Knife Blocks and Steak Knives

I am following this topic and can't help but ask: Why would one store steak knives in a knife block that is usually in the kitchen near the prep area? I have always considered them part of a table setting and hence keep them with the rest of the table cutlery although in a separate divider. Am I missing something?

I used the steak knife slots in my old block for paring knives, but....

If I had fine edged steak knives rather than serrated, I might keep them in the block rather than leave them together in a drawer. Or more likely get a second small block just for the steak knives, and keep that with the tableware rather than in the prep area of my kitchen.

My steak knives are very very sharp. I'd rather not keep them in my cutlery drawer, even if I did have room for them in there. They live in my knife block. My knife block isn't all that far away from the cutlery drawer or dishware, so they're easy enough to grab for table setting.

Practice. Do it over. Get it right.

Mostly, I want people to be as happy eating my food as I am cooking it.

Ditto. My knife block (the one with the steak knife slots) sits on the counter just to the left of my cutlery drawer. It keeps the knives out of a drawer which I find to be a plus.

I'm sure there are a few exceptions but the blocks I've seen don't have long enough slots for most decent sized steak knives. They're usually 3 inches long give or take. No steak knife I would want is that short so it renders that part of the block pretty much useless as I don't have 8 paring knives.

I have steak knives with big wooden handles and fairly wide, rigid serrated blades. They were dirt cheap at the Oneida Ltd. factory store (less than $2 each if I recall correctly) and I use them rarely - perhaps one each month. They stay in the cutlery drawer but not in with the other flatware - off to the side where they're not in the way. I have a knife block but with a chef's knife, a boner, a serrated knife, a bread knife, a paring knife and a rod.... there's no extra space. And I really wouldn't want a larger block - no way.
