Am planning a 50th birthday party for a friend & want to get her a really special birthday cake - no Costco sheet cakes!  Thanks for your recommendations.

Petite Pastisserie in Dumont makes fabulous cakes.

Avoid Mazur's in Lyndhurst..

Mara's in Denville, and I believe they also have a store in Westwood is quite good. Also, the Swiss Chalet in Morristown (a bit pricey though)

B&W Bakery - Hackensack makes (in particular) an outstanding Black Forest cake.

Carlo's Bakery in Hoboken has beautiful looking cakes -- and very creative.  They usually have 2 or 3 in their window at any given time.  Very creative...  I've never tasted one, but their pasteries (traditional Italian) are very good.

Carlo's son does all the cakes. He actually was on a Food TV Cake Challenge. The cake he made was spectacular.

Carlo's Italian cakes were legendary..Not sure how they are now.
