  1. Bumping this up as we are into our second heat wave of the month. I do NOT do well in heat so have reverted to the foodways of my youth - especially since we do not have air conditioning. Up very early and do most all of my food prep by 7 am. Cook pasta or potatoes that will become cold salads ... there is an Asian salad with noodles, peppers, carrots and shrimp for Johnnybird's linner(late lunch / first dinner) and a potato and green bean salad with a nice vinaigrette. Picked up some old fashioned iceberg lettuce to make lettuce wraps with some chicken that I had poached earlier. That gave me a twofer - the poached chicken for the lettuce wraps and quesadillas as well as strengthening poaching liquid I had in the freezer. The main thing in the fridge right now are 2 liter containers of cold brewed tea, I liter container of lemongrass simple syrup, 1 liter of cold brewed coffee and some of that faux V8 juice ElainaA mentions in Shelby's blog s well as our honking big water Brita. Need my hydration!
  2. Ronnie has wanted me to make pickled eggs for a looooooong time. I've had one that was store bought. I really didn't like it. Strong vinegar taste and....rubbery. Maybe I'll like these better? I've been saving some eggs from my girl down the road so that they wouldn't be so fresh and hard to peel. They were still hard to peel I find shelling peas relaxing. I find shelling eggs to be an activity that makes me want to hurl the eggs out the window. P8140507.JPG Exactly why I do purchase some eggs at the grocery...usually half a dozen.
  3. Andre?!!!! come on..........Please upgrade to at least Cook's The peach pit jelly is awesome.
  4. Make peach kuchen!!! OK does your Chum look like the guy on TV's Pawn Stars?
  5. AAARRRGGGGHHHHHHH....NO GREEN BEANS!!!!!! this is exactly what our still room looked like.
  6. I was incorporated into the fold by way of being on a message board here in New Jersey with Rosie, Jason, Rachel, Curlz and a few others back in early September 2001. This was a lifeline for me within the next few weeks and I have met some wonderful folk including some who grew up near me, went to school near me, shares a birthday and I can't wait to visit now that both Johnnybird and I are retired....just to put you on notice Shelby, Smithy and Melissa......
  7. Yeah!!!!!!! Canning is one thing I have never been able to get myself to do. Probably because I was traumatized by my grandmother's green beans exploding when I was a wee girl. Any chance of more game photos, too?
  8. just watching Chef Staib's visit home to the Black Forest in Germany. The maultashen is so like the way I was taught though the kataffel salat wasn't like Grandma Rose made hers. It is similar to one that I had copied out from a book several years ago and John really liked it. Black Forest cake .... not so much
  9. Checking out the local farms and found some basil and at least 5 different types of tomatoes so decided to dust off the pasta machine and make pasta with a walnut basil pesto that went with a tomato salad. Johnnybird scarfed it up! Next up this week something with the Saturn peaches and definitely a tomato pie.
  10. Having grown up on a small island add in the fact that the shipping costs by ferry can be very expensive. We had an IGA and I do believe that we were last on the line that covered eastern Long Island and the truck came over from CT.
  11. Do you have access to print or online magazines? The current July/August Eating Well has a spread that includes a blueberry and lobster salad, grilled chicken with a blueberry lime salsa and grilled haloumi with a blueberry balsamic jam. If not I might be able to pm anything that looks interesting to you.
  12. Simple summer dinner: Jucy Lucy, sweet hot pickles and red onion on a toasted bun with a potato and green bean salad dressed with Cain's mayo mixed with an Italian vinaigrette. Watermelon with a mint and lemongrass gastrique.
  13. GOOD, sweet fresh peaches have arrived here in NW NJ. I also have some blueberries from south Jersey and some wild raspberries that have volunteered in the yard this year. To start out I have a peach and blueberries kucken in the oven. Tossed the fresh fruit with some toast dope and flour and dropped the amount of sugar in the base recipe. I'm going to make an old fashioned - well at least to my family - fruit steamed pudding with the raspberries and the last peach for dinner. Hard sauce to go on top of it. Found an interesting recipe for sweet cornmeal muffins with blueberries from Donna Bell's Bakery book.
  14. As always THANK YOU two...can't wait until the fall.
  15. Just in the grocery store this afternoon and a couple were commenting on the flavors. The only one that looked interesting was the truffle fries .....
  16. made some chicken quesedillas with roasted diced chicken breasts, some finely shredded queso and drained pico de gallo. served with some fresh green beans ( 1.00 per bag from a local guy) that were roasted with sea salt, garlic, minced tomato and olive oil. leftovers for me tonight.... good tomatoes are just coming in....I want tomato pie
  17. YES!! Furthest east you can get this is Syracuse ... unless you make it yourself like I do.
  18. BUMP Johnnybird and I are going on our first cruise this coming January out of New York into the eastern Caribbean. Love the info here and any new hints y'all might have would be appreciated. The only thing that looks interesting is that Geoffrey Zakarian has 3 eating spaces that he consults on on the vessel. Other than that I could not care less about the food ... I think.
  19. But ... but ... baked beans and brown bread are Saturday night supper!! And did you put raisins or dates in your brown bread? Inquiring minds want to know.
  20. I too am a Miracle Whip girl and can not abide the taste of Hellmann's but have discovered Cain's. It is ethereal though available in a limited geographic area.
  21. Check the baking aisle as well as the cookie aisle.,,that's where they hide down here.
  22. Love it ......though "skull f*cked by a walrus" with Rhulman on here is a classic. Sorry I left the east end before meeting Mrs. Garten. She seems like someone who is real.
  23. Is she talking about time or food...... I also prefer savory foods for breakfast. I have a problem in that if I go more than say 45 minutes after I am hungry; I lose my appetite and don't want to eat at all. I try to stay hydrated at all times. I don't like to eat much later than 6 or 7 pm now - used to be 4 to 5 when I was working. I feel weighed down and lethargic. I know I'm odd.
  24. sorry... I was off after I posted this to do stuff for the day. No. I find mini, medium and large sized liners.
  25. Liners come in several sizes,,,I get my mini liners either at the grocery store, a restaurant supply house or online.
