    Your humble servant

If you went on one of the Beer Tours, you'd realize what a sedate, thoughtful bunch they tend to attract. Serious people. And I drive all day, so I dont have any beer until dinner, when it's over. ← Notice he doesn't say that he's quiet all day, just that he doesn't drink all day. LOL!
  2. Oh honey, that's nothing. Look up some of yer favorite spots in the I.D. Rat City.
  3. Oh god, how can one forget that one. For me it was "wait a half-hour after eating to go swimming... OR, you'll get cramps and sink to the bottom like a stone" Drinking out of the garden hose will give you worms. Now, a friend told me that one, as kids we ALWAYS drank out of the garden hose.
  4. I too noticed Alton obsessing over the fact that Feenie used a beurre blanc *and* a hollendaise. He thought sure they'd break before being presented to the tasters. From what I could tell, they held together pretty well, but we didn't get really close views once the tasters had them. Man, I bet he's anal. Congrats, Chef Feenie! I was really happy to see him win. (not canadian, but LOVE the Vancouver food scene...)
  5. Yes! I was told this one too! I also remember being told by a vegetarian that it takes 7 days to digest steak. LOL
  6. We always had a jersey cow on the farm for milking. The cream that would rise to the top of it was as thick as sour cream and had an incredible flavor. I used to eat it straight off with a spoon. My mother always told me (in an attempt to make me stay out of it) "that will make your insides stick together"
  7. Market Street is new, and I don't remember Nishino being on the list before... Nor Sazerac. Alas, Sazerac hasn't been the same since the original chef left.. where did he go anyway? -edit- Well now that I go up to their site, I see that Market St did participate in last fall's 25 for 25. shows what I know!
  8. I agree with you. I've eaten there probably even more than 3x, but there is something not right about the food. It just doesn't taste good, at all. No matter what I order, it all tastes bad. Which is too bad, because I think the place has a fabulous vibe.
  9. If you are gonna do Queen Anne, here's a few other ideas: The Queen Anne Cafe also does classic diner breakfasts, and their line out the door on weekends is just as long as the one at the 5-Spot. There's the little spot across the street from there that I don't know much about :-/ Its called Butterfly now or something such. No trip to Q.A. would be complete without having a chicken taco from Malena's, down across the street from Macrina's. There's a little deli/shop on the west side of Q.A. that I've not be in for awhile but I can't help but think that area of Q.A. is being neglected and a good restaurant should go in there ;-) And we have our local Chinoise location across the street from Ototo, which does a killer business. Probably the top crowd pleaser of all the restaurants on the hill, its always busy. There's an indian restaurant (Banjara) on the corner there but I've not tried it since its gotten new owners. The Thai place there is also pretty good (Orrapin).
  10. Just talked with someone at Bottleworks. They are saying mid-March for the opening of the café. Considering that December 1 was the original opening date, they are certainly making us wait a painfully long time! Permits, ya know.. blah blah. Also noted on their site: They will be hosting the 3rd annual Hard Liver Barley Wine Fest at the new café in April, the 8th to the 15th.
  11. Currently, Whole Foods 365 Raisin Bran. At $2 for a big box, it can't be beat. With a banana and 1% milk. I love cereal of all kinds. There's some other WF healthy type brands I can't quite remember, but one makes a maple raisin and a maple pecan big cluster type of granola. Really great but too expensive and too many calories! :-(
  12. Well, locally in Seattle I can only find it at Big John's PFI and Delaurenti's in the Pike Place Market. However, a quick search reveals you can order some here.
  13. One of the best country hams I've ever had was from Holloway Hams. Its a Broadbent ham that's been 'double' smoked. All you do is slice and eat and wowie. Saveur did a story on these folks a year or so ago. I've had hams from Burgers Smokehouse, Smithfield, from Kentucky and from Tennessee, hither and yon. Every year a bunch of us get together to celebrate all things Ham. We order one of these pups and make a grand feast around it.
  14. Is this in the same space Chata used to occupy?
  15. my very first job in Seattle was working the xmas season at Frederick & Nelson... I still remember late on xmas eve, closing time, some poor desparate guy scrambling to buy all his presents, rushing into F&N as we were literally locking the doors, him screaming "but.. but.. I HAVE to HAVE SOME FRANGOS! This is FREDERICK AND NELSON! its Christmas Eve!! YOU CAN'T SAY NO TO ME!! I NEED SOME FRANGOS!!!" We'd already closed all the registers. He was s*** outta luck.
  16. Ditto, ditto, and ditto. Thanks Rocky! I was STILL full this morning...
  17. Ohhhh-hh good thread. Lots of great stuff mentioned. 1. overly vinegary salad dressings. esp if its balsamic: yep, hate that. 2. fruit in salads, ok, I know some people like this, but not with an olive oil based dressing!! 3. RASPBERRY VINAGRETTE. 4. fruit in savory dishes: this one is tricky. Very few dishes successfully pull this off. I'm always leery of this. 5. regular broccoli substituted for chinese broccoli. NO! 6. mountains of whipped cream on desserts. Do NOT like this, because the whipped cream is usually overly sweet. 7. Chocolate decadence type desserts. Just bring a 80% Valhrona chocolate bar if you want it that dense.
  18. omg. um, I'd love to come to this, if I can. I'll bring some Catalan olives IF I can find some, and I'd be glad to make something- I should buy the mag. malarkey- who should probably stay at home to study that night...
  19. I got a box of Frangos for xmas and they are still in the same old green Frango box haven't opened them yet either
  20. Wow, this whole thread and no one has mentioned my fave: Mustafa's Harissa - hotter than hell but fabulous, FABULOUS flavor. I hoard jars of the stuff, because there's only a few places I can find it in town. Old El Paso Chile Company's Hell Fire and Damnation Sauce - Also great flavor profile, don't need much. For salsa, nothing beats Herdez Salsa Casera. Well, homemade could...
  21. This is a bizarre story, did you ever find out what the scoop with these people was? I would guess they were having some tough financial times if they were meagerly measuring out food like that. Kind of a sad story. either that or they were incredibly cheap. If that's the case, then I'd be extremely annoyed!

Oh my god those sound FABULOUS. Tonight we are having a selection of cheeses and charcuterie and paté and proscuitto and thai-style shrimp.. lox, mortadella, bread, crackers, and liquor, lots of it.

    Dom '96

Speaking of vintage champers... the '96 Drappier was/is a KILLER buy, (we found it at both $35 a bottle and $40 a bottle) and its a lovely, lovely champagne. Could be hard to find though. RobInAustin, I've had some Schramsberg that I thought was FABULOUS, so I'm not surprised it won a taste test. I think it was a '92..? Not sure, but outstanding stuff.
