  1. Matt's in the Market. Really great food. Great vibe. Great fun to watch them cook if you are seated at the bar. Cafe Campagne or Le Pichet for classic french bistro fare. Very tasty, great atomsphere, both places. All within walking distance of the Inn. If they are there for a weekend morning, brunch at Cafe Campagne is a winner. Or, they could consider dinner at its fancier cousin, Campagne, straight across from the Inn's front door.
  2. Where is this? Obviously near Stumptown, but where?

    SUMMER TASTING NOTES

IMHO Ephemere is THE ultimate summer beer. I can't believe you've never tried it Bob-o! Quinn: Better buy it up now, rumor has it Sleeman will discontinue that one.
  4. ohhh this is it. This is how my mother taught me to make an over easy egg. you cook it in bacon fat, and spoon the hot fat over the yolk till it turns white and then you're done. wow. Swanson's chicken pot pies! now, I haven't had one in ages, but I bet they taste crappy now. or do they....? the burnt cheese love train LOL somebody mentioned velveeta and Rotel tomatoes. That's a midwestern snack! Also, the infamous green bean casserole. its gotta have a buttload of those crunchy fried onions on top. I adore that dish.
  5. Welcome to eGullet, Speck! ....and I've told you before, get rid o' dat ting. WOOD!
  6. then she proceeds to drink him under the table. I love that scene. I love the whole scene in Babbet's Feast where she's preparing the meal. Its very sensual, but not really sexual. Tampopo of course, but that is humorous erotica really. Isn't the rose petal dish in LWFC done with quail and not chicken? The book is even better on that one.
  7. TOUGH to choose, but if I had to.... pecans.
  8. hmmm I'll have to try those. I'll admit (but don't tell anybody) that I adore frappucinos. Its the one reason I'll drop into a Starbucks. And I did just that on Saturday, when it was scorching outside. I sucked that thing down in what was probably record time.
  9. WOW thanks for this report grilledcheese. I had no idea the Still Life closed... and I'm so glad to have found where the owner/chef from Boat St. ended up. This is now on my list! Do they do breakfast??
  10. Head to Whole Foods and try out some of the offerings of Fabrique Delices and Trois Petit Cochons. The smooth pâtés 'en geleé' are of very good quality. I adore how these taste, but if you are not used to pâté, they might come on a bit rich. They have goose and duck ones, some with truffles, some with cognac, and a whole slew of "country" pâtés, which I haven't tried yet, but that's because the smooth pâtés suck me in every time.
  11. I'll second the recommend for Cafe Campagne or Campagne. There's also Le Pichet, and Matt's in the Market.
  12. Nell's website. Cafe Campagne for brunch (or lunch or dinner) the more upscale restaurant Campagne upstairs, dinner only. website for Lampreia.
  13. during the late 80's he was a Sunday afternoon regular at Sea Garden in the ID. I was a Sunday regular then too I can remember him in there ordering stuff that wasn't on the menu and it arriving at the table looking splendid. There were a few times I did ask "umm, can I get what he's getting?!" while trying NOT to point and drool. LOL
  14. I do, my fave is the green chile burger.
  15. They are more of the "pub food - diner food" variety, than fast food. Part of it for me is the Roanoke itself. I just love sitting out in their back yard soaking up some sun, kickin' back with a beer... a burger & fries are necessary in that setting!
  16. I'm going to have to decline :-( Have a fabulous time Owen, do post a follow up to your visit! Hope you get a Besalu croissant while you are here...
  17. yep, absolutely. I've always thought Daly's burgers are WAY better. But Daly's fries are uninspired. Had a great burger & fries at the Roanoke Inn on Mercer Island this holiday weekend Miss the old Green Lake Jake's for killer burgers AND fries to match.
  18. The story I heard is that it contains valerian root, an herb often used as a sedative.
  19. if there's any one thing I have a guilty pleasure about at Dick's, its the fries. Yes, greasy, sometimes (most times?) limp, they are frightening cold. But hot out of the fryer, I'll eat 'em. Damn near anytime of the day or night. But the burgers are a leave behind for me.
  20. I'll do a plug (no I don't work for him) for Jim Dixon's olive oils. He has the creme de la creme of italian oils from peppery bite to buttery soft. And IMO, the prices are reasonable. Jim Dixon's Olive Oils Another place where there is REALLY super good oil, not very cheap: Oliviers & Co on the first floor in Pacific Place.
  21. surely you can make a BETTER burger at home than Dick's. SURELY.
  22. same goes for their beer selection. I was perusing while someone else came up and said "ah yes, the most important selection of the evening..." and I said "hmm not as good as the Roosevelt store" and he said "oh but give him some time..." Now, I don't know the "him" he was refering to, so we'll see. Whoever does the beer at the Roosevelt store deserves a gold star. Its a fabulous selection.

    SUMMER TASTING NOTES

Started the holiday weekend right: Had a Manny's Pale Ale with lunch sittin' outside at the Roanoke Inn This is the first beer I've had from that brewery, and I liked it. Unfiltered, evenly balanced (IOW, for you east coast Luddites, its NOT over hopped). I'm looking forward to trying some of their other stuff.
  24. Jager is intensely flavored, sorta medicinal, but what I like about it is how it makes me feel. I can feel my entire body relax after a glass or two. Its theraputic
