I wonder if you ever came across this type of garlic in your travels. In Mexico City, in one of their huge open food markets was a stall that sold only garlic. They had something that they called Japanese garlic. They were small individual kernels about the size of a hazelnut. They had hard shells and when you cracked them open, the garlic inside was so sweet that you could eat it like candy. I brought back a big bag of them and they were good for several weeks.
