Pet shop.....my problem is that I can't see myself walking out with a geinea pig and break its neck then grill it. Have friend who did that for fresh octopus in LA and brought that to K Town. I just hope the ASPCA won't be knocking on my door anytime soon for this posting.

I have tried fried gator in Florida, snake soup in Taipei, seal in Alaska. I am ready for cuy (guinea pig). Where can I find that in NYC. I asked couple of restaurants in Queens but no luck. AzianBrewer

Pictorial: Imperial Shrimp (Garlic/Tomato Sauce)
AzianBrewer replied to a topic in China: Cooking & Baking
Ma used to prepare this dish using unpeeled larger shrimps. She also kept the heads. I made this dish several times using crayfish/crawfish/crawdad' (if yaw from the South). -
How about Thai style with very finely minced lemongrass, Thai basil, chopped Thai chilli pepper, lime juice, sugar and several dashes of that Thai fish sauce? I know the Malaysian also eat something alike (raw fish salad) except that they use chopped pickled ginger and root vegetables in various colors, mixed greens and crunchy Chinese-American style chow mein noodle.

The pizza joint might not stand the pounding of Wilma but the condo survived Emily. I emailed the condo manager but have see any reply yet. I got to the airport on Thursday morning before they shut the airport at 2 pm. I am in Chicago by 5 pm and arrived in NYC at 9 pm.

Thanks for the cheese info. The pizza joint is several steps from our rental condo so we decided to try it out just for the heck of the it. At first, we (the Mrs. and I) were quite skeptical with the slices. The square shape slices look very much like the Silician or Ellio's except they are Neapolitan thin (crispy with a nice springiness). The first one we ordered was the gorgonzola slice-Awesome!!!! The second slice was the "shroom"...Fughetaboutit!!! And we finished off with stuffed pizza of ham and cheese...Fughetaboutit 2!!! By the way, were pretty hardcore with the pizza since I am originally from Brooklyn and the wife is from Queens. Forget about Chicago's deep dish, California Pizza Kitchen or Wolfgang Pucks you see in the airport coz...True pizza is to be eaten with hand and not utensils! I forgot the name of that joint but we definitely vouch that place! Yes, we also tried many street foods such as taco al pastor, gorditas, tamales and etc. My friends and I actually joked about driving up to Merida for iguanas and armadillos. AzianBrewer

Pigs in real blankets!

Don't have the recipes but this is what I had from street vendor in Playa del Carmen. Al Pastor and Mexican hot dog (wrapped with bacon)

The pizzas in Playa del Carmen are great! It is just as good as NYC pizza. I am wondering what kind of cheese are used? It does not taste like the "muz" (mozzorella) from back home. Is it queso blanco? Square slice with Gonganzola Square slice with "shroom" The thin version of stuffed pizza (jamon con queso).

Thanks! I want to try that. What other ingredients/sauces are used in cooking crab with beer? ← I like to keep it simple...ginger and scallion with a bit of garlic. But let the beer reduce a bit before throwing in the ginger and scallion.

Fish and Shrimp Tacos at La Loncheria. 12 pesos for Shrimp 10 pesos for Fish
-
Another place for reasonable grubs on La Quinta is La Parilla. No too bad for the price but certainly not the best.
-
I want to bring some back from Playa del Carmen a week ago but afraid that might not clear customs.
-
Try cooking crabs with beer! The taste is superb.
-
Oasis is a tourist trap. Try La Loncheria on 24th and 5th, their shrimp and fish tacos are slamming!
-
It was actually pretty good. No complaint except for the price.

← Jason: It is very surprising to even see tofu-yo or fu-yu (Chinese) served in a restaurant. Tofu-yo always goes with white porridge or congee in a Chinese breakfast. These are the most peasant food you can get in China or other part of Southeast Asia. There are usually 10-12 cubes (1 inch cube) in a $1.95. Dude, that's .1625 to .195 cents per cube. We are talking about some serious markup if you do the math. Would you pay $5 for one green olive $4 for one pickled button white mushroom? Hell no, that 1 cube of tofu yo wasn't served in a cheese tray but a in coaster with a toothpick!
-
I went to an Okinawan restaurant in NYC last night with a friend. We ordered a dish of Tofu-Yo out of curiousity. When the waitress came out with it, we were totally amazed that the restaurant charged us $8 (USD) for a cube!!!! I saw that in an Asian market selling in a jar for $3. The taste is very sharp and quite firm comparing to the Chinese/Taiwanese variations.

Joe Shanghai is good but don't you think it's a bit overrated??? Just my opinion.

Hey folks- Anyone here know any good places for fugu-blowfish? The last time I had this was in Japan and it's $$$$! The fish is carefully sliced to wafer thin then plated on an exquisite platter to resemble the petals of a chrysanthemum, the flower of death in Japan. I think it is the best sashimi I ever had right up there with otoro.
