  1. My neighbor (who kindly showed me where the pilot light is on my heat the other night, thereby getting all cobwebby and sneezy in the process, nice man!) was just outside digging out a path for his truck (rural area, no plowing in our tiny development yet). I went outside to help, bringing him a cup of coffee, and asked him "Do you have to go to work?" Nope, he ran out of cigarettes! You guys are sure going to have more personal freedom at the end of this journey!
  2. Oh, it's definitely odd, just like me! Something useful for the news to do! I love the newspaper grill, it doesn't take up a lot of space in my closet, and it cooks food in minutes. Sometimes when we entertain guests I just bring it out to grill appetizers or desserts, because a newspaper grill is a real converstation piece. Accompanied by ample alcoholic lubrication, or teenage hormones, we have some really fun moments with the grill. (I hope I got the link right!) edited by me to add: converSTATION! hahahahah!
  3. This morning was special. This morning I taught my daughter how to make coffee in the ibrik. She was a bit nervous about the foaming process, but things were fine! When kiddle drinks ibrik coffee, it is prepared in the cup in a unique way. She only drinks ibrik coffee when we have canned whipped cream available. Her method is thus:Spray whipped cream into coffee cup, to rim. Pour in coffee, slowly, to rim. Stir. Wait a minute or so, slurp down to dregs, turn cup over onto saucer, and BEG "Fortune, fortune!". I'll need to think up a funny story, pronto.
  4. Those ravioli look like little golden sacks of treasure! The edges look so beautiful, you did a wonderful job.
  5. All righty then! That's the next item on the agenda, after a massive quantity of feathers for the upcoming masquerade ball mask. ah-choo!
  6. I suppose I'd have to augment my newspaper grill if I wanted to smoke something. I would like to smoke a turkey, I had one a few months ago, and it was delicious! Does everyone really adore the Bullet?
  7. Ummm... 6 1/2 hours from jersey! That's probably what you meant. There's actually a place in Easton PA that does a credible version, more on that here. It would be closer if you're really jonesing for a Garbage Plate. ← Heh, heh, yup! I'm from South Beach, my brain is a little sun baked and it doesn't work so well during snow storms!
  8. Wow! For some reason this sounds fascinating to me. I don't think I could eat half of it, but it would be interesting, especially once you explained the "hot sauce". I'd go for the cheese sandwich bit, myself. Rochester is 6 1/2 miles away, hmm.
  9. Holy Beans. Wow. I would love to do this. Too dear for me, the price of equipment! I would be so happy if I could make a smoother chocolate. Thanks for allowing us to watch the process!
  10. BREAKFAST:no croissants, because I do not know how to make them! Usually, steel cut oats, with fruit. Not much fashion talk at the table with kiddle, hmmm. I DO wonder why? Maupassant, because kiddle loves to discuss the back story... i.e. people's lives, and Maupassant is a recent read. She read Zola's Complete Short Stories a few years back, for the first time, and we talked a LOT about the habit of writing emotional 'hooks' in stories at the time, I recall. DINNER: Pasta only once a week or so, mostly we eat various salads and Syrian food. Maybe we SHOULD do theme dinners, I'll ask... Cars: Well, a month or so ago we were discussing the 'french fry' car, as kiddle is wanting one, but in general, cars don't usually come up, even nice Italian ones! Fellini, because we tend to watch films in series at home, and we are going through Fellini with a side of Maddin right now. Also, because kiddle has discovered the bottom shelf of one of the bookcases, with some books on Fellini! De Sica, well, she has seen Bicycle Thieves, maybe Vittorio should be next on the list! I can always start off with his turn in the Warhol Dracula film, can't I? And, she'd adore seeing Bocaccio, she really got a kick out of the book Decameron. Great ideas!
  11. Susan, you are an ace with that camera. That final photo of the egg, mmmm, just beautiful!
  12. I am so impressed by this blog. Everyone who is participating is just doing amazingly well, not just at quitting cigarettes, but at keeping each other propped up. I've enjoyed experiencing the camaraderie that happens between everyone during this challenging blog. Kudos! About those nuts... I did a quickie version of that cayenne bit, and I added some Brazil nuts into the mix. Yum, but guess what? The cayenne got into my keyboard! Bad girl, keeping snacks by the keyboard. Now my computer smells SPICY.
  13. This is a very interesting thread. When it first opened up, I thought that I couldn't possibly list the subjects that are discussed at our meals, so I kept tabs for the past couple of days. I found that topics vary somewhat, by time of day. For breakfast : (daily with my 16 year old)we've discussed Maupassant, the weather, masturbation, schedules, tooth brushing and eyebrow maintenance, sewing, baking, the film 400 Blows, joining a new charity, and what to eat for dinner. With the 2 year old that I babysit the breakfast topics were the book Potty Time, apple for snack, and the next day it was cake. Cake, cake, cake? Cake? "After you finish", is the answer to that burning hot subject. That kid likes to eat. At every meal she is talking about the next one. Future eGulleter! Lunch topics: with my sister- parking, critiquing of the food, real estate, Juicy Couture and our hair. With my 5 year old niece the subjects were what Barbie have I bought her, are we going bowling, how good the 'cheese'(tofu) in her soup was, and her reading a book(she's just learning, it's a big thrill, you know). With my 16 year old, the subject was how to sew a button so that it won't come off, Steppenwolf, various meatball recipes, and how to prepare the chicken for dinner. Dinner: the heat breaking down, which led to a discussion of moving back to South Beach, La Dolce Vita, Fellini, Fellini's relationship with Catholicism, The Most Beautiful Mathematical Formulas (she's reading it, I don't understand it), shoes for a gown, making a mask for an upcoming masquerade ball, politics, and the veracity of the supposed virginity of some of her schoolmates. Whew! The only unusual thing I DID take note of is that everyone talked about books with me, except my sister.
  14. Owning this book must be an indication of being an eGulleter! Someone gave me this book as a hostess gift, he said that he didn't know if we drank... ergo...!
  15. A vintage glass tumbler, 6 oz size. My collection of these are all the same upside down A-line shape, but the have various leaves and such engraved on their sides. Utilitarian and pretty, to me. I like the upside down A-line shape, it feels good in the hand to me. And, 6 oz is just enough for a couple of shots of rum and whatever I might add.

    Salad!

Tonight we had tabbouleh, but since I'm trying to empty the refrigerator we added some shredded red cabbage to ours. Since I adore scallions, we used 8! So: 6 lemons, juiced 3/4 c bulghur 8 scallions 6 plum tomatoes 2 large cucumbers a large bunch of curly leaf parsley 1/4 head red cabbage Chopped it all up, then drizzled it with olive oil. Waited as long as we could, althought we should have waited longer, and dug in! Plus, home made flat bread, for making boats. Tomorrow I am attempting a salad with barley.
  17. Lucky you! We save our shekels for meals out and great ingredients at home these days, but I'll be watching your thread for ideas!
  18. Isn't that site great?
  19. I'm having a terrible time, and that sandwich IS talking, to me, at least. And, to top things off, kiddle, who is 16, for goodness sake, just put the pasta into a 3 quart pot, AND left it sticking out of the top! urrrggghhh. I need a break, and it isn't happening. I've sent to her to her room, to read her Gourmet collection, and report back on the requirements of basic cooking of pasta, which Mommy goes to such trouble to make!

    Sirloin tips

Grill it with Balsamic vinegar, lovely. Make sure it's as rare as you like your meat, and I wager you'll really enjoy that nice aged beef.
  21. You are all doing so well! and, wow, I'm so jealous, I've never eaten elk, and I hear that it tastes very buttery and smooth. Yum. One of my friends says that sucking on lemons got him through some of his worst cigarette cravings. I would think that Pico would do the trick much better, though. If there's a Mexican grocer near any of you, you may like to try it. Pico comes in little packets, and it has different flavors. It's basically a grind of pepper/lemon and salt. You open the packet and lick. Well, that's how I eat it, anyway!
  22. We had roasted beets on a bed of greens with balsamic vinegar. No challah, because I am too sick to leave the house today, and so we had brioche from the freezer. Kiddle was overjoyed to discover that she actually likes beets. Yay, and thank you, Rt9 Farmer's Market, for the one dollar pineapples (I bought 5)! Shabbat Shalom, everyone!
  23. Somehow, Shalmanese, I can not imagine that you would ever make anything that doesn't come out tasting good! I believe that you could give canned soup a decent end!
  24. I got my ibrik a lifetime or two ago. It's fabulous, and it makes a great rich cup of coffee. No filter, very environmentally friendly. If anyone ever wants to come over for a taste test and a lesson in the finer bits, pm me. BTW, got a few of those Senseos to test from Philips last week. Why they're still testing them out in the consumerarena is anyone's guess. A bit of an oily texture to my taste. There is a slight sort of crema at the top of the cups that is very attractive, and feels nice on the tongue. Better than percolated or drip, though I can't see why you would want this over a mokka pot or an ibrik or french press. In my mind, the mokka is a better cup. The Senseo has a large footprint on the counter for a machine that makes 2 cups maximum at a time, too. Plus, it could just be the pods that they sent me, but the coffee had a bit of a stale taste. No dates on the pods, either. Very offputting. I've seen a new product in Europe for making your own pods, it's a plastic 'pod' that you put your own grind into. That would be an improvement. Well, back to the topic at hand, I can't wait to hear about the aeropress!
  25. Kiddle and I just looked at each other, after looking in the kitchen, and we both declared "Tonight might make the "worst meal at someone's home" thread!" I have a headache, we're going to order in.
