does anyone know this bean? I was given two plants told they are "Italian" and "rare" .flowers attract bees, butterflies and hummingbirds and they have been flowering and producing (three sisters bed beans) all summer ..still going strong! they are the best bean I think I have ever grown ..wonderful flavor super tender and can not wait to try some dried I hope someone knows I would love to have a name for this? I think I am done with the garden ..then it is not done with me I so enjoy everyones photos and stories and the spider! I love spiders but they creep me out when the webs crunch on me in the garden this time of year ..then worse when you can not find it and are sure it is in your hair and no one is around to look ..that happens!

ok last night I did better and cooked a sort of dinner out doors .(now obviously can post photos not sure why I made that so hard ) YUM YUM katsu chicken fried it on the camp stove with rice, (not shown it looks like rice) kimchi and a really nice tart plum sauce ( fish sauce and thai bird chiles into the nice tart plum jam I made from the incredible harvest this year!) I will be playing with this jam and all the plums I dried all winter long / kitchen is gutted finally!!!! I may have it done for the holidays! please please send me good vibes I am so tired of living in a state disarray … this has been an excessively long journey ..yesterday ..everything off the walls..I painted the ceiling and scrubbed/prepped the cabinets for painting …this week we are pouring the countertops I am so excited! but still not sure of the color ..ok I am not sure of anything and really feeling overwhelmed and a bit screamy right now ..but whatever ..this has been a decade and a half of living in a constant DIY remodel and moving stuff around while life happened anyway ..my kitchen is in the living room and down the hallways now and I can not find a thing so any meals I cook are are some kind of challenge now (I know no one cares really about this but where else but in a dinner thread can I bitch about how I cooked the meal around a disaster area that has consumed a huge chunk of our lives here ) there is not a single piece of chicken left in the fridge….the fridge that is now sitting in the living room ..my "kitchen" is everywhere now even under the bed …kind of claustrophobic to be honest

It may not seem like much and sorry about the paper plates … but I made these rolls on the grill and they came put perfectly …the concord grape jelly I made last week from a record harvest ..and did it with a propane burner out doors so this bun with butter and cheddar and grape jelly? a complete feast to me today! (DIY kitchen remodel in progress) these roles are my go to ..my kids used to call them "clam buns" because they always looked like clams when we filled them I guess? / I ate too early I think I need another one!

I tried a gyro and can not get the nightmare out of my mouth ..i think it is bitter horrible and why i thought it would be good is beyond me No way no how even the idea is horrible. My husband ate the bag and said they are " fine"

cut it all back to the first set of leaves loosen the roots and and put it where you have it with lots of light then pretend that is how life is and it will grow I do it every year and harvest it all winter ..the leaves do get smaller and as time goes by it looses it flavor ..but most years I have either cuttings rooted from the stuff I cut or the plant to put back out in the springtime

Omg i love triscuits with sharp Tillamook and fresh jam! It is my go to comfort snack ..( lately something is different with Tillamook there is a new bitter taste from the bacteria, i can taste it and am hoping it goes away ) I will try the TJ s then! I know you can take them back but i feel like this is mostly me being bitchy now My friends shrink told her and she told me...." It is only bugging you ? It is you!" I think wth some foods, it really is me I taste too many flavors in life and it is not always a good thing

So i only buy raw nuts and Dr Bronners peppermint shampoo at TJs ..ever ...anymore i find the food so disapointing and can " do it myself " cheaper. I tried again and on a nut run bought some snacks Gorgonzola crackers ( i think it was supposed to be a cheeze it type? ) have no gorgonzola flavor and taste like old forgotten crackers Fig bars? Wow they were dry and stale tasting ..very chokey with out milk! and the fig paste was flat tasting My grankids who love cookies of all kinds thumbs down it and fed them to the chickens finally the Stone ground wheat crackers? Well i put some really nice home made mushroom pate on top took a bit and they did not grind them enough or added stones to them..because the crunchy wheat that is supposed to impart a stoney wheat goodness? Tastes like crackers with rocks.... I am so sad ! I want to love TJs again! I did when they first came to Federal Way WA a long long time ago i worked at a clinic close enough to walk and would get a really nice tabouli salad or somethind semi fresh there...now i am walking away bummed Except nuts! They still have me in there four times a year for a cart full of nuts.... ( ok ..That sounds hysterical that sentence out loud!) I love crackers and am always trying new ones, bummed at options lately. I dont understand why? Ok i have procrastinated ...now it is time to do the last bit of deconstruction of the kitchen ..it will be truly useless after today...the point of no return. I was reading this thread looking for snacks ...that pizza Rotuts made looks great! I have never had anything from TJs end up like that!

ok this is a test and my first photo of my garden this is my boy muskovy duck /he is alone because he is an asshole and no one wants to hang out with him right now it is a very delicious duck ..my favorite meat actually is Muskovy I keep reminding him of this fact they are all turned loose in the garden right now (8 ducks and 13 chickens I thought one chicken was dead and it came back after a month well fed and happy ) they will eat everything including the bugs and slugs and give me (all but the muskies they are seasonal layers and really are our meat ducks) the other ducks give sometimes two eggs a day the chickens lay all over the neighborhood I gave up they are feeding everyone now I have a flicker sight I started a couple of years ago and now feel even sillier I guess you can see some of the garden here if you like ? https://www.flickr.com/gp/77351416@N04/6hKD7j I put the photos I ran out and took today in an album of the summer ..I can not believe how difficult I made this all seem ..everything is so green now and there are no captions ..I kept things individually watered but we finally had rain this past week and everything behind my garden became green again …crazy weather

should I try to post a photo of the spot I have to put this in ? I have to have a solid microwave and I need a great oven ..just one not two anymore I have a super tiny kitchen and not a huge budget ..ok my budget is imaginary ( I just keep waiting/saving to buy things when I can buy them that is my budget) also I am not tied to any color ..I am not a fan of stainless but that is all I can find anymore ??? I am going to finish gutting the kitchen tomorrow and friday and next week the countertops are being poured ..there is a light I see it!!!! shit this has been a 10 year project we remodeled and live in this house room by room every door window everything had to be created over …I am now following the light to doneness and my own kitchen ..so help me choose a nice oven ..I do love convection as an option …and once I figured out how to use it ..I had killed the previous ovens (ok I tried and no photo today my brain exploded)

radish kimchi now i have jars of Korean cucumber and radish along with the tops kimchi… I love the smell!!! no one else in my house does! I think this is the last thing I have buckets of tomatillos and plan to give those away I am freaking done (I keep saying that ..I have not harvested the pumpkins popcorn and some kind of supposedly rare Italian bean I have never heard of of known of but it looks like a great big white lima to me ..those things will be dried including the pumpkin I dry it in strips in the dehydrator nothing amazing but it great in curry and soup This is my first year growing popcorn. I have a lot of ears that look like they have corns in them? I opened one and it was pink and white ..the rest should look as good I would think ..I hope I hope! I can post photos now apparently I will try to insert something in the next post can you believe it is time to prep the beds to plant garlic next month? I am late actually and doing it today after I finish making the kimchi… holy shit where does time go ???? planting garlic and fava beans means the summer harvest is over …wow I am definitely planning this kitchen with the thought of food preservation ..I spend 2/3rds of my year doing it in some form or another that is for sure. -
Oh god i saw you asked me something Rotuts and i need a ritalin to catch up and answer...wow. There are so many posts already is there a controversy brewing? Kidding i will read. if it was already amswered? Sorry I am way over my head in this house and garden now.

I have steamed and canned 3 gallons of concord grape juice and guess I will continue because I can not think of another damn thing to do with them now ..I can use the juice later if I want to make jelly and the little grandkids like to drink it so I guess that is it ..unless anyone has any good ideas for concord grapes..the juice is magnificent this year the drought did them good. One more harvest next week and I am done with them but if anyone has suggestions aside from freezing them (no room this year) I am open ..I made grape leather and juice and am eating them ..what else? I can make ketchup I guess? -
HAHAHAHAHA! I bought a plastic box with a vent called FASTA PASTA!!!! Just because you guys talked about it !!! and you know what? it not only makes perfect pasta…shut the door good…. it makes freaking Korean style rice perfectly! and Korean porridge in like 20 min? what??????? seriously this is so incredibly crazy this thing works I had to come back and say something I could not feed a family or friends …with this thing (still need the big pot of water on the stove for that) … but for two of us? shocked and bemused! the damn thing works perfectly .. in the mean time i need to stop buying things and get my kitchen done thanks

OH I AM SO OVERWHELMED!!! just looking at the kitchen gives me migraines! we stuck the cooktop into the counter (the new one is not done and forget rushing "artists" ) so my new cooktop out of desperation and need is sitting on spacers in my old countertop ..but I can cook now !!! good grief … I want everything but am old and retired now so my income is truly limited Alex thank you so very much for the advice on how to save! I am going to look more and find the right oven for the right price ..and you are right I think I can do better on the price ..(I live on the Puget Sound ) maybe I need a steam oven? Smitty!!! omg that is what I need… I have to admit to you now and then run..I broke the previous two ovens lining them with tiles cranking them up full blast and throwing water in to steam sourdough ..I have calmed down now …and will not do what I did to a new oven again ..and am building a bread oven in the yard … thank you so very much for the response

Please merge if needed, I found several topics on wall ovens but they were all very old and some were barely touches so while I am thinking there must be a more detailed thread I can not seem to find it for me this is a HUGE purchase and it will be my LAST oven. I burned up a double Kitchenaid ..this was not all the oven's fault (but I was not thrilled with it ever it was not a great oven to work with and from day one I was disappointed but it was all I could afford and on sale at the time…. Now I am so much better with appliances… I am over my destruction of ovens by trying to get them to do things they are not supposed to … only one oven works and it only works at 350F no convection and it is a fire hazard so I try to only bake when I have to right now ….(I destroyed both ovens in 7 years and should be embarrassed but I learned SO much during this crazy process I do not regret it at all it was fun) Prior to that I had some old second hand pieces of crap.. it was my first "good" and new oven" .. . So while doing our remodel this is the largest expenditure for me for sure. So I want a good oven with a good warrantee that is actuate and will handle heavy use but not the previous abuse ..I also want to buy my LAST oven now http://www.lowes.com/pd_472492-39047-HBL8751UC_1z0ynxcZ1z140vc__?productId=50160145&pl=1#BVRRWidgetID I had my heart set on an Electrolux that has been D/c'd now and I am not going to spend anymore time trying to track one down. I found one and it was so much more expensive than the one I chose forget it. so really now I am looking at the Bosch and wonder what you folks think of this model please it is a huge amount of money for me to spend and honestly if there is a comparable oven that I am overlooking I would appreciate the guidance ..I wanted that Electrolux and should have bought it and held it because found one at a discount ..argh I need help in this choice ..we do have a discount at Lowes so that should help …if anyone would not mind reviewing this and letting me know what you think and if you have other suggestions I am very "open" right now and have a month to make the choice …(my husband and his colleague are pouring the counter tops so I already replaced our sink and cooktop …just have to make this one last stomach churning choice ..I want to puke over this ..but I hate making choices like this anyway and always make myself hurl … if I can "do better" please let me know and thanks so much in advance for a merge or a comment

that WOULD have been EXACTLY what I would have said before my stove blew up …ut currently I do not have a stove and am in a holding pattern on the kitchen remodel because the counters need to be poured … so this may solve a ton of issues with pasta for me ..however it is also more "things" I may not use later unless I love it ….so for $14 I think I just spent more money because I read an egullet thread LOL! just not sure Like Rotuts if I should go with the bowl or the fasta ..I think the fasta ..no the bowl ..no the fasta …OY!!!! HEIDI!!!! STOP AND JUST PUSH THE BUTTON TO BUY NOW!!!LOL not yelling at other "Heidi's..(my name is also Heidi…we have a few here some folks know that I guess or maybe not? ) ok I am buying the Fasta ..I make noodles all the time and Angie got me on the homemade pasta thing ..if we are not eating rice we eat noodles and it has been a huge pain in the ass making pasta on a camping stove so we miss it …I bet it is good with ramen noodles as well….. NO low carb or gluten free at my house obviously, we eat a high carb based diet with lots of vegetables ..…so anything that makes getting carbs to the table in a more simple manner is tugging at me right now …something has to go before I can order this and I am not sure what ..that is my self contract I do not buy "new" for the kitchen unless it is permanent or I give something away to make up for the space ….ok the FASTA ..hitting the button and I will give away the zucchini noodle thing that bought on impulse thinking because I love zukes I would love it as noodles …conclusion I really like zucchini on top of my pasta not AS the pasta. out the door with Zoodles and in with a pasta maker for the microwave…my "new" pending oven has a top microwave so I will maybe like this so much it will be the way I make pasta for husband and I from now on ..who knows right? also good for the grandkids to make noodles when they come over as they are masters of the microwave and no all the safety rules..did I need to think this out in narrative on Egullet ..I guess so …have a good day .."buy it now" and I can not come back for a week because every time I do I buy something.

Anna that was just the calrose LOLOL I did not even write about the jasmine! I would never scrub the jasmine like I do the calrose but otherwise I guess it is similar ..no scrubbing jasmine but I use the knuckle method once and measured according to the bag on the first ..the water ratio is different on a bag of jasmine vs calrose …but the knuckle is the same size on all my rice and I use first knuckle measure for all rice I put on the stove that I have rinsed and or soaked ..dry rice a different story in the pot it was all a failure with both rices though on the stove I boil jasmine hard until almost all the water is gone and the rice is poking out of the water …and there are divots in the rice …like little caldrons … then put the lid on with a tea towel to catch the water ..15 min on low heat then push it off for " a while" to settle ..perfect rice every time
-
Thanks you both. Look forward to replies Deryn let me see First time i followed the instructions " rinse lightly drain, 2 cups rice to 2 1/2 cups pushed the rice button It was mushy Second time I did it the way I cook it daily... .pearled the rice ..(I think that is what you call it?) put a little water and scrub it, then drain 3 times ...Leave some starch...then added to my first knuckle of water ...perfect everytime on the stove, ..pushed the rice button walked away ..but in the pot it was paste The other two times i variations of above venting early at the beginning on one ( i leave the top off my rice until it is boiling a bit so thought maybe it needed that? and then at the end .....both times terrible. Used two cups of rice each time Gave up I always toast basmati in lots of butter so it came out perfectly in the pot I use ...US grown medium " fancy" blue bag ..CHUN HA IL MI ...excellent calrose btw

I know where I fail with this pot and maybe you can help if you wanted to ..or maybe you already have and I do not see it if you tried white rice (Korean style is what I eat mostly) yet or not ? did you ? if you have made rice would you mind pointing me to it? You are up to 5 pages and I am unable keep up currently. But am thrilled with the conversation I have read that is for sure how fun this is I have put four pots of cal rose medium in that pot and ended up tossing it to the chickens and ducks before I gave up ..same with the jasmine rice ..I use the medium grain Calrose to make Korean style rice almost daily and have to use a pot on a hot plate burner because I can not get it to come out correctly in the Instant pot …I have to clarify I have NEVER been able to get any rice to come out in a rice cooker anyway so this is nothing new to me…but maybe now if you try it and give an outline of you process..I can do it? I would love to because I have to watch the burner it is so dangerous …and the pot I can leave .. ..that and jasmine have both been tossed to the chickens and ducks because I could not figure it out ..and I would love to be able to make it in there ..I can make pilaf and even made a nice pot of Persian rice with the crust on the bottom ..but not plain rice if you have not tried would you please give it a try ? Let us know how you did ? ..again if you did already and I missed it I appologize just point … I spun through the thread and did not see it ….and was blown away there is so much i have to come back if I ever get that elusive thing called "time" and go through it again …but in the meant time ..fi you did and would point me I would be grateful thanks. I have a pot of pinto beans on now ..they come out perfect every time in there …I can say I rarely do NOT used this thing and after hitting it with about 10 cook downs of tomatoes to paste ? I adore my pot glad you got one! why not life is way too short to not have something fun and very functional in the kitchen

What Are You Preserving, and How Are You Doing It? (2006 - 2016)
hummingbirdkiss replied to a topic in Cooking
ok at the end of my harvest since I closed my winter beds due to drought (we had some rain the past few days but it all "rolled off" ) I am now using my dehydrator full force and making vegan raw crackers..they are not the best things in the world I need more practice and apparently better recipes ..but last night I was making soup and put some in there figuring they were just soup ingredients dried anyway …and then I looked online I and I guess this is a "thing"…so I am just smashing the first few batches to fortify other dishes and now I am feeling very virtuous! I wish i liked the raw crackers more ..but will keep trying as making them in the dehydrator is so easy! ..my husband said "they would be good if you deep fried them now " he is right they taste ..welll RAW LOL!!! I am letting whatever else is in the garden go to wildlife, chickens and ducks now ..I am done with this years harvest and going to just sit back and enjoy what is left of summer. pumpkins were really prolific those I do not pick until the plants die back so nothing better eat those I put chicken wire over them
