  1. You might want to look into the Kamado or the Big Green Egg. I doubt any of these have the ability to very the distance between the coals and the grill. Usually, you adjust the heat by adjusting the quantity of air flow, like with the Webers.
  2. Many business will give a 2 percent discount if an invoice is paid within 10-days (2-10, net 30). Perhaps TJ's is able to bargain for more of a discount by offering cash on the barrel head. That could help further explain their low prices,
  3. When did Alton Brown change his name from Thomas Dolby?
  4. what does a wegman taste like? It's Wegman's flavored oil, not Wegman flavored oil. The difference in meaning is that in the first, Wegman is the person doing the flavoring, in the second Wegman is the flavor. Wow. Silly me, I was just going to let the bad joke slide. Thanks for backing me up with a strong case of English 101 whoopass. Does Wegman's sell cans of whoopass? It's "whoop ass" or "whoop-ass" not whoopass. Gosh, a guy can't have a little fun around here without getting his ass whooped.
  5. On the DC signature dish issue, I asked a good friend of mine who was born in Alexandria, VA, a close-in DC suburb, and has lived there all his life this question. He was unable to identify anything that would serve as DC's signature dish and concluded that there was none. He laughed when I suggested half-smokes.

  7. I was just reporting what the owner of a Montana gourmet garlic farm recommended. I just figured that since she makes her living solely on the basis of garlic, that she might have some superior knowledge. I guess she could be wrong.
  8. Here is what Nicole Smart of Montana Gourmet Garlic says to do with fresh garlic; PS - Since it's getting toward the end of garlic season [Nov.], if your garlic looks like it's beginning to sprout or dry out, simply peel the cloves and freeze them in a Ziplock freezer bag. They'll turn a strange translucent orange color but they retain all of their flavor when you defrost and use them.
  9. I got the Wegman's magazine in the mail yesterday, very slick.
  10. "If the French are drinking less in restaurants, they argue, it is largely because the police, at the instigation of the interior minister, Nicolas Sarkozy, have begun to treat drink-driving as a serious offence. "
  11. For those of you who are not "Sopranos" fans, Vincente Pastore is Big Pussy Bonpensiero.. He got rubbed out a few seasons ago for being an FBI "ear."
  12. I was thinking of working a trip to Jammin' Joe's into my pilgrimage to the Wegman's grand opening this Sunday.
  13. Is anyone familiar with a place called "Jammin' Joe's Barbeque" on Rt. 29 just before you get to Warrenton.
  14. To address the "ethics" of sneaking food into a movie theater; strictly speaking, it probably is unethical. The theater belongs to its owners and they have every right to condition the admittance of patrons on any basis they see fit. When you purchase a ticket and enter the theater, you agree to those conditions. By bringing in your own food, you violate the agreement you made with the theater owners. I would bet that the price of the theater concessions is higher than it otherwise would be because a certain percentage of patrons smuggle in their own food. Smuggling likeky raises prices for others. That is not to say that I don't give my kids a buck each and send them into the local CVS for candy before I take them to the movie. It may be unethical, but it does not cause me to lose sleep at night.
  15. Sounds like a lot of potenial for confusion (read that "trdemark infringement").
  16. Is there a relationship between the Firefly in DC and the one on Mt. Vernon Ave. in Alexandria?
  17. I went in the other day for lunch and ordered the Ventworm Nuts as an appetizer. I think the Ventworms had been in the tank too long without being fed because the nuts were not very juicy. Kind of dry and chewy, not juicy and creamy like I am used to. They sort of had the same texture as the Rocky Mountain Oysters that they serve at the Buckhorn in Denver. I sent them back and they took them off of my bill. I also suggested to the waiter that they might want to consider serving them with a cream or mayonaisse sauce.
  18. Perhaps I missed it when going through this thread, but do we "know" who the "Iron Chefs" will be?
  19. I wonder if they will be using fortune tellers, politicians, actresses and actors, sports figures, etc, as judges.
  20. Surf 'n' Turf. Not invented here (DC). And there is no evidence that the surf and turf in DC is any better than in any other city. We need to identify a dish that the entire population, both inside and outside the beltway, would agree is uniquely "DC." Edited to add: Welcome to eGullet Saturnbar.
  21. You really should check out Reeves at 1306 G. It has been in business in 1886. I think it retains some of the original waittresses.
  22. What are you supposed to do, snort the cottage pie and brush your teeth with the strawberry desert?
  23. The Hua Yuan was a favorite of mine when I was a poor law student at NYU in the early 80's. My classmates and I made periodic pilgrimages to the Hua Yuan. I have fond memories of their cold sesame noodles. Everything they had there was great. I can remember, now 20+ years later.
  24. about 300 degrees ... 302
  25. According to page M9 of this Sunday's Post, there is a place called Jammin' Joe's Barbeque on Rt. 29 just before you get to Warrenton. It says that they make their own rub and sauce (high praise I suppose). It also would be possible to work in some skeet or sporting clays shooting at the Bull Run Shooting Center.
