The Museum of the American Cocktail

I would like to officially announce to the board a project that I, and several others that you know have been working on. "The Museum of the American Cocktail".

This project was started by Dale and Jill DeGroff, and has as it's primary objective to create a physical museum which can be the focal point for historical information and displays about cocktails and mixology.

We are quickly working towards opening the museum in New Orleans

Mixologist: The Journal of the American Cocktail

One of the first projects of The Museum of the American Cocktail will be to start up an annual print publication that will be used to gather articles on topics related to the origin and history of spirits, cocktails, and other subjects that relate to mixology and the art of the cocktail.

We are officially announcing a "call for papers" to gather articles for the first publication, which we plan on making available Janurary, 2005.

This piece, in the USA Today mentions several new beverage related exhibits in New Orleans. These are a major improvement over some of the other recent additions to the New Orleans drinking scene, which usually have a sign out front reading, "Big Ass Beers!"

Edited to say that if any of you are planning on attending the SFA Field Trip this summer that virtually every place mentioned in this article is on the schedule, including in some way or another, Liz Williams. the handsome woman pictured behind the bar in USA Today.

I'll be in NOLA in August for the Society of American Archivists conference...I know a lot of the archivists are interested in the museum's "library of classic cocktail books" -- now there's some fun scholarly research

The museum is a lot of fun! I was there for the grand opening back in January and got the oppertunity to meet Dr Cocktail.

We took a few pictures of the bartenders making and demonstrating drinks. The appitizers were delicous and the drinks werent bad either

In our current incarnation (ie. in a temporary space inside of the New Orleans Pharmacy Museum) we don't have our library in place yet, although there are several very old books on display in the display cases.

We are making progress with the arrangements for a more permanant location, where we will have more capabiliites for expanding the scope of our offerings.
