  1. 180. Ramen noodles cooked in a tiny cramped space, slurped by our heroes that have come in for shelter. Various snacks pilfered from the shelves while the pounding rain pours on the metal roof. CLUE: In a dream sequence, the daughter appears from under the table to join in the ramen feasting. She is fed kimbap by one of our heroes. Shortly after, the heroes face off with the beast under the rain. Korean film The Host? LOVE IT!
  2. I put the rice in a fairly shallow dish and lay a very damp paper towel over the top. Microwave for 50-75 seconds, stir, zap for another 75 seconds or so. Works great.
  3. Tonight was clean out the icebox (I love my grandmothers 'fridge term). Skillet roasted chicken breast with tons of chopped garlic n- ginger, mushrooms, celery, green/red/yellow onions, artichokes, sprigs of fresh thyme (with flowers) and rosemary. I periodically basted the chicken and vegetables with olive oil/butter/lemon juice/herbs. Served it with a vegetable pasta salad and an ice cold Michelob (husbands contribution to the meal )
  4. During the summer months I love to wake up with a glass of hot, sweet tea and a few summer rolls served with nước chấm or a peanut sauce. I like the same rolls during the winter months but add a mug of hot broth. Sets me up perfectly for the day.
  5. I use about a cup of thawed peas in my fried rice. The quiche idea is wonderful. A pea and fresh herb quiche is really, really good. Sometimes I fold peas into my mashed potatoes and also use them as a baked potato topping (fried in butter with onions). The little bursts of *green* flavor marry so well with the fluffy potatoes.
  6. I'm not sure how to go about making your own cookie cutters but perhaps you could cut the cookies individually (freehand) or get a cactus cookie cutter such as these and tweak them to look like the character? Looks like a fun project.
  7. #174 There was raw corn at the dinner table in WarGames but I don't remember a banana??
  8. "...a rural, snowy, rice-producing district..." What a beautiful description. I'm thrilled that you're blogging, Hiroyuki. Best wishes for you and your family.
  9. Are blue drinks cool with the Red Bull crowd? What about a simplified Blue Hawaiian? Pineapple juice, Blue Curacao, rum.
  10. I've made this recipe (broth only, not the risotto) and it was very good. With all those ingredients it should, huh? I don't care for rind water either. How long did you simmer yours?
  11. Well, I *would* but boxes of dry cereal are sadly empty of toys these days. I'll still nibble a box of Cracker Jack (mostly the peanuts) just to check the toy out. And why chew a hard, pink brick of gum if it isn't to giggle at the Bazooka Joe comic? I have a bit of a, ahem, history of buying packages of bad, terrible gum just to get Charlie's Angels, Raiders of the Lost Ark and Dune cards. If I ever buy fast food it's those meal-deals with a prize (Halloween is the *best* toy time). Snag a fry, give the rest to the crows, sip the diet soda and play with my toy.
  12. And I would add, from Easy Rider... George Hanson: [Drinking his Jim Beam] Here's the first of the day, fellas! To old D.H. Lawrence. [He starts flapping one arm like a chicken] George Hanson: Neh! Neh! Neh! Fuh! Fuh! Fuh! Indians.
  13. I would as long as the chef was able to skillfully prepare Thai, Chinese, Vietnamese and Korean food. If not, then *heck* no.
  14. Richters? Ebay? Papagenos? Blossomfarm? Linglesherbs? My lord but there are alot of different mints!
  15. Perhaps this thread might help you? Please help with cannele recipe
  16. Flavored oils are great for adding flavor and fat in small, intense doses. Nut (walnut, hazelnut, pinenut, toasted peanut, etc) oils are my old reliables for green salads, chicken (especially poached breasts), meaty white fish and grilled fruits (grilled apples finished with hazelnut or walnut oil is very good). Considering her ethnic preferences, perhaps tamales with a chicken (and fruit?) filling, fried rice with eggs and favorite vegetables, sweeter curries, Mexican or Greek oregano is an intense, lovely-stinky for fish, chicken, whatever... Also, consider unorthodox uses for herbs, spices, oils etc.
  17. And your shot hit it's target! The spoiled boy-child whines and whines for "Kentucky chicken!" to his rural Grandmother. She doesn't understand what he's saying except 'chicken.' So after she travels miles to the market and spends her few coins the boy gets a nice, fat, *boiled* chicken. Yet another fine Korean film.
  18. Glazed wedges (or rounds) of winter squash? Perhaps a honey chipotle glaze?

    Lentils

I found a few threads that might be helpful... French Green Lentils, Your favourite way to cook them Umbrian Lentils from Spoleto, Do you know anything about them? Red Lentils, what are these? Indian Grains and Legumes, 101, Newbie Nessa strikes again... help? Lentils..., ...that rock Lentil and Spinach Soup, How do you make yours?
  20. Season and grill the steak as usual. Artichokes stuffed with panko crumbs and seafood medley. Grilled cantaloupe with ice cream.
  21. petite tête de chou- This is getting to be too much! . Do we watch the exact same movies? You are correct again. I'll have to think of real obscure films just for you now . ← I had *just* watched Oldboy in the last few days. I'm not sure if the dumplings made me hungry or nauseous. Brazil made a lasting impression on me especially the restaurant scene you used as a clue (and those hats!!). Also, I tend to remember French films that feature cannabilism. Here's one- "Kentucky Chicken!" as whined by a young boy.
  22. I definitely prefer thick, bone-in chops. Juicy, flavorful and a bone to gnaw on, thereby prolonging my enjoyment. I brine and grill them almost 100% of the time. The beer-brined chops are super tasty. The fresh sage, molasses, hoppy beer and char are heavenly.
