    Preserving tomatoes

For many of us due to our location or our physical limitations, have few other choices. Should we then not eat fresh tomatoes in season? The tomatoes in grocery stores here in Southern Ontario are not the ones that were in the grocery stores in your parents’ day. I am very fortunate in that I have a friend who visits a farmers’ market and brings me lovely tomatoes when she can. Otherwise they must be ordered online from my grocery store. You are very fortunate to have so many options for your grocery needs but please remember that abundance for one is not abundance for all.
  2. Ha ha. I think bits of ground meat make better ant representatives than raisins. It’s just a matter of scale.
  3. Not sure the “ants on a log” is the name for cheese whiz and celery. I always thought it was peanut butter on celery with raisins on top.
  4. Gabrielle Hamilton’s celery toasts I have no way of checking to be sure that this is the exact recipe but I know it is close.
  5. Thanks. It’s curious. I will be interested to hear what you think of it if you are ever able to order it! I try never to be without blue cheese in the house.
  6. A Google search suggests that a man named Liu Yang is the cheesemaker. Is this all BS?
  7. You didn’t ask me either but if soup is not your thing perhaps pickles are: Pickled celery.
  8. No chef’s knife but I have a number of the Kiwi utility and paring knives and they are amazing for the price.
  9. I’m not sure if Keller substituted something else. I will do a bit more research to see if I can find a reference.

    Beef Rib Primal

Quite a number of the bits of a cow can make an excellent burger. Only one piece can make an excellent chuck eye steak. I weep at the thought of it being ground up.
  11. I think that you can go one better! I hope I’m remembering correctly that Thomas Keller does not use celery in his mirepoix.
  12. Oh you might need more than one Mai Tai tai to cope with whatever goes on under our noses on our pocket change. “16MP Coin Microscope with Screen for Adults,”
  13. The winner deserved to win. It has much more of a surprise value than # 8. But we all know that each of us has our own sense of humour. Being from the West Midlands I have a leg up. 😂
  14. I can understand why. It is a most attractive bowl.
  15. If you read enough food safety instructions you will trip over the phrase “store away from raw meat” time and time again. It is just basic food safety and perhaps even boilerplated into the egg safety instructions.
  16. OK I just spit my drink all over my iPad. For that price they better throw in the gas station.
  17. When @Kerry Bealasked what I wanted for lunch this weekend I was ready with an answer with no hesitation. I wanted lamb chops and a salad. The perfect place to meet my needs was once again Rose in the Kitchen. Kerry had the Manti — Beef dumplings with a creamy yoghurt garlic sauce topped with mint. Gavurdagi salad — Diced tomatoes, cucumbers onions, parsley, Walnut, pomegranate sauce, olive oil and lemon juice. My lamb chops with the same salad, rice, pita, a roasted tomato and perhaps the hottest jalapeño I have had the misfortune to stumble over. We shared two desserts. It’s hard for me to put into words how good my food was today. And a long visit with Kerry didn’t hurt the situation a bit.
  18. Ah. It is still quite remarkable to me that you can have access to so many different food stuffs although I understand that some western foodstuffs are not so easily obtainable. But still it is quite remarkable that something perishable can be shipped from the other side of China when Costco will only deliver non-perishable groceries to me in a major metropolitan area. Thanks for sharing your experiences. I always find them interesting.
  19. Not something I’ve noticed showing up in my local supermarket. 😂

    Liverwurst

How did they manage to leave out the sun-dried tomatoes?
  21. Always happy to see you on the dinner thread!
  22. The plot thickens because Unilever now seems to own the rights to the Maille brand. And if you dig a little deeper there appears to be a class action against Unilever for misleading consumers into believing their product is made in France where in fact it is made in Canada. Maille mustard sold by Sainsbury’s in the UK uses the number 260 to say 260 years of expertise. This is quite the rabbit hole to fall down.
