Growing up where I did cakes weren't a thig in my family...NOW pies!! That said we had coffee cakes around to have with our coffee before going out to do chores and before breakfast on weekends. For many years my sister insisted on a yellow layer cake with purple frosting for her birthday, a black walnut cake with black walnut frosting for my grandfather and strawberry shortcake made with Bisquick biscuits at home for my mom. We would always make a HUGE yellow cake-3 Duncan Hines boxes-in the blue marbled milk pan for her to take to school and share with her students. I really don't remember any cakes for my birthday except that any time Aunt Honey came for a family celebration we made dure there was an angel food cake for her. .

No clam chowder on the menu. Fish cakes with rhubarb compote, house coleslaw and partridgeberry cake with vanilla sauce. John also had scallops with a garlic oyster sauce glaze. Great recommendation!!

We were right across from you at Norris Point! You are so right...this is some of the most spectacular scenery I have ever seen. Right now we are in Twillingate and leaving for an early dinner at Sansone's lobster pool then a visit for John to Auk Island Winery.

Heading to Atlantic City - Ideas for Where to Eat?
suzilightning replied to a topic in New Jersey: Dining
OHH.. Can't wait to try 330 in Stone Harbor. Was wondering what happened to Marie Nicole's...we used to eat there and Black Duck on Sunset once a season. I can fit that in with pickinh up my apple por from Clinton Vonobet. Exit 0 Cookhouse and the Beach Plum bakery sound like some fun too. I missed the bakery that used to be next to West Emd Garage when they didn't re open twp seasons ago. Will have to try Mayer's Tavern. Wonfer if they want some recommemdations for talent...I know a dynamite guitar player from down there. -
Like @BeeZee I also grew up on...or should I say just off...of Long Island NY In another thread I told about cruising slowly around the back roads of the island looking to identify where the fruits were. Wineberries, blackberries ... Mom grew raspberries that she allowed to go wild on the acre of property we owned. Now at our home in NW NJ we have had both wineberries and blackcaps...with this cold March I don't think we will get any berries until mid August!! I prefer to use the wineberries to make a steamed pudding. Growing up we would come home with the spoils, mix up some Bisquick, fold in tje rinsed berries and then popped them into greased coffee cups. The cups went into a deep kettle with water half the way up the cups. An hour covered and steaming then de cup and add hard sauce...

So... We have been in Newfoundland for a week. Not many memorable meals as Johnnybird thpught it would be a good idea to have a dental extraction the Tuesday befote leabong on Friday. Needless to say he developed dry socket. We dod have a wonderful meal of salt fish cakes, turnips and carrots for John with soe 1892 malt beer. I had sauteed halibut with the same veg but ordered some tucca with partridgeberry jam to eat om the morning. Believe it or not it was at St. Chrostopher's Hotel restaurant. We stayed in a B &B in Norris Point and enjoyed talking with the owners mom and da who manage the place. Breakfast was blueberry waffles, fruit and yoghurt. We also talked quilting, canning and preserves Other places were OK. We are now in a cabin outside of Deer Lake and getting ready to head for Gander or Twillingate tomorrow. The only absolutes for this are we have to be in Bay Bulls on Friday at noon for a sea expedition and then back to St. christopher's on 3 July so we can take the ferty back to Nova Scotoa on our independence day Have seen icebergs...some good birds.. visited the Norse settlement near St Anthony's...met some wonderfuly funny and kind people amd seen some amazing sights....with a week and a half to go..........

Your Daily Sweets: What Are You Making and Baking? (2017 – )
suzilightning replied to a topic in Pastry & Baking
No real cooking here...I found a recipe in a magazine for a bar with nut butter, maple syrup, dried blueberries, pistachios and toasted oats. I did chop the pistachios for John as he is dealing with some dental issues. They are in the fridge for an hour or so then I will cut them up and individually package them for when we take off for vacation tomorrow. -
SOOOO......pickle slushies are now available. Anyone near a Sonic and want to take one for the team? I would but the nearest one for me is in Totowa...

True, "Skull Fucked by a Walrus" was inimitable. I just meant I would love to see those Conversations restarted and he would be a good one.

Remember back in the "old days" when eG would have Spotlight Conversations with various chefs? He would be a dynamite one I believe.

YES! Just posted in the other food book thread. Pick it up and read it soon...more memoir than cookbook.

What food-related books are you reading? (2016 -)
suzilightning replied to a topic in Food Media & Arts
I also read The Food Explorer and enjoyed it. Just finished Buttermilk Graffiti by Edward Lee. Wow....another must read. The subtitle is A Chef's Journey to Discover America's New Melting-Pot Cuisine … and he does. The Immortality of Paterson looks at the influx of Peruvian immigrants and their cuisine. I found it interesting because our waiter at a local restaurant we tried last week was Peruvian and his family had immigrated to Paterson. Exile and Cigars.....Miami, Cuban immigrants and Norman van Aken. Trawling for Shrimp....Vietnamese immigration into Texas. -
Edward Lee in his new book "Buttermilk Graffiti" has a chapter about this exact question that is very interesting....especially since he is married to a woman of German heritage and finds several similarities between German and Korean food. Hadn't thought of that but it is so logical......

Run...do not walk...to check out rick bragg's new book...The Best Cook in the World. It is part cookbook but mostly family stories...some perhaps a bit exaggerated...but the history of cooking passed down from generation to generation makes a phenomenal read! -
Linner? Dunch? After a meeting we went to a local restaurant that we had never tried before. It is called Stone Water after the local Lenape name for the lake it is on. So many things and I was soooooo hungry...…. John asked the server, Jordan, to bring my appetizer...…..sautéed shishito peppers with a lemon aioli. Also ordered a serving of truffle parmesan fries that were so crispy on the outside and fluffy inside. John ordered a salmon ceviche and an order of shrimp with tomato and garlic with toasted ciabatta. Skip the toasting on the bread for John. He also ordered some sort of a session beer...……. We will be back

Just baked some chicken breasts to make chicken salad with for John on his weekend trip to Poughkeepsie. Also baked a small piece of salmon I had marinated with some rice wine vinegar, sesame oil , garlic and tamari. I made some gluten free short pasta and will mix it with the flaked salmon, scallion and a sauce with some Marzetti Simply dressed lemon vinaigrette mixed with some mayonnaise.
