  1. Some places have signs (Fuddruckers) that say "no pictures." I think they think someone will steal their restaurant design idea and copy it. Are restaurant interior designs eligible for copyright protection?
  2. After looking at the picture of those 2 pig cookers going, it suddenly started smelling like hickory smoke in my office. How am I going to explain that?
  3. What about using one of the wire brush wheels that you can attach to an electric drill?

    Cooking Tunes!

    I listen to this stuff.
  5. The top of the Hotel Washington is a place that should not be missed for a celebratory cocktail.
  6. Presumably because you're a rancher...? Or is this some form of wierd Nebraskan hobby? I just have this mental image of you wrestling a beast to the ground and taking a giant bite out of it, al la Homer Simpson daydream. You need to be careful of cows.
  7. NulloModo, could you please describe this type of pizza? It comes from a chain headquartered at Rehoboth Beach called "Grotto's Pizza."
  8. There used to be a Price Club inside the beltway at Branch Ave. in PG County. I don't know if it is still there. There also is one just south of the Springfield interchange that has been there a long time as well. Also, BJ's at Landmark is an old timer.
  9. Is the Spice House running a post card campaign to determine where to put their next store too? Or is it just Penzey? We have no spice shops in the DC area that I am aware of. You folks in Chicago should send in post card saying that they should locate their next store in DC because DC has nothing.
  10. There have been Costcos closer than Sterling and Potomac Mills (though not as close as Pentagon City) for longer than I care to remember.
  11. I seem to recall that somewhere up this thread there is a speculation that Wegmans would probably not locate a store in MD because the liquor laws would not permit them to sell wine (I don't know if this is true or not). Also, it would be really hard for them to locate a store in DC because of their sheer space requirements (plus, I imagine that real estate is more expensive in DC that is is out in Sterling). I you accept that Wegmans is probably limited to putting stores only in the VA suburbs, there is little chance that they will run any specialty/artisanal (to the extent there are any) stores out of business.
  12. Just out of curiosity, what shops in the area would qualify as speciality or artisinal? The only one I can think of is Vace (the mold on the sausages in their cooler looks scary). Of course, there are the myriad latin and oriental groceries. And I not talking about the "gourmet" shops either. I have lived in this hamlet for over 20 years and it suprises me that I can't think of another local specialty store. It leads me to suspect that I am guilty of the apathy that Steve perceives. Who knows, perahps I can find one that has.... tasso ham.
  13. Wow, now I can stop for a burger on my way to/from Lowes.
  14. I stumbled on to this website that lists restaurants that have a corkage policy. I thought I would share it with the rest of the DC eGulleteers.
  15. Oceanaire has several wines by the glass and the prices are printed on their menus. I usually go for the Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, which they have on tap. I think their crab cake appetizer also is half price.
  16. I think naught: Nebraska-Corn (ever heard of the "Cornhuskers?) Kansas-Wheat
  17. Maybe you aren't, but it's awfully nice to have a source for HP sauce, Heinz beans, and good plain tea that isn't charging usurious prices. And, as far as Harris Teeter goes, it would appear that they're altering their stock in response to the appearance of Wegmans. Wegmans has the New York/New England regional foods market covered; HT looks like they're going to start doing the same thing for Southern regional specialties, more than they already were. They already had some of the staples (White Lily flour, etc.); now they're expanding offerings across the board. Last time I was in there, I noticed they've started carrying Mayfield ice cream, which I never thought I'd see up here. They also have better raisin bread than Wegmans', which has unpleasantly mushy raisins. I'd definitely rate HT a strong second in the Reston/Herndon/Sterling grocery arms race; a little work on their produce and they'd be even closer. Maybe thay'll start carrying.....tasso ham.
  18. Remember, whenever you go to Wegmans, ask for Tasso Ham.
  19. You should explore the tasting menu at Restaurant Eve in Old Town.
  20. There is an annual oyster festival in Chincoteague, VA every Columbus Day weekend that usually sells out.
  21. I figured that out when I saw the negative report on french food (his wife is from France) and the reference to the SO as a "him."
