  6. I can remember the '50s. It's the '60s and '70s that I have trouble remembering. When we went to Manhattan (The City), we had to "dress up." The Horn & Hardart Automat and a handful of nickels was fun and clean. A cup of hot water was free. Bars served free lunches. No women allowed at the bar. You could take-out tap beer from the bar in white cardboard containers. A bar was called a bar & grill because the law made them offer food, IIRC. The main Howard Johnson's was on Queens Blvd near The Lost Batallion Hall.
  7. You forgot the irregularly shaped lump of ice and the bits of sawdust. That's the way we drank it..... a long time ago.

  12. That's the one. The cheapest I can find it is just under $25. Where for $16?
  13. Ron Anejo Aniversario Pampero, if it's a bargain in Venezuela. You can get it in the US for about $30.
  14. Yes..... but be patient. It'll take a long time with a paper filter because of the higher-than-normal ratio of coffee to water.

You could try the "cold brewing" method. Some people prefer it to hot brewing. It also works well at high altitudes where water boils at lower temperatures. Toddy is one equipment supplier.
  16. There are as many recipes for Fanesca as there are people who make it. Generally, a young or fresh cheese. My sister-in-law uses mozarella.
  17. Fanesca is a heavy, Ecuadorian soup made around Easter. It contains salt cod, milk, cheese, ground peanuts, vegetables, many grains, beans and legumes. Very filling.
  18. I remember a butcher in Hampton Bays, Long Island, named Mickey's. His motto was, "You can't beat Mickey's meat."
  19. Thanks for the tips, Mike. I'll try Donecker's next time I'm in Lancaster. I tried Lombardo's once and went away wondering why the place was so popular.
  20. Thanks. Looking forward to more. So far, I've found The Loft, The Cabin and Strawberry Hill.
