Cheese shop

Not a dining question, but I'm looking for cheese making supplies (rennet, culture, cheese presses, and whatnot). It would be nice if there were a cheese shop ared the DC area that I'm missing, but anything would help. Something in Philly perhaps?

Welcome to eGullet.

I don't know of any particular store offhand that has what you're looking for. You might try calling a local dairy to see if they can point you in the right direction. Or try the Maryland & Virginia Milk Producers Association (301-953-2964). They may be able to help you out.

Please post and let us know what you find out.

I'm sorry I don't have any information for you, but I am curious: what sort of cheese do you make? I've never considered making cheese myself, but now you've got me interested.

Well, none at the moment. Not without rennet and culture anyway. I'm sick of paying $5 for fresh ricotta at the Dupont and Clarendon farmers markets--and then you also have to deal with people insisting on pronouncing words like "ricotta" like native speakers of the langauge from which the word was borrowed (never mind that HALF of English is borrowed words). It's annoying. Anyway, I thought I might try my hand at making cheese, so I picked up Ricki Carroll's _Home Cheese Making_, and I'm going to give it a go. Now just to find the ingrediants.

Good idea of the poster to ask those people at the market.

You have her book, you can buy her ingredients at www.cheesemaking.com

I've delt with New England Cheesemaking Supply Co for a couple of years and have always been satisfied.
