Just beginning to get involved in understanding wine -

Recently saw a list of Geoff Lasts' (The Wine Shop) in Calgary -

Top Ten Ragtag List -

I thought it might be an interesting way to start tasting some nice wines

Anyone tried any of these or have any thoughts/comments on the list

1) Chateau de Beaucastel Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2001 $74.00

2) Ridge Santa Cruz Cabernet Sauvignon 2002 $43.00

3) Altos Las Hormigas Malbec 2004 $18.00

4) Tenuta Sette Ponti Crognolo 2003 $48.00

5) Marcel Deiss Alsace $24.00

6) Bodegas y Vinedos Alion 2001 $86.00

7) Waterstone Cabernet Sauvignon 2003 $38.00

Not a bad collection at all, but top ten based on what?

You could certainly do much worse than tasting any of these, although I also imagine that you could do better than some at similar price points for similar wines.

I've had all but 4, 7, and 10. But the ones I've had have been from different vintages. As John wrote, a person could do worse. If I had to pick only one, it would be the Brocard Chablis. And, wow, Alion has certainly shot up in price.

My one would be the Beaucastel which is not a bad price in canadian dollars.

I personally would choose Pesquera over Alion in general, although I have not had either from the 2001 vintage yet.
