! Poopa Dweck has run out, it seems, and this new version is pretty much the real 'deal' . But, let's face the facts, that red book is an icon. My stepmother tried to get me another copy, and she has to buy new copies for all of her newer granddaughters, now, too. She told me that she knew girls who paid over a hundred dollars for their red copies. (It's a bit of cache to have one of those, in the community.) I believe her, too. I'd pay a lot for another copy. I've got my eyes open, I'll PM you if I ever find more than one.

Lots of Sephardic cooking is fruit and vegetable based, and very healthy, if you watch your olive oil pouring! One thing is certain, Sephardic food keeps you 'regular' with all of the grains and fruits and vegetables. Melissa, I looked at your photo and I have those paperbacks on the top in MY collection, but my copies are so old they're hardcovers! Do you have the Chinese Kosher book as well? Those books are funny.

I'm trying to figure out what this post looked like BEFORE editing. You made my day! <Rebecca shuffles off to get the bread out of the oven, giggling 'witty boy on eGullet!'>.

Well, Frenchy is always a good adjective, in my book! Where, exactly, in Jersey, are these places? Kiddle will be ready for another meat meal in a week or so.... (watching 16 year old rub her tummy after finishing off a pound of fresh rare roast of cow.. ).

I'm very grateful to all of you for doing this blog. My kiddle has read most of it with me, and she vows to never smoke anything, other than food, forever. The honesty that you all showed, about the real difficulties in quitting, sent the message not to start home. You're all some of our favorite eGulleters, and I hope that you're around, in good health, for a long time to come. Bonuse for me: I got to learn some great new recipes and methods of cooking, and I had something eGullet related that is really meaningful to share with kiddle during this snowstorm, too! THANK YOU! edited by me to say:BONUSE! hahahaha!

That's funny about your collection being all over 30 years old, Pam! Because I used to deal in vintage books, I've got an immense collection of older Kosher cookbooks too! And, in fact, looking at my collection, nothing modern at all, except for the Deal Delights cookbook. Do you have an edition of that? It's a fabulous Syrian Kosher cookbook. The Sephardic Women's Organization of the Jersey Shore (Deal) has put out a new version recently, with the proceeds going to charity.Deal Delights! Every Syrian Brooklyn/Deal girl I know gets a copy when she gets engaged, and Syrian girls can COOK! I bought a second copy for my kiddle a few months ago, because there's no way that she's taking mine when she leaves the nest! edited because I went into my favorites and found the DIRECT link.

We just ran outside and made snow candy with honey. Drizzled the stuff on some fresh snow, and then lifted it up and ate it! Silly, I know, but we're first timers!

What is the weirdest thing in your freezer?
Rebecca263 replied to a topic in Food Traditions & Culture
Chicken livers and film. In this crowd I'M the boring one!
