Canadian beer in "stubby" bottles

Wow.... so many memories (some drunken and some not). My grandmother had little to no money but always made sure some National Bohemian was kept cold in the fridge for visitors.

Back in the 80's I slammed down a few thousand of those Labatt 50 Ale's in the stubbies. I'd completely forgotten about a few of the other classic goodies that we used to drink here in central NY and when we went to southern Ontario in the summer.... John Labatt's Extra Stock, Labatt's Velvet Cream Porter, Moslon's Brador... mmmm..

I wonder how many bottlers had the infamous "Bigmouth" style? It was either Pabst or Utica Club that had it for awhile back in the 60's in this region. There was a fairly aggressive marketing campaign that would be considered tame by today's standards but was pretty racy for the times, using lots of double entendres related to the name.

Here in SE Pennsylvania Piels came in the wide mouth bottles, they called them "quickies" I also recall Schmitts in the stubbies as well as Reading.

I believe there were others as well, but time clouds the memory. Perhaps Ortliebs?

and we had the occasional Nat Bo as well. National Boheminan was always real cheap and had a rep as rotgut around here. We drank Schmitts so we had no room to talk

If I was sitting on the patio having a nice cool one. I'd be thankful for the longneck. I've watched people play around with the neck of their bottles. Man and women alike. Could you imagine how their heating up that cool liquid with every touch, if they had a stubby bottle. The longneck would not eliminate but slow down that problem.

Unless of course you carry around your own bottle cooler. I can't say I've done that.

On a lighter note: My hubby loves warm beer. So I guess its all a matter of taste.

Unibroue's self-styled old-fashioned La Bolduc is available only in stubbies. Maybe the beer will be distributed outside Quebec now that Sleeman's taken over Unibroue. Or maybe it'll be dropped from their line...

Rightly or wrongly, I'm under the impression that one reason stubbies were popular with the breweries and retail outlets was their compactness, the fact that they take up less space. This was an issue in mid-1900s Quebec, where space was at a premium in dépanneur (convenience store) fridges and display racks and where the most common method of delivery was via bicycle (have head that Quebec is the only jurisdiction in North America where you can have cold beer delivered to your door).

You can have cold beer delivered here in Ontario too.

I think Montreal is the only place they deliver bud though.

You mean you can call at, say, 10 p.m. and have a chilled six pack at your door by half-past? Can you have beer delivered on Sundays? Ontarians have to buy beer from a beer store, right? Are there beer stores everywhere, even in small towns? I'm up on the LBCO but, as you can see, not so clear on Ontario beer.

Lots of places in the states deliver booze to you at home.

Living hard will take its toll...
