    Spice Market

Before I give me opinion on Spice Market, i need to say that Jean Georges refused to write the foward to my book, so i might be a little bias. I was looking for a place to go last night and was hoping that the lighting of the tree and the horrible weather would get me in somewhere.. Well it worked, i called at 7 o'clock and was told they would be able to sit me at 730. The space is absolutely beautiful. Its like what the furniture at ABC carpet must look like before its used, destroyed, and marked up 1000 times. Its carvernous, romantic, and really warm. I was hoping to love this place. For such a huge place i was really surprised how everything came so quickly. We order the chicken samosas. With in 5 minutes they were served. This was a really good start, had lots of flavor, were crispy, tasted almost like a pastry filled chicken empanada.. (great) We then moved on to the pepper shrimp. Served with a pineapple on top. These were coated in coarse cracked pepper and had a lot of spice. Imagine throwing a mouthfull of toasted peppercorns in your mouth with piece of shrimp. (Eh). We then had the mushroom egg rolls.(ok) How bad can a deep fried thing filled with mushrooms be? We then moved onto the "squid salad". Perfectly fried calamari in a soggy, over sauced collection of vegetables. The water chestnuts and peanuts were the next thing i picked out after all the calamari was eaten. I could have lived with out this. At this point in the meal I had a couple of good deep fried things and a bad salad.. Does Fridays comes to mind? We ended with lime noodles and duck curry. The lime noodles sucked. Soggy, tasteless, boring. (poor)The duck was stewed so the meat wasnt the crispy duck i was hoping for.. It easily fell apart and my date actually thought we were eating beef. The curry itself was good, a basic curry that i often make at home. (ok) All in all, besided the chicken samosas, you could easily get any dish i ordered prepared better and for much less at . I dont think its was horrible, I would compare it to a Thai/Indian Friday's. (Not to insult fridays lime noodles if they have it) The space is worth going for alone.

    Rue de Bassano

Paris IS a dining area. And it's not huge. Maybe the rue de Bassano (how did you manage to find an inexpensive rental there? Wow, hold on to it and be thankful) is not the most exciting part of it dinnerwise, but this is not a problem since you'll never have to go far to dine well. So if you want my advice don't switch, get a guidebook of the Paris bistrots and brasseries, get a carte orange (public transportation pass) if you're going to stay for a while (it's free, you only pay for the weekly or monthly coupons), take some time memorizing the métro and bus routes, and do read the threads devoted to Paris restaurants in this forum! Hope you'll enjoy your stay and be warm and cozy in rue de Bassano. ← Well it turns out because of scheduling i will not be able to take that much time off. And luckily i was able to back out of my room.. I have had a lot of luck with this site and they have some good values. So if anyone wants it, as of sunday I got my deposit back so here it is: http://vacation.apartment-paris.com/en/des...7b92511415db6f1

  15. 2nd that re: Pietro's. last meal was too long ago, but i remember an excellent steak with a real bona fide caesar's salad prepared at the table. very old style, but not shy about the prices. actually the 43rd st location does not compare to the original location which had a huge amount of ambiance as well as great steaks. in moving, it lost both much of its clientele & its rakiskness. also, in all fairness, this was during the advent of many additional steakhouses in NYC, fragmenting Pietro's regulars. Pietro's was very similar to 2 other old-time Italian steakhouses: the original Palm (before the franchising) but still here. & Joe & Rose's, no longer. addendum: as i understand it from reliable sources, the original Palm is the ONLY one still serving dry-aged steaks, all the others serve wet-aged!! & supposedly, many of the other premium steakhouses around NYC, also serve wet-aged to their customers who mostly can't tell the difference. ← I often go to pietros with my one friend who is a garmento.. This place is still a huge hangout for the garment industry.. The food is excellent, from the italian to the steak. Love the shells a la nat. Homemade biscotti. Havent been to the old location, but this place is packed regulars nightly.

    Chinese UWS

that's classic i assume you are referring to shun lee west on W 65th? shun lee WEST, not the awful shun lee PALACE on the eastside, may be the best chinese restaurant in the city, & to characterize as boring signifies a lack of familiarity with the varied number of interesting selections on their menu ranging from mild-to-spicy; or using another criteria - every nite, 7 nites a week, 4 weeks a month, 12 months a year, year-after-year; shun lee has a filled restaurant with both regulars, & newcomers who ALL seem to turn into regulars. to even compare with saigon grill is particularly odd, these 2 are not in the same chinese ballpark. additionally, the much EG- touted grand sichian is very good, but not in the same league as shun lee west! ← Jesus christ! I am assuming you like this place. You are right i am mistaken, I had only been to the Sun Lee cafe, the attachment to Shun Lee. At this place i had the dim sum, and found the dim sum to be very boring and overpriced. However, it is too far get delivery to my girls place.. Also in terms of the menu at shun lee i really dont like that type of stuffy chinese food. Something i never find in china. Would you compare the type of cuisine close to the food at mr chow or chin chin? Cause i hate both those places.

    Chinese UWS

Saigon grill is really good and that seems to be my go to.. In terms of Shun Lee palace, I am not a fan.. Really boring stuff.

    Chinese UWS

You are really funny.. You seem so excited about that place in your post.. How quickly did the 4 egg rolls you bought last ? I am sure its good, But i am looking for less retro chinese and more authentic. .. I actually have gotten their fried yuca when I needed a side for a chimmichuri steak i made. Good black beans too..
  19. Anyone know of a good chinese restaurant on the UWS 80's westend ish. I have been enjoying thai food, vietnamese food and even tibetan shambala, but cant seem to find a place that has even decent chinese food.. Eventually, I caved and went to Ollies.. That place was god awfull. Is cottage any good? Any sichuan. Thanks.
  20. Yeh i would say Esca also.. I think it would be really hard to get into Gennaro on a friday night also.. Il Buco is a beautifull place, however the seafood doesnt stand out in my memory.. You seem to be all over the board in terms of location. Would somewhere on the UWS be helpfull, because then you might one to try the neptune room.. I havent never been there so I would ask people there impressions.
  21. good points!!! and good post.. But infact i have to disagree with you, i would say that this movie plays on the "intellectuals" eogtism. I wouldnt call this movie unitellectual, i would call it intellectual porn.. This bolsters these people and further proves their superiority over the common man.. This tells them that them and only them are the ones responsible for the well being of such sloths..These intellects are responsible for taking care of the common man who has no choice but to succumb to the advertisements and will of the powerful corporate monsters. And your right, no person yells out for the labeling of the harms of fois gras, because its obvious to them, if someone could afford it, then they obviously are intelligent to know its harms.
