Egg Slicer

I use an egg slicer for mushrooms as well as eggs, but I manage to break the wires every 4-6 months or so. I've tried an Oxo slicer and a number of cheaper, nearly disposable slicers, but I'd really love to get one that I won't have to constantly replace. What works for you?

I have the Leifheit both the egg slicer and the mozzarella slicer and they have held up under heavy use.

The world belongs, however, to those who can look at the glass and say: What's up with this glass? Excuse me? Excuse me? This is my glass? I don't think so. My glass was full! And it was a bigger glass!" Terry Pratchett

I would love to hear some answers from eGulleters on this one.

I just went through another egg slicer; one of the wires broke again. It was a fairly cheap Farberware model and did not last long. Now I need to purchase another, but I need some advice about a better make/model that will last longer than 6 months.

Cook's Illustrated Magazine recommends the Leifheit Pro Line Stainless Steel Egg Slicer, which is available from amazon.com:

And the Chef's Egg Slicer, which is available from the Chef's Catalog, looks fairly sturdy, too:

Any opinions from those with experience?

Thanks for your advice, andie. I thought that the Leifheit looked good. Any others have experience with this make/model?

A friend gave me a slicer almost identical to this.

I use it to slice mushrooms and it does a great job. It has blades rather than wires so not much chance of breakage. According to the site it will also slice eggs but I admit that I have never tried it on eggs and it just doesn't look like the appropriate tool. Next time I have a hard-cooked egg on hand though, I will give it a try.

It has the word "Genius" on the handle but no other identifying marks.
