"What was your family food culture when you were growing up? A mix of Pennsylvania Dutch from Mother's side and Southern from Dad's. Was meal time important? Yes, we had a hearty breakfast every morning before school and dinner was about 5:30, if I remember right. Was cooking important? Yes. Dad had a big appetite and food was important to him...he was the boss in our house. What were the penalties for putting elbows on the table? We were told not do that (among other things), Who cooked in the family? Only Mom...I had no interest and it was considered woman's work so nothing from Dad or brother. I didn't learn to cook until I left home and had to. Then I discovered how enjoyable it could be. Were restaurant meals common, or for special occasions? Very rare. Dad travelled often and wanted only home-cooked meals at home. Did children have a "kiddy table" when guests were over? No. When did you get that first sip of wine? At Thanksgiving and Christmas we had Manischewitz (sp?) and we children were allowed a very small glass. Was there a pre-meal prayer? Never. We did not observe any religious traditions. Was there a rotating menu (e.g., meatloaf every Thursday)? No. Mom was a good cook and was quite versatile. How much of your family culture is being replicated in your present-day family life? Much the same except now dinner is preceded by a cocktail hour and it is served much later.

Don't have the problem indoors but have had an issue with them entering through the furnace exhaust which is outside and about 8 inches above ground. Apparently they can jump. Furnace man found evidence inside my furnace of nesting materials this Fall when he came for service. A couple of years ago they had got inside the furnace and chewed some of the wiring which then had to be repaired. This time I bought a couple of these bait stations and placed them near the exhaust pipe. Within a week all the bait was gone so they seem to be working. I'll keep refilling them as needed.

I’m pretty impressed with the rotisserie attachment. It is SO easy to clean and store! it foldS down and takes little room in the d/w. And, my chicken was great and I’m planning to do another one this weekend (now that I know how to truss property). That’s a great price.

My favorite as well, however, my version has potatoes instead of the beans.

I found the non-stick grill really IS non-stick.

Do you cook much fish? If so maybe the grid would be a good idea. The cleaning tool is not a big deal to me. I think you would really LOVE having the grill.

Actually, my mother spent most of her youth in an orphanage near Allentown PA. I've heard many, many stories about life there; not so much about the food (of which apparently there was precious little) but of the horrid way the children were treated.

Further update on that cod. It turns out that my Lucy loves it. She got a Tbsp or so with breakfast and scarfed it up. Tonight she got a couple Tbsps in her food and same thing happened. I’m so glad. A good purpose for the fish and it makes my bestie happy.

I’ve no idea but it sounds a bit like borscht.

I keep seeing @mgaretz's bowl of cabbage soup. Gotta make some for me!

Update on the cod. it was pretty dried out but not stinky. I will try putting a pinch of it in Lucy’s breakfast. If she turns her nose up then it will go the way of the disposer.

I had some questionable cod in the freezer that’s been there a long time. I decided to put them in the circulator and see what happens. I cooked them for 45 minutes as they were still partially frozen. We’ll see what I get. Can’t be much of a loss whatever since I’ll at least recover some freezer space. I have a baked potato standing by along with some SVd carrots and beets. And some bakery ginger snaps picked up today at the in-store bakery. If I have to toss the cod it’s still not a big loss.

Holiday gifts. What food/drink related gifts did you get?

I order directly from See's at prices much lower than Amazon's. Not cheap still, but quality stuff. With bigger orders shipping is free. (I don't order in Summer months though because it requires insulated packages for which shipping in not free). -
Wow! Just beautiful.

I used sourdough discard. I’ve been reviving mr crock of sourdough that was hiding in the fridge for months and not looking very happy. After a few feedings over the last week it’s now nice and bubbly. Fixed the above link. Here’s the finished loaf after slicing (the Cusinart electric knife does a great job with homemade loaves). ;

Sourdough Raisin Bread is chugging along in th Zo this morning. I have made this recipe several times and it’s amazing. I don’t fuss with the filling I just add those ingredients (minus the extra egg) to the dough and it works out perfectly. I don’t bake in the machine though, I use my big oven. The best raisin bread I’v ever made.

That's the one I have. I plan to use it more regularly, now that I know where it is.

Yes! That was the place. Very nice knife.

I thought the same thing. Then I remembered that when making a big batch of devilled eggs it can be a mess when the eggs don't peel nicely. For some this could be an easy solution.
