    Steven Shaw

I had never heard of him but he was in Des Moines, Iowa for something and the paper ran an article on him and mentioned eGullet. I was so intrigued that I came here, loved what I saw and joined as quickly as I could. Never been sorry. He was a unique voice in the food world and a one-of-a kind person. I also thank you for posting this.
  2. He can scamper wearing Crocs? I'm impressed with his talent! And also his ability to identify fruit.
  3. That's true. These owners, three brothers own 7 or 8 other smallish stores around the state as well in a couple surrounding states. Just have to watch and see
  4. We were at the local market at 7 a.m. today. Second customers in. First time I have seen cartons and cartons of eggs but the produce, except for green onions and mini peppers, was skimpy. I snagged the last cuke but it was no prize. When we went through the check-out, i told the checker that she was the first person, other than my husband, I had spoken face to face within 10 days. BTW, no t.p. to be had. But my wine was there so it was a pretty good trip. I did notice that prices of everything have been creeping upward the last couple of visits. The store holds a pretty large captive group of shoppers Myself included for now. I think they will rue the day they did that once we can make choices again. I found a lone package of T.Js tamales in the freezer along with the dregs of a box of tacquitos. Lunch will be built around that stuff and then I can justify my siesta.

    Rabbit

I hope you heartless people at least wait until the bunny has delivered his Easter goodies. Next you will be posting how you ate Rudolph the Reindeer on Christmas Eve! Where will it end?😜
  6. Great excuse to make 40 clove garlic chicken (several times).
  7. Oh yes, Helms Bakery trucks. You had a placard with a big letter H on it that put you in the window to let the driver know you wanted him to stop. Had the best gooseberry pie ever made on earth. Went on a field trip to the bakery in grade school and got "drunk"on the smell of baking bread. Never been the same since! And, back to the wheel. In my memory it included more than just milk products. Wasn't there orange juice and eggs on it as well? Not sure about the eggs though.
  8. Yes we too had one of those wheels. It was from Edgemar Dairy based in Santa Monica, CA. It had a different color for every product. They also sold compost by the load at the dairy itself. We rented a trailer and picked up a load more than once. The mushroom farm in Oxnard used the stuff by the ton too.

    Dinner 2020

I almost think I could eat dirt out of those beautiful dishes and serving pieces. 'Even my half-assed cooking would shine and that's saying a lot. I always try to "read" them like hieroglyphics. The bowl in the last picture say "Eat this, it will blow your mind". Am I close?

    Dinner 2020

Me too Anna. Let's go some where and pig out on corn in many forms.

    Breakfast 2020!

And green bell peppers too. I can almost feel a certain someone shuddering from here! Wow, lots of like-minded people here!
  12. One of my kids gifted me with a one year Bacon of the Month membership from Zingerman's a couple of years ago for my birthday. That was some expensive pig meat but fun to explore.

    Breakfast 2020!

That lovely serving board would make a blob of canned dog food look tasty. Isn't their work just stunning? Ann and Mo are true artists.
  14. Hi Steve, hey aren't you Diana's kid? Oh and Welcome this is a fantastic place.
  15. Why do I associate hot cross buns with Easter? Eons ago I used to make mini cinnamon rolls and arrange them to look like a lamb. When they rose and baked, they looked a little like a wooley critter. Or at least the kids thought so! You could make oval sugar cookies and decorate them like Easter Eggs.
  16. But what did you think "lived" in all those millions of red, heart-shaped boxes?
  17. Many of the nicer stores in Mexico that cater to tourists greet them at the door with an open beer. Nice little touch I think!
  18. Boy this shopping thing works both ways. When we were building this house. hubby would send me to the hardware store for various odds and ends. More than once, hell, lots of times I came home with the wrong thing. Nails a wee bit short. screws with a slotted head, too wide a paint brush, you name it. We finally worked out a solution. Give me an example of the nail, screw nut or bolt to show the clerk. If it were something really super complicated, he called ahead and explained it to the staff and they would have it ready for me to pick up. By the time the house was finished, I had earned a degree in "Hardware Store Shopping" and had my own nail apron so to speak. I can butter bricks with the best of 'em! I think I knew I had mastered it when he sent me to the local Redi-Mix place to pick up screeds and floats and I knew exactly what he meant.

Hum old Chinese stand-by.... orzo he sez!
  20. I'm thinking that cooking in the nude might offer a great weight loss program around here. Anyone catching even a small glimpse of me at the stove in that condition, would immediately lose their appetite!

    Superbowl food 2020

I have never, ever seen Irish stew on any menu nor eaten it at anyone's house. I think the pollster was nearing a deadline and just drew something out of a hat. I would like to see the numbers behind that one.

Have you had a change to try tacos al pastor yet? They are my all time favorite kind.

    Superbowl food 2020

Plan to watch the Puppy Bowl and ask my hubby "Whose a good girl?" Might make some puppy chow😆 I haven't willingly watched a football game since I was in high school and never mind how long ago that was! Come on baseball season....
  24. Mix the natural peanut butter with some oatmeal and cornmeal. Roll int o balls or make small patties and put them out for the birds. Ours love that kind of stuff. We have a log with holes drilled in it and we stuff the mixture in the holes. The birds put on a real show as they work to get the stuff out. In a pinch, you can just smear it directly on to tree trunks.
