And while not apparently anyone's complaint here, there is also the time when you were a child, ate something, became violently ill (which may or may not have been the food's fault) and have never eaten it since, due to the power of the negative memory. Don't almost all of us harbor at least one of those? Reese's Cups....BARF! -

Great references huiray. My own experience with cilantro includes both soapy taste in the leaves and stinkbug taste in the frilly dill-like foliage that grows as the plant is going to seed. Elsewhere on eG cilantro lovers have described the taste as slightly minty and fresh...which is foreign to me. -

I have to believe that there are spices /flavor profiles (I hate that expression) that are disliked by large numbers of people. The Great Curry Debate points to one cuisine that is not universally enjoyed. The absence of Indian chain restaurants might be considered confirmation that at least in the US, Indian flavors aren't appreciated. -

I participated in a series of posts similar to the current curry issue, except regarding Mexican food. The arguments were basically identical. Either "How can you dislike it all when the cuisine is so diverse?" or "You haven't had the really good stuff". My response was in essence I've been trying to like it for decades and just don't based on extensive experience. Not sure how to resolve these two positions. -
I'm with you. She is loud, boorish, dumb-looking, says stupid things, cooks what looks like crap. What's the appeal? This demonstrates that much of the invective directed towards Paula Deen has much more to do with who she is then what she did. People need to know their place. Ms. Deen was to uppity for those of us with much higher intellect and much better taste. She should have been happy to sell sandwiches on the street Of all the fucking nerve. Go get a job at Wal Mart. None of us important people of high culture would dream about going there You have read an awful lot into my saying that I don't see her appeal. I think that she's been treated unfairly even though I don't agree with what she said/did or like her product.

Ahem. I was addressing one aspect if this issue with an entirely apt analogy. A worker's product is property of the employer. If this woman was asked to develop recipes the employer would own them.

I think there are multiple causes. Big chains...low profitability of mom and pop places...people move around much more for work etc and bring their food preferences with them...parents cook less than before

I hate it when they spot one diner who is done early and whisk the plate away. RUDE.

I have the CDN...$16 at amazon. Works great, reads fast and accurate, cheap. Better by lots than the Taylor probes which are SLOW. NSF likes it. http://www.amazon.com/CDN-DTQ450X-ProAccurate-Quick-Read-Thermometer/dp/B0021AEAG2/ref=sr_1_5?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1375299457&sr=1-5&keywords=probe+thermometer

Talk to any employee of a big company. They work hard, get paid, company gets the fruit of their labors. What's the big deal?

Agreed. Screwing around after I've asked for the check drives me crazy. Get the check, bring it quickly.

I hate raisins, especially when they are hiding in some delicious dish. Its like finding a cockroach in your salad or a rabbit turd in your arrancini.

Mind = blown. Not liking authentic Mexican food is one thing, personal preference and all that... but "Taco Bell is better"? Taco Belch isn't all that Mexican, I'm told. More Southwestern...tuned to yankee tastes. -
Lol. Tastykakes rule. Hostess is for people who like Papa Johns pizza.

Curry is just OK. Refried beans are lost on me. Cilantro tastes like soap, or if really fresh like stink bug. In fact most Mexican food isn't great to me. Taco Bell is better than authentic stuff and TB pretty much sucks. Southwestern cuisine is much better to me than Mexican. -
Interesting piece in FoodArts on the disappearing regional cuisine of the Mid-Atlantic. Doubtless it also applies to other areas. The big chain restaurants are homogenizing our national tastebuds. http://www.foodarts.com/news/features/27047/losing-ourselves

Oranges and GMOs and Florida and the OJ Industry
gfweb replied to a topic in Food Traditions & Culture
If the orange trees are all derived from grafts they are probably very similar if not identical. This old form of cloning guarantees consistent fruit, but decreases the seed-driven genetic diversity in which a resistant tree can arise. -
Oranges and GMOs and Florida and the OJ Industry
gfweb replied to a topic in Food Traditions & Culture
For me there are three GMO issues that are a concern. First the potential for unanticipated ecological mischief (eg BT corn pollen killing butterflies). Second the behavior of overzealous corporate lawyers who sue the pants off of innocent farmers who are unlucky enough to have GMO pollen drift onto their field and fertilize their plants. Third, the irrational, fear-mongering that goes on from those who virulently oppose GMO anything no matter what the potential benefit. Of these, only #2 is solvable. Either the companies could tell their lawyers to back off and not pursue obviously unfair cases or congress could step in and establish ground rules. #1 can never be fully assured. A similar situation exists with drug approval. You don't know a new drug is really safe for a few years. -
Part of the problem is that many don't understand what an allergy actually is. As in "I'm allergic to cigarette smoke"

I find the preheating instructions to be fine, with the exception of the convection preheating stopping short of the desired temp (as well described by Anna above).
