  1. And now McDonald's has problems with their salads in the mid-West: "McDonald's salads linked to parasitic illness outbreak that has sickened more than 100 people" Illinois and Iowa are currently the only two states impacted by the parasitic illness.
  2. Now the CDC is officially (and bluntly) suggesting to not eat this cereal: " 'Do Not Eat this Cereal.' CDC Says Kellogg's Honey Smacks Linked to Salmonella Outbreak"
  3. Nutella is going to have some serious competition. "Lindt Just Launched Its Own Version of Nutella" You can get it on Amazon (click) but it's quite pricey. Has anyone across the pond tried this yet? How does it compare to Nutella?
  4. One found this afternoon: Competitive BBQ'er Ray Lampe's "Pork Chop: 60 Recipes for Living High On the Hog" Kindle Edition $2.99US Use the "Look Inside" feature for the list of recipes. I am a US Prime member and the price you see may vary.
  5. Currently snacking on Snyder's of Hanover Pretzel pieces - Hot Buffalo Wing flavor. They're not hot at all but have a nice flavor and are addicting.

    Costco

Someone posted in another Costco discussion that their Costco stopped selling polish dogs-to-go. It looks like more Costco's are following suit: "Costco food court takes polish dogs off the menu" Note that the Costco's may still sell the polish dogs in the refrigerated section...they just won't be selling them ready-to-go. Another article mentions some new to-go items: "Costco makes food court changes: Say goodbye to the polish dog, hello to healthy options" Plant-based protein? My, doesn't that sound yummy? Don't even get me started on the Acai bowl. Like I go to the Costco food court to buy food that's healthy for me. Idiots!
  7. 8. "The New 7-11 Slurpee Is Cap’n Crunch In Drink Form" It sounds so bad it might be good....for a few sips. Edited to add: Just a reminder that Free Slurpee Day is coming soon (7/11).
  9. Buckle up, kiddos, it's a new month and there's a bunch of new ecookbooks on sale. FYI...this listing is incomplete. There were quite a number of Bargain-basement priced cookbooks and I just stopped gathering the info lest it get too unwieldy! Oh, and Spain seems to be the focus of many of the sale cookbooks...perhaps it's a new trend in the food world. Winner of the 2017 IACP Award: Literary or Historical Food Writing, Gourmand World Cookbook Award Winner: Culinary Travel - "Grape, Olive, Pig: Deep Travels Through Spain's Food Culture" Kindle Edition $1.99US Jeff Koehler's "La Paella: Deliciously Authentic Rice Dishes from Spain's Mediterranean Coast" Kindle Edition $2.99US Okay...so it's not Spain...it's a memoir plus recipes: Ann Vanderhoof's "The Spice Necklace: My Adventures in Caribbean Cooking, Eating, and Island Life" Kindle Edition $2.99US Look! eG member @rancho_gordo has a cookbook! Vanessa Barrington & eG's Steve Sando's "Heirloom Beans: Recipes from Rancho Gordo" Kindle Edition $2.99US Some BBQ cookbooks... Dan Huntley's "Extreme Barbecue: Smokin' Rigs and 100 Real Good Recipes" Kindle Edition $2.99US Use the "Look Inside" feature to see the list of recipes. Kent Rollins's "A Taste of Cowboy: Ranch Recipes and Tales from the Trail" Kindle Edition $2.99US I think this one has been on sale before: "First Prize Pies: Shoo-Fly, Candy Apple, and Other Deliciously Inventive Pies for Every Week of the Year (and More)" Kindle Edition $1.99US "The Pickled Pantry: From Apples to Zucchini, 150 Recipes for Pickles, Relishes, Chutneys & More" Kindle Edition $1.99US Time to beat the heat with a popsicle: Charity Ferreira's "Perfect Pops: The 50 Best Classic & Cool Treats" Kindle Edition $1.99US The following aren't cookbooks but are food-related: "Cork Dork: A Wine-Fueled Adventure Among the Obsessive Sommeliers, Big Bottle Hunters, and Rogue Scientists Who Taught Me to Live for Taste" Kindle Edition $1.99US Andrew Coe's "Chop Suey: A Cultural History of Chinese Food in the United States" Kindle Edition $2.99US And the reviews say this one makes a good seasonal (as in Christmas) read: "Immoveable Feast: A Paris Christmas (P.S.)" Kindle Edition $1.99US I am a US Prime member and the price you see may vary.
  10. I agree...they're just posting teases. I expect their line of Amazon tech products (Echo, Fire tablets, Kindles, etc) will be marked down quite a bit. I have an Amazon gift card that I received at Christmas that I've held back from use...saving it just for Prime Day. Prime Day can be a crap shoot, though. You have to wade through a lot of bad oysters to find the pearls. I suppose a lot of Prime members think of it as a challenge to find the good stuff. I just hope Amazon's Prime deals won't be like Costco where the unit price is good except you have to buy 10 of them to get that price. Edited to add: "Dealmaster: 4th of July sales on various gadgets and gear are underway" This article lists current deals with a lot of retailers (Best Buy, Walmart, Amazon, etc). You can find mention of many of Amazon's deals throughout the listings. **If you're on a PC computer, type Control + F to get the "Find" function and type in Amazon in the interface that appears at the top of the web page. This will allow you to step through every mention of Amazon on the web page.
  11. You're preaching to the choir. This horrid line of cookware has been mentioned before in another discussion. Corning should have been ashamed of themselves for putting out that Visions crap. It burned gravy. How in the hell do you burn gravy?
  12. A couple of bargains I found this morning: Get your tangines ready... eGullet member emeritus author Paula Wolfert's "The Food of Morocco" Kindle Edition $1.99US This next one has been on sale before but it's on sale again, so why not post it? It's Greek food this time. Erik Cosselmon's "Kokkari: Contemporary Greek Flavors" Kindle Edition $2.99US I am a US Prime member and the price you see may vary.
  13. I agree with this. Throw them in the freezer for use in the Fall or Winter...you could mash them up and use them for soup...just use a low-salt/no-salt chicken or veggie stock and then taste for seasoning along the way. A sort of Goulash comes to mind, as well.
  14. Any chance some sort of netting would prevent the feathered fiends from eating your berries?
  15. Rough Life. #FirstWorldProblem
  16. This morning's theme...Fermentation: Kirsten K. Shockey's "Fiery Ferments: 70 Stimulating Recipes for Hot Sauces, Spicy Chutneys, Kimchis with Kick, and Other Blazing Fermented Condiments" Kindle Edition $2.99US Use the "Look Inside" feature to see the list of recipes. I don't normally post "healthy" cookbooks, but Kombucha seems to be an "In" thing these days and this book seems well-reviewed... Hannah Crum's "The Big Book of Kombucha: Brewing, Flavoring, and Enjoying the Health Benefits of Fermented Tea" Kindle Edition $2.99US I am a US Prime member and the price you see may vary.
  17. @Porthos I'd seen it and thought perhaps I should have posted it, given how Anna N enjoyed the Sushi book which wasn't a cookbook. Thanks for posting the link.
  18. Two from this morning: Abigail R. Gehring's "The Little Book of Country Baking: Classic Recipes for Cakes, Cookies, Breads, and Pies (Little Red Books)" Kindle Edition $1.99US She seems to be a "homey" author judging by the other books she's written. She has a YouTube cooking show and also a cooking show on the Cooking Channel: Laura Vitale's "Laura in the Kitchen: Favorite Italian-American Recipes Made Easy" Kindle Edition $1.99US Use the "Look Inside" feature to see the list of recipes. You can even see a couple recipes from the book, as well, by using the feature.. I am a US Prime member and the price you see may vary. Edited to add two more this afternoon: New York Time's columnist Melissa Clark's "Dinner: Changing the Game" Kindle Edition $2.99US Use the "Look Inside" feature to see the many recipes in this cookbook. This has been on sale before...just posting it again: Lior Lev Sercarz's "The Spice Companion: A Guide to the World of Spices" Kindle Edition $2.99US

    Oreo Cookies

"Oreo’s New Cookie Is Better Than A Deep Fried Oreo" Has anyone found them in their area? Hopefully, someone can take one for the team and report back.
  20. Yes, it's the same with me for calamari. And when I tried escargot it was like chewing pencil erasers. I will never eat either one again. When I first arrived here to town, there was a media function for the launch of the local county fair put on by the Fair people. One of the appetizers was pickled roast beef only to find out later that it was specifically pickled tongue. It was sliced thinly and the texture was similar to thinly sliced roast beef and it did taste just like pickled roast beef. But I swore off it as I don't like to eat anything that can taste me back. Pickled tongue is a mainstay of the local Basque community and you can still get it at local Basque restaurants.

    KFC 2012–

"KFC releasing new Pickle Fried Chicken" It's a "For a limited time only" menu item that will become available to buy this Monday.
  22. Another from this morning's BookBub email and more stumbling-around discoveries: "Food52 Ice Cream and Friends: 60 Recipes and Riffs (Food52 Works)" Kindle Edition $1.99US Use the "Look Inside" feature to see the list of recipes (including savory flavors). Blogger Rachel Schultz's "Happily Homemade: Cooking with Love" Kindle Edition $1.99US Use the "Look Inside" feature to see the list of recipes. And I think this has been featured before but the price is pretty darn low - "The Sausage Cookbook Vol.1: Sausage Making Recipes [50 Fresh Sausage Recipes and 18 Cured Sausage Recipes]" Kindle Edition $.99US Use the "Look Inside" feature to see the list of recipes as well as a couple of recipes from the book (pistachio duck sausages, anyone?). I am a US Prime member and the price you see may vary.
  23. Funny you should mention this. No it hasn't happened, yet, and it might even be a week later than everyone else is predicting: "It Looks Like Amazon Accidentally Leaked When Prime Day 2018 Is" The news article mentions that the info leak came from Amazon UK and that doesn't necessarily mean Amazon US will have their Prime Day at the same time.
  24. Carl's does have biscuits (which they claim are made fresh daily) and offers a few breakfast sandwiches that are biscuit-framed. They must be nothing like what Hardee's makes because I find the Carl's biscuits to be a little "doughy" and consider them to be nothing to write home about, so to speak.

    Oreo Cookies

I passed them by, as well. Yes, I believe so. I think I am well past the age where Pop Rocks held some sort of fascination for me. Yes, I'm old...
