3 sandwiches on mini rye bread - mini rye, cranberry relish, Miracle Whip and some thinly shaved turkey breast. Could also be put under "Snacking while eGulleting…."

    Dinner 2019

I can't find a link to a free recipe. It was from Dora Charles' cookbook though I subbed out toast dope for the spices and sugar in the sweet potatoes.

    Dinner 2019

Well dinner last night didn't happen as I planned. My sister-in-law came down for a brief overnight visit. John was having some digestive problems as, it turns out, was Julie. I had roasted a turkey breast that came out of the freezer, made their mom's sausage dressing, was trying out a not too sweet roasted sweet potato casserole(keeper) and green beans. Julie had crackers and some cheddar and blue cheese. John had an open face turkey breast and gravy sandwich on his bread with some plain roasted sweet potato. Well, leftovers.....
  4. Yeah...…. curling snacks! I love to watch curling....and there is an ice rink near here that has curling.
  5. so appropriate!!!! love to y'all up there
  6. I like to salt and let sit for 24 hours; take tarragon and tie some stalks around the roast then 225F for about 2 hours and it is medium rare in my oven. I am happy
  7. As a librarian I envy you your seed libraries. As a black thumb grower (Who do you know who can kill English ivy?) IOur local Shoprite has been offering some "mini" things -I bought a mini garden of cat grass for Smudge and Sinder and a garden of mini tomatoes. We shall see <SIGH>
  8. Hey, now.... one of the kindest and wisest men in the world had 10 rings.... Yogi Berra I am such a sports dork
  9. I no longer drink alcohol but I remember an interview with Elmer T. Lee from Buffalo Trace who said any bourbon he chose to drink he put into a glass with ice and brought the ABV down to around 85% so it was sippable.
  10. No honeysuckle around it? At her grandparent's farm that was what was planted around the privy and my mom hated the smell of honeysuckle for the rest of her life for that reason.
  11. better than the can of cat food when I was baby sitting..... a human, not the cat.
  12. As another NJ person (Morris County ) we have Texas Weiners - the chili sauce on a dog on a bun BUT living in Hooks TX it HAS to be a small bag of Frito's on the side, cut open, ladled in chili, onions, cheese and hot sauce.
  13. Way outside the lines but growing up off the East End of Long Island we also made wilted lettuce salads. Does anyone else have experience with what we called poor man's stew? Tried out salt pork, fresh small potatoes, last of the rutabagas, carrots, onions and green beans. Where I live now we are just out of the picture though Sussex County - less than a mile away - is in. All the Kittatinny mountains down into PA.... You can get Lebanon bologna as well as Taylor Pork roll around here.
  14. Wow....I never knew there was so much to reviving these seeds. I'm really interested in those "Baby Pequin" seeds....they look interesting.
  15. getting cold here as the front moves through with snow flurries. decided to repurpose some stuff so some leftover roasted chicken breast, glutenfree rice pasta, 1/2 cup of French onion soup, a quart of chicken stock then some minced carrots and a bay leaf for the finish. Lunch 2019

more of a long ago forgotten snack than lunch.... cooked some basmati and jasmine rice to make shrimp fried rice for John's dinner IF he makes it home. popped upstairs with fresh laundry as it was finished then, before I put it into the fridge to cool, scooped up about a quarter cup, topped it with about a teaspoon of butter and the same amount of toast dope and ate it. many, many years ago growing up our "dinner" was a cup of rice with butter and sugar as we had had our main meal about 1 pm.
  18. Interesting. I was watching a Food Network show the other day and Aarti Sequeria mentioned that growing up in India gas was a valuable resource so pressure cooers were widely used. I hadn't connected that until then. always been afraid of them and gas ovens.
  19. going in my notebook.....thanks for the heads up on this.
  20. Well, at least you get some exercise with all that jumping. I bought John one of those for a holiday present a few years ago when we were on a cruise. He really liked the run soaked cake since he eats all of his food with a spoon.....
  21. Smash Burger is just down the road from the Five Guys and is next on the list.
  22. Sorry... it was Five Guys Soooooo……. decided to try something different especially after reading this thread. Ordered a small fries...way too much for me but some of the best fries I have had in a long while. Not soggy!!! Hot and crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Malt vinegar, mayo or ketchup or all. I would go back to share these with someone else. Got a small bacon cheese burger with pickles, ketchup and sautéed onions. Took the bottom of the cotton wool bun off and disposed of it. Threw out about half the burger and the gentleman who took my order seemed upset. I said to him that I had never eaten there, the fries were incredible though I couldn't eat them all but I didn't enjoy the taste of the burger.
  23. I just devoured Ann Hood's book Kitchen Yarns in a little less than two days. I did not want to put it down. Her writing is lyrical and poignant. Now I have a new list of things I need to read!

    Clam chowder

I grew up with three styles: New England - milk or cream Manhattan - tomato based Rhode Island - Chris's I still have my great grandmother's recipe for all of them in the recipe book she gifted to my grandmother for Christmas in 1938 after she, my grandfather(her son) and their children and my grandmother's sister had moved back to Shelter Island, NY. I have eaten so much clam chowder IF I ever eat anymore it will be too soon. Sorry for being snarky. I can post the recipes if I haven't already …...my mom used to win awards with the Manhattan and that is what we always had for the night before Thanksgiving instead of pizza
