Ok... finally found one at a store.. it is called Malanga, or root malanga. If I had come across this before, it is likely I saw the "pink" version and not the "white" version of which my friend had, and as pictured here in.
It is also known sometimes as "Yautia".
Hope nobody actually went insane over this 
There was a thread back in May where someone consumed something and didn't know what.. and malanga was suggested.
