  1. so.... will we see in the fall edition id the SV took?
  2. and give me the green squash and mac and cheese, please
  3. Have a blast, all!! Now John is retired we are exploring co-housing(I love it - John not so much) who knows????
  4. Haven't had time to catch up with the wonderful food.... recently made a shrimp with jeweled vegetables and served it over rice .... steamed broccoli florets, carrots and snow peas. as requested pasta with roasted vegetables and chicken. unfortunately Johnnybird seems to have now developed a gluten intolerance so about anything he likes (pizza...pasta...bread...French toast...pancakes) now gives him a horrible time. I had to learn to cook lactose free a few years ago and now a new challenge.... including no corn, rice or fibrous vegetables.......... last night was a salmon with very soft veg and rice noodle salad any ideas please pm me for tonight John is going with a friend to see Paul McCartney. About 4 pm dinner for them: bison burgers(bun for the friend and naked for John), potato salad with peas and scallions, green salad for his friend and me. Snack for after the concert will be a small container of fresh peanut butter for protein then some potato chips( he doesn't like a peanut sauce on noodles). The best I can do till I can get to the library for books and the grocery for what I can find....
  5. As my grandmother used to say "sometimes you have the lyrics....sometimes you have the tune BUT sometimes the lyrics and tune come together" (explaining why she did NOT approve of "bad language" unless in exceptional situations - like the time a police officer pulled her over at 1130 pm in 1952 when she "ran" a red light after sitting at it for over 5 minutes with absolutely NO traffic either way in Southampton NY....my grandfather just sat there and somehow didn't laugh)
  6. One of John's cousins is visiting from Texas and the immediate cousins want to get together before she goes home. Looks like it will be about 12 adults and 7 or 8 children next Saturday. We usually get a chance to visit with another cousin on the Saturday after Thanksgiving for the Christmas parade in Pine Plains NY now we are going to get a chance to hang with them in the summer. There are a few things that I need to be respectful of - gluten free, lactose free and low or no sugar. So far here is the menu I have come up with: guacamole hummus pita chips(the gluten free folks can skip this) carrots pepper strips - red, yellow and orange non gluten chips stuffed eggs - no mustard so not deviled baked chicken drummers baked ziti made with gluten free pasta and chicken sausages potato salad green salad Jersey corn baked beans fruit salad featuring local Jersey peaches, hand picked wineberries and a basil honey white balsamic sauce
  7. This is originally how the food blogs started all so many years ago ... before we had picture capability.
  8. Out checking bluebird boxes yesterday and the wine berries were ready to pick! Got about a pint from half a set of bushes. More to pick later this week. So far I am going to mix these with some almost over ripe peaches and put them over some ice cream or yoghurt. I think I'll use the one I pick later to make steamed puddings like we did when I was a kid: make a batter, fold in the fruit, grease a bunch of coffee mugs, fill and place in a big pot with water 2/3 of the way up the mugs. Steam while eating dinner. Make a hard sauce and burn your fingers trying to get the hot pudding out of the mugs. But that steaming pudding with the sauce melting into the cracks and crevices was so........yummy.
  9. A small amount of roasted chicken breast to use up so chopped it up and added it to some minced red onion, chopped walnuts, chopped dried cranberries, celery salt, a little bit of coleslaw dressing and some Cain's mayo. Roll up in a lightly heated whole wheat tortilla.
  10. Real American Food page 245. This is the book my mom gave me that had the recipe for beef on weck, weck rolls, speidies and Cinncinatti chili
  11. Jane and Michael Stern have a good recipe in their Real Food book....really close to what we get at the diner
  12. what is this hamburger you speak of my sister? it does have ground beef in it.......
  13. In Northwest New Jersey ... and other areas of Northern New Jersey ... Texas weiner sauce is a not sweet...not hot... chili sauce that goes on hot dogs up this way. It has been around from the early 20th century and was developed in various Greek diners.
  14. I'll take that with relish ... and some mustard, minced onion and Texas weiner sauce.
  15. But maybe you can get a fire lizard out of it. (Ancient reference to a series of books by Anne McCaffrey - Dragon Song, Dragon Singer and Dragon Drums).
  16. Why I make my own breakfast sausage with lean ground pork, lots of sage, and some lean ground turkey.
  17. While waiting for the peach blueberry kuchen to finish baking some cold coconut pineapple fried rice and 2 of the sweet and sour meatballs with a little extra gravy. Reading eGullet and prepping the weekly shopping order. Warm kuchen out of the oven and a small piece with some vanilla yoghurt....just for quality control don't you know. Would be interesting with some ice cream.
  18. Now if you had dropped that dog into the fryer you would have a ripper...
  19. Sweet and sour turkey meatballs with coconut pineapple rice and olive oil roasted green beans.
  20. 3 open jars of various types of peanut butter so ..... my great grandmother's recipe for peanut butter cookies with my twist. Coarse chopped 72% chocolate. Peaches have just started to come in. Got some south Jersey peaches and some from the orchard where I shopped. Sliced up two whites and one regular peach, added a handful or two of blueberries then sprinkled with some toast dope and made John's grandmother's kuchen. There is a little juice left from the peaches and toast dope that I'm thinking I'll drizzle over the finished cake or mix with some confectioners sugar to drizzle. 21. BLT on toasted white bread...side of Greek yoghurt with some raspberries and blackberries that had some white balsamic vinegar and honey on them. @blue_dolphin where on the lake are you? Johnnybird leaves for North Hero Island next Thursday for a long weekend. Needless to say no great food like you are posting...it's a bunch of guys and the food consists of beer, steak, beer, hot dogs, beer, hamburgers, beer, beer and beer for dessert.
  22. you betca
  23. @blue_dolphin have you thought about mascarpone thinned with some of that hot honey on those roasted fruits? I love apricots that I (used to) poach in champagne then fill the hole where the stone was with mascarpone that I tinned with some flavored honey.... ohhhh.... what about ricotta salata that is mashed up with some mint and honey?
  24. Did you ever have a thought that something would taste good ... have the taste memory in your brain ... and then try to reproduce it? Well, I did that last night for dinner. Hebrew National dinner size hot dog, toasted bun, Texas weiner sauce and some mustard. Not good. Beginning of a heat wave today here so got up at about 4 to roast some chicken breasts that will go into a chef's salad and made some ratatouille that I'll eat at room temperature after drizzling it with some vinaigrette I make with sherry vinegar.
  25. hard scrambled eggs(don't hate me but soft scrambled is a texture problem for me), turkey sausage and a toasted bagel for me turkey sausage, French toast and blueberries for Johnnybird sent him off with blueberry lemon muffins, all kinds of breads to make pb & j sandwiches for hiking and a big thing of smooch to eat for whichever meal he wants while he is up in the mountains for a few days. as well as some hard boiled eggs.
