Paris Wine Stores

Recommended Posts

In addition, there are the Nicolas shops/winebars all over Paris--the one at Place Madeleine, not far from Lavinia, is particularly good.

As they say here, Oui mais.... Nicolas shops vary depending on where they are; in the swank districts one sees interesting stuff; where I live, it's pretty drab.
Here are a few to consider, with information I have gathered. I can only vouch for the first two and the last:

Caves Augé, 116 boulevard Haussman, 8th, Metro: Saint Augustin or Miromesnil, Open: Mon.: 1:00-7:30 p.m., Tues.-Sat.: 9:00 a.m.-7:30 p.m. This is a traditional wine store, open since 1850. Small in size; excellent selection of wines and spirits. Marc Sibard speaks English and is extremely knowledgeable

I can vouch for it; first rate. At least, when guests shop there and leave a little offering of old Calva, it's just fine.

Based on your fine help, I shall hie me over to Lavina to look for the rivesalte 1974 Domaine Vila 15

Are there some landmark or just good-in-the-know winestores that we should visit.

Now that we're settling in we're getting fussy, so stores in the 5th would be preferred but we're good at the bus system now so anywhere will do if it's worth the trip.

I am always amazed at the pricing in Paris (taxes make alcohol 2-3x as costly in Toronto where I live).

k!

In addition to Lavinia, I would also try Caves Legrand in the 2nd. I believe it is one of the oldest in Paris and is located in the Galerie Vivienne, a beautiful covered passageway in the 2nd. The also have a wine bar so you can stop and have a glass of wine and something small to eat.

Cave Augé is another amazing store which dates to the 1800's. They specialise in vins naturels and have one of the best selections in Paris.

In the 5th, you should try Caves du Panthéon, which also has a great reputation.

And, not far in the 6th is La Derniere Goutte which has a Cognac tasting tomorrow with La Gabare.

I have heard good things about La Cave de L'Insolite in the 11th but haven't been.

Success!

At Lavinia we found the Rivesalte Domain Vila 15 and splurged on the 1959 which was only E50!

Also got a bottle of LaGrange 2001 for E35!!!! And the last bottle of Knockando (scotch whiskey).

Life is good in Paris!

Off to visit some more of Felice's recommended wine stores.

I am so glad you were able to find it. I'd love to hear your thoughts if you go to any of the others. I know La Derniere Goutte is open today because I was there yesterday, but I am not sure about the others.

I decided to try La Cave de L'Insolite yesterday and really recommend it. It's a lovely little shop in the 11th which specializes in vins naturels. They have a very nice selection and were extremely friendly and helpful. The owner is obviously passionate about wine and happily gave me a lot of information about the wines I was buying. He also opened a bottle of something to try while I was there and I ended up spending about 45 minutes learning about the wines I bought and about vins naturels in general.
