  1. What are some other "artisinal" bakeries in the DC area. Would a place like "Gold Crust" bakery in Alexandria qualify?
  2. Having grown up in Kansas City, I still do not understand the association of slaw with bbq?
  3. Graceface: Welcome to eGullet. Any interest in the eGDC thread?

    Ground Pork

Welcome to eGullet Flapjack Willy. Were the ducks wild or domesticated?
  5. Bean Bag apparantly has experienced some unexpected publicity. They were featured in a Sacremento newspaper and the article was republished in 31 other papers around the country. They are swamped with orders and are behind in their shipping. Spelling edit.
  6. I've only been to the Breadline once, years ago, and I don't remember what I had. Perhaps we could organize an eGDC lunch for all of us downtowners at the Breadline. The only rule being that everyone has to order something different.

    Paprika

According to Russ Parsons, using so-called "sweet onions" for anything but eating them raw, is a waste of money. Whatever quality they have over other types of onions is lost once you start cooking them.
  8. I remember when Whitlows was located on 11th St., NW, downtown.
  9. Ivy's Place on Conn. AVe., just up from the Uptown Theater, has a similar feast with some Dutch sounding name that I will not even try to spell. You have to call them in advance to let them know you want this special meal.
  10. No, they do not allow cigar smoking at Sette. Perhaps the next event will be outside and it will not be an issue. We can put all of the cigar smokers at the downwind end of the table so as not to offend (or at least offend less). Edited to add: And, we should look into the feability of an eGDC shooting team. The food angle is that increased accuracy at the target range translates into more game on the table come hunt'in season.
  11. I suspect that weekend would be more difficult for a restaurant to accomodate a group as large as our seems to be. As for the weekend of the 23rd, I will be out hunting wild turkeys and morels. The middle of the week seemed to suit most everyone. PS: This thread should be eGDC, not EGDC.

    Meatloaf

Just use an envelope of Knorr Swiss brown gravey mix, or their green peppercorn sauce. That's what I always do. It's impossible to make brown gravey with what comes out of meatloaf. (or is it, I am of the belief that very little is impossible)
  13. Heather: one of your kids is getting more face time on eGullet than the other. The other demands equal time. The rest of you, we need to get cracking planning the next event. I seem to recall that Hillvalley volunteered.
  14. I think after tonight's event, I think we should request that the eGullet powers that be rename this thread. Any suggestions? It was a powerful event, agreed? Perhaps we should request "DC Power Event.?
  15. And just what kind of mushrooms have you been eating?????
  16. Today wearing pink shirt, blue striped tie and navy blazer.

Usually there are a few geese and ducks in there as well, but none right now.

    Corkscrews

Is there an experience that the collective might have with regard to the type of corkpuller that consists of a couple of thin metal shims that you work down between the cork and the neck of the bottle?
  19. In order for criminal charges to arise, first one has to convince a prosecutor that there is a case and then a grand jury has to be convinced that there is probable cause to believe that a crime has been committed and that a particular suspect committed that crime so that an indictment can be handed up. Obviously, given the age of the cases and the dubious memory of the witnesses issue, the prosecutor was not interested or a grand jury returned a no bill.
  20. Is anyone planning to bring a digital camera?
  21. That's really interesting - whenever I hear a steak referred to as "black and blue", it means Pittsburgh rare, charred black and crusty on the outside and cool and practically raw on the inside (my preferred temp for NY strips). It's the first time I've seen it used to refer to a steak with peppercorns and blue cheese. Cute. I guess Michael-not-Ray is quite the wordplay enthusiast. Me too. I thought it meant rarer than rare. Me three, but it sure sounds good.
  22. On occaision, i will buy a large container of their red beans 'n' rice, hold the rice, take it home, make my own rice, add smoked sausage, and voila.
  23. I shudder to think of the volume of business that Wegmans has sucked from all of the other grocery stores in the area.
  24. Perhaps because the turssing method is so counterintuitive is why I an unable to master it. I saw Darren's photo's and they did not help me.
